Elizabeth Jackson Leighton Lamborn

Lamborn—Elizabeth Jackson Leighton Lamborn, 81, on May 27, 2019, at home in Cumru Township, Berks County, Pa. Betty was born May 21, 1938, in Coatesville, Pa., to Isabel Jackson and William H. Leighton Sr. Through her grandmother Bertha Jackson Martin, she traced her Quaker ancestry back ten generations to Anthony Jackson, who emigrated from England to Ireland in 1649. He established, along with William Edmundson and others, the first Friends meeting in Ireland in 1654, only six years after George Fox first made his appearance as a preacher. She graduated from the former (three-year) Christiana High School in 1955; from Scott High School in 1956; from Millersville University (then Millersville State College) in 1960, with a bachelor’s in library science and mathematics; and from Reading Area Community College in 1982, with an associate’s degree in computer science. While in college she did a one-month tour of European libraries followed by a one-month visit with her father’s relatives in England.

She was a member of Reading (Pa.) Meeting, serving as librarian, hospitality clerk, auditor, and lending quiet support: thinking to do the forgotten or overlooked tasks without drawing attention to herself.

Her husband, Taylor Lamborn, loved her spectacular blue eyes and smile. She and Taylor celebrated 55 years of marriage on July 6, 2018. A computer programmer and analyst, she belonged to both the Christiana and Bart Historical Societies and was an avid reader. She enjoyed music, especially classical and big-band; crocheting; knitting; being a 4-H club leader; going to the beach; swimming; traveling (she saw 49 states and several Canadian provinces); and collecting recipes and experimenting with them to make delicious food that often came from her garden.

Betty was preceded in death by a brother, William H. Leighton Jr. She is survived by her husband, Taylor Lamborn; two children, Janet I. Lamborn and James T. Lamborn; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. After a memorial meeting at Reading Meeting on June 22, 2019, at which Janet said that Betty was the wind beneath her wings, Betty was buried in Drumore (Pa.) Meeting Cemetery.
