Diane P. Butler

Butler—Diane P. Butler, 63, on August 2, 2017, at home in Ithaca, N.Y. Diane was born on June 4, 1954, in New York City. She was a member of Columbia (S.C.) Meeting and blessed it in many ways: as one of the primary energizing forces creating Alternatives to Violence Project South Carolina (AVPSC); as representative to Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting and Association (SAYMA), Friends General Conference (FGC), and other Quaker organizations; and by providing the impetus for Columbia Meeting to complete its beautiful labyrinth. She guided the meeting to a deeper understanding of white privilege and its effects on the lives of those who are not part of that community. Her work on behalf of racial justice was known throughout SAYMA and FGC. She also served on the ministerial staff of Temple Zion Baptist Church in Columbia.

She easily made connections with people of all backgrounds. Her generosity and discernment drew out thoughts and feelings from those she encountered. Before she left Columbia, she joyfully gave the meeting all of her house plants to care for, and their beauty and vitality represent her caring nature. She inspired Columbia Meeting with her faith, love, and good energy as she transitioned out of this life. Always fully engaged and mindful, she leaves a legacy of rich memories and inspiration for all who knew her.

Diane is survived by one child, Andrew Stokes; two sisters; and one brother.
