Corresponding Editor, Latin America

Paid, 21 hours per week

Friends Publishing Corporation is an independent, nonprofit, Quaker organization. Our mission is to communicate Quaker experience in order to connect and deepen spiritual lives. We publish the magazine Friends Journal, the video project QuakerSpeak, and online properties including friendsjournal.org, quakerspeak.com, and quaker.org. We’re seeking a friendly, responsible colleague to join our team. Depending on the location and needs of the successful applicant, this position may be a direct hire, a contractor, or employed by a third-party employer in the applicant’s own country.

Purpose of Job 

The corresponding editor role supports Friends Publishing’s global content initiatives, sourcing, writing, editing, and promoting content from their assigned territory.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in a professional setting, or equivalent. Experience with a global or multilingual business, nonprofit, or educational institution is a plus.
  • Familiarity with and affinity for Quakers and Quaker institutions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience in an editorial capacity in a newsroom, media organization, business, or similar setting.
  • Ability to work independently and track multiple projects. Coursework or training in project management is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills in Spanish. 
  • Good spoken and written English communication skills.
  • Familiarity with office software (Google G Suite word processing and spreadsheets).
  • Familiarity with the Submittable and Salesforce platforms is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Write news and feature articles as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain a roster of trusted freelance contributors from among Spanish-speaking Quaker communities, primarily in Latin America.
  • Assign, evaluate, and edit Spanish-language articles and content for Friends Publishing’s outlets, including Friends Journal and Quaker.org.
  • Source and occasionally take photographs and videos of Quakers and Quaker gatherings.
  • Assist with evaluation and cleanup of English-Spanish translation projects.
  • Interface with Friends Publishing’s US-based editorial staff.
  • Develop, track, and report on the progress of multiple projects, ensuring progress and transparency.
  • Create and maintain proper records of content creators and manuscripts/articles.
  • Participates in regular staff meetings, retreats, and training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • This is a remote position. Depending on the location of the successful applicant, there may be opportunities to co-work in a location with partner organizations.
  • Travel to Quaker gatherings in the region may be possible.
  • Working hours are flexible, though we expect our colleagues to be available for consultation during a portion of our home-office work day, which is 9-5 Eastern US time.

Book Review Editor (Volunteer, Remote)

Friends Journal is seeking a Book Review Editor. This is an unpaid volunteer position, with an expectation of 15-18 hours/month. The candidate will work remotely, and the start date is flexible, ideally sometime in September or October. There is no deadline to apply; we will be accepting applications until the position is filled.

Qualifications include: someone who loves reading and books, particularly ones of interest to Friends; enjoys working closely with others (FJ’s volunteer reviewers); is familiar with Friends Journal and its audience; has proven editing, writing, and research skills, in addition to project management and organization skills; is interested in following publishing industry news.

Duties of the Book Review Editor:

  • Works with Friends Journal editorial staff to request, log, and ultimately select books for review, including consideration of unsolicited titles.
  • Responsible for appropriately matching each selected title with one of Friends Journal’s available reviewers who have a range of knowledge and expertise.
  • Using email and/or phone, corresponds with each reviewer in a timely manner to coordinate mailing physical copies of books (mailed from the FJ office), setting attainable review deadlines to meet column requirements, and tracking reviews to completion.   • Serves as the first-round copyeditor for each book review, being mindful of content, tone, and length (about 400 to 800 words), prior to passing along to the staff editor, who will complete another round of fact-checking and editing before publication. See published book reviews here.
  • Adheres to an almost monthly deadline (skip three months) to send a set of completed book reviews (one column generally features about 5 to 8 titles) to editorial staff. One issue per year (usually November) features an expanded Books column with twice the amount of material.
  • Optional: Occasionally writes full and “In Brief” reviews (once or twice a year) for the column.
