[2001 Editors note. Despite the title, this list appears to be for Gwynedd, Pennsylvania preparative meeting and leaves out records for Plymouth, Providence, Norristown, Exeter and Richland preparative meetings which were all part of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting in days past. Gwynedd Monthly Meeting was from 1699 until 1737, the Quaker MM for the northwestern Pennsylvania frontier. After 1737 Exeter (Oley) Monthly Meeting was formed and the Walking Purchase was made, extending the frontier beyond Gwynedd.

Note also that the editor has slightly changed the format to conserve space. The list which was generally chronological has been alphabetized by the groom. Equivalent names like John, Johns and Jones or David, Davids, Davies, Davis are counted as the same name in the alphabetization. The abbreviation mh or m.h. stands for meeting-house. S/o= son of, d/o = daughter of; Montgomery is the township, not the county.

Finally note that the editor is adding names to this list after making trips to the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College - these are marked JQ.] Quaker wedding certificates at Gwynedd in this period often used a set four column pattern. The right most column under where the bride and groom sign was used typically by male relatives with the two fathers signing first. The third column would be for female relatives, with the mothers signing first. The top of the left most column would be signed by the overseers of the wedding, who are often well known Quaker ministers. Because these patterns are valuable in determining relationships, the editor is adding them to this page as he finds them.

Abstracts of the marriage records of Haverford Monthly Meeting (to which Gwynedd Friends, until 1714, belonged), and of those of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, are amongst the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia [note today Swarthmore College is generally where Gwynedd records are kept --ed. 2001]. From these I have copied a list, relating to Gwynedd and Montgomery, which follows below. In presenting it, however, I desire to say that while it has been copied with care, and is probably accurate, it is at best but the copy of a copy of the original records, and that these have themselves become, by the passage of time, difficult to decipher, in many instances. Those who may wish to be absolutely certain as to dates, etc., should of course consult the original; otherwise, for ordinary purposes, the list here given will doubtless serve.

The following lists are made up from memoranda found in two almanac memorandum books that were amongst the papers of Cadwallader Foulke (surveyor), of Gwynedd. The larger of the two is Aitken's General Register and Calednar, for the Year 1774, printed at Philadelphia by R. Aitken; the other is The Lancaster Pocket Almanack, for the Year 1778, by Anthony Sharp, Philom., printed at Lancaster by Francis Bailey. The two contain blank leaves on which the memoranda appear. Both of them no doubt were originally the property of Samuel Foulke, of Richalnd (son of Hugh and Ann), and the memoranda, begun by him, were added to by his son Cadwalader. Most of the marriages and a large part of the deaths are those of persons living at Richland, but as it would be difficult to select strictly those belonging to Gwynedd, and as there were so many ties of kindred and acquaintance with the Richland people, I have thought it altogether proper to give all that are found in both books. 1829, August [24], died Milcah Martha Moore, at Burlington NJ, widow of Dr. Charles Moore, of Montgomery Square, aged upwards of 90 years.

[Note: Milcah Martha Moore was the daughter of Dr. Richard Hill, a famous physician, first of Maryland, afterward of Madeira, and finally of Philadelphia where he died 1762. She was born in Madeira, the youngest of twelve children, Sept. 29, 1740 and m. in 1767, Dr. Charles Moore, the son of Richard Moore (and uncle of Henry Moore, farmer and blacksmith in Montgomery, where C.S. Knapp lives, 1884). Dr. Charles was a distinguished physician. He had graduated at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) in 1752, and located to practice in his profession at Montgomery Square, where he died Aug. 19, 1801, in his 78th year. He was buried at Gwynedd. After his death his widow removed to Burlington, NJ and died there without issue, as stated above, Aug. 24, 1829, her age being a little under 89 (not over 90). She left a bequest for educational purposes to Gwynedd meeting, and was a woman long remembered in the neighborhood. A grand-niece, the daughter of her husband's nephew, Henry was named after her and married Solomon Fussell, of Chester county.]
