Frank Rouse Huff Jr.

Huff—Frank Rouse Huff Jr., 68, on March 4, 2018, after losing his struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Bo, as he was known, was born on December 29, 1949, in Orangeburg, S.C., the eldest of three children of Margaret Joan Farris and Frank Rouse Huff Sr. He grew up in St. Matthews, S.C. A college friend introduced him to Quakers, and he first attended meeting in Atlanta, Ga.

During the Vietnam War he took part in antiwar activities with Friends. He became a nonviolence trainer, preparing people for antiwar protests and marches. An avid reader, he became proficient in Quaker history. Through Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting and Association (SAYMA) he got to know Quaker historian Larry Ingle. He and his wife, Beth G. Stafford, attended meetings in Columbia, S.C., and Nashville, Tenn.

They moved to Kentucky in 1986 for his work at University of Kentucky, joining Lexington (Ky.) Meeting and Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting. He and Beth adopted three children. He went on to work for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Finally, he worked at the Ombudsman’s Office of the Department of Community Based Services (DCBS), from which he retired. He was a devoted husband, married to Beth for 38 years. Lexington Friends remember him with affection, gratitude, and respect for his service as a mediator of conflicts in the meeting and for his knowledge of Quaker history.

Bo was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Farris Huff. He is survived by his wife, Beth G. Stafford; three children, Samantha E. Lightfoot, Breanna M. Huff, and Shawn A. Huff; five grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Anne Huff Weathers.
