Martha naci\u00f3 el 5 de junio de 1947 en Richmond, Virginia, la hija mayor de Barbara Lasley y Conrad Norwood Carter. Se gradu\u00f3 de South Mecklenburg High School (Charlotte, N.C.) en 1965 y de Guilford College en 1969. Durante sus a\u00f1os en Guilford, trabaj\u00f3 con el grupo de j\u00f3venes en New Garden Meeting en Greensboro, N.C. Tambi\u00e9n en 1969, se cas\u00f3 con Clarence Vance Mattocks.
