Charles W. Ufford Jr.

Ufford—Charles W. Ufford Jr., 87, on August 17, 2018, at Kendal at Hanover, N.H. Charlie was born on July 8, 1931, in Princeton, N.J. He graduated from Deerfield Academy and from Harvard in 1953. A leading squash player in the New York area, he was twice Intercollegiate Squash Champion while a Harvard undergraduate, captain of the tennis team and the soccer team, and an all-American soccer player. He held the Lionel de Jersey Harvard Scholarship at Emmanuel College of the University of Cambridge, where he made long-lasting friends from all over the British Commonwealth. Although a birthright Quaker, he relinquished his conscientious objector status to enlist in the U.S. Army for two years and was stationed at Fort Jackson, S.C. He earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1959 and married Letitia Wheeler, also of Princeton, in 1961, and they lived in Brooklyn Heights in New York City. He belonged to the Harvard Club and the Racquet Club and was a director of the International Lawn Tennis Club.

Returning to Princeton in 1965, he served as clerk of Princeton Meeting and later on the boards of Friends Fiduciary Corporation and the Executive Committee of Friends Committee on National Legislation. He chaired the New York State Bar Association Trusts and Estates Law Section in 1984 and was former head of the Trusts and Estates Department of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel; and a former partner at the firm of Jackson & Nash.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Letitia Wheeler Ufford; his children, Eleanor Leger, Catherine Ufford-Chase, and Alison Salem; eight grandchildren; and a sister, Beatrice Zenzie. Friends can contribute in his memory to Friends Committee on National Legislation, 245 2nd St., Washington, D.C. 20002.
