Earlier this week, U.S. immigration officers detailed a recent Guilford College student and attender at Spring Friends Meeting in North Carolina. The American Friends Service Committee has put together a background flyer on the case:
Kevin Muhanji Afanda (“Muhanji”) was arrested early in the morning of July 18 and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), because of issues with his student visa. Muhanji, who is from Kenya, is a smart, kind, compassionate and funny young man; he is a valued member of the Guilford College, Greensboro, and Quaker communities. He was a Physics major at Guilford. He attends Spring Friends Meeting in Snow Camp and has volunteered at New Garden Meeting, Quaker Lake, and worked with staff of the American Friends Service Committee.
As of 7/20, we get this update:
An immigration attorney in Greensboro is working on the case and going before the judge to work out voluntary departure (as opposed to deportation) This will make getting a visa to return to the US easier than a deportation. Concerned Friends are asked to call our senators to raise awareness about this case and the overarching immigration issues in this country. Spring Friends Meeting has also set up a fund to help cover expected Kevin’s legal costs.
