Gwynedd MM minutes, October 1752-March 1753

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 25th of the 7th mo 1752

...Thomas Evans reports that he accordingly did and the said Moses being present at this Meeting, gave Friends no Satisfaction at all, also Friends from Providence Report to this Meeting that the said Moses Coates has at divers times uttered very hard reflecting and unchristian Expressions against certain particular Friends Members of this Meeting. John Jacobs and David Thomas are appointed to treat with him the said Moses on the Occasion and Labour with him to bring him to a true Sense of his Conduct and that he appear at our next Meeting.

8th A Certificate for Mary Pugh to Richland Mo. Meeting was read, approved and Signed.

9th James Stroud produced a paper to this Meeting Acknowledging his outgoings in Marriage and desiring to be continued under the Care of Friends. Also Christian Smith Acknowleding herself guilty of Fornication with him that is now her Husband and her Sorrow for the same, desiring to be continued under Friends Care as she may deserve it, which is received and John Williams is desired to read it at the Close of a first day Meeting.

10th The Overseers of Gwynedd Meeting report that Evan Roberts has gone out in Marriage and further that he Committed Fornication with her that is now his wife, and has been much addicted to Idleness and Intermperance. John Jones, William Foulke are Desired to treat with him on the Ocassion and endeavour to make him sensible of his outgoings, and give Satisfaction therefore.

11th The Overseers of the Respective Meetings being Called, Report that Love and Unity is maintained, Meetings kept up, and Edneavours used to put the Discipline into Practice. John Jones, Robert Jones, Thomas Foulke, John Williams, Joseph Jones and Abraham Dawes are appointed to attend the service of the next Quarterly Meeting at Philadelphia and to report as aforesaid.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 25th of the 8th mo 1752

1st Francis Hobson read the paper of Acknowledgment given in by George Evans at New Providence as also did the Friend that of Christian Smith and his(?) against Isaac Nanna and John Norman.

2nd The Friends appointed to treat with Moses Coats report that he seems more plyable and willing to make Friends satisfaction - said Friends are Continued to urge him to it

3rd John Thomas and Mary Roberts declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. John Jones and Joseph Ambler are appointed to inquire of his Conversation and clearness and report as they find at our next Meeting.

4th James Espin and Mary Crusey declarerd their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. He is desired to produce to our next Monthly Meeting a Certificate of his Conversation and clearness from the Monthly Meeting he belongs to in order to make way for their further proceeding.

5th Owen Roberts being present in this Meeting confesses his being sorry for his giving Friends any trouble in that Rum was used at his Vendue, and this Meeting accepts of it, and on application for a certificate for said Owen and his wife to Buckingham Monthly Meeting, Rees Harry and Amos Griffith are desired to make the necessary inquiry and draw one accordingly.

6th A Certificate for Susannah Richardson to Abington Monthly Meeting was read allowed and signed.

7th The Friends appointed to treat with Evan Roberts report that they both have not had an Opportunity with him, they are therefore continued on that Occasion, desiring they may do it before our next Meeting.

8th An Endorsement on our Certificate for John Hank and Wife from Richland dated the 20th Instant was read in this Meeting and altho we think it hardly fair, yet it is received And the Overseers desired to do their Duty to said Hank.

9th The Overseers of Gwynedd acquaint this Meeting of Gaynor Bartholmew's going out in Marriage and declining to give Friends Satisfaction altho often treated with on the Occasion. Therefore we disown and deny said Gaynor to be in Membership with us or have any Right among us, until she acknowledges her Transgression to the Satisfaction of this Meeting.

10th Application being made for a Certificate for William Davies to proceed in Marriage with a Young Woman belonging to Abington Monthly Meeting, Joseph Jones and Abraham Dawes are appointed to make the necessary inquiry and draw one accordlingly.

11th A complaint being exhibeted by our Overseers to this Meeting on account of difference between Jeptha Lewis and Rees Harry about a Ditch and Fence, which is referred to the next Monthly Meeting.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 26th of the 9th mo 1752

1st Mary Roberts Certificate from Abington dated the 26th(?) Instant being produced to this Meeting giving a good account of her which is well received.

2nd John Thomas and Mary Roberts declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the second time and nothing appearing to Obstruct their proceeding they are therefore left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions, John Jones and Joseph Ambler are appointed to see its Orderly accomplished.

3rd James Espin and Mary Crusey Declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the Second time, nothing appearing to impede their proceeding, he having produced to this Meeting a Certificate of his Conversation and Clearness from Abington Monthly Meeting, are therefore left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions John Jones and Samuel Davies are appointed to see in Oderly accomplished.

4th Samuel Thomas and Margaret Roberts declare their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first Time, John Jones and John Williams are appointed to inspect his Conversation and clearness and report thereof to our next Monthly Meeting

5th Aaron Coats and Rachel Eastburn declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. John Jacobs and Robert Jones are appointed to see it Orderly Accomplished to make the necessary Inquiry of his Conversation and Clearness and Report thereof to our next Monthly Meeting.

6th Moses Coates being present in this Meeting signifies he has withdrawn the Action against Thomas Lewis and paid the cost but refuses to give any satisfaction for commencing it and rather Justifies his former expressions against Friends. We desire him to Consider well thereof before our next Monthly Meeting and appoint John Jacobs and David Thomas to encourage him.

7th One of the Friends appointed to visit Evan Roberts Report that he desires a little longer time, which is granted and William Foulke and Thomas Evans to acquaint him...

8th John Jones Plymouth, Thomas Evans Innholder, Abraham Luken, Edward Edwards, John Bell and Ellis Roberts are appointed to examine into the nature of Jeptha Lewis's complaint against Rees Harry with regard to a Dithch dug by said Harry on his own Land as he ? imagines supposed by said Jeptha Lewis to collect Water to his disadvantage and also Rees's right to move a Fence that was formerly a Partition between them, and to used their utmost endeavors to accomodate the Difference and report thereof the our next Monthly Meeting.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 31st of the 10th mo 1752

1st The Friends appointed to attend the Marriages of the two Couples left to their Liberty by our last Monthly Meeting, report that they were both orderly accomplished.

2nd Samuel Thomas and Margaret Roberts declared their intentions of Marriage with each other the first [sic] time, and nothing appearing to hinder their proceeding, they are left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions. John Jones and John Williams are appointed to see it orderly accomplished.

3rd Aaron Coats and Rachel Eastburn declared their inntentions of Marriage with each other the second time and nothing appearing to Obstruct their proceeding they are left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions. Ellis Roberts and Joseph Jones are appointed to see it Orderly Accomplished.

4th Thomas Rees and Hesther Trotter declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. He is desired to produce a Certificate of his Conversation and Clearness from the Monthly Meeting he belongs to, to our next Monthly Meeting in order to make way for their further proceeding.

5th Moses Coats being present in this Meeting and seeems in a more agreeable disposition, then heretofore, which encourages this Meeting to wait one Month longer by him, hoping that he will then be in a more suitable Disposition to give satisfaction.

6th The Friends appointed to treat with Evan Roberts report that they found no Encouragement to wait longer by him therefore this Meeting appoints Daniel Williams and Edward Foulke to draw a Testification against him by our next Monthly Meeting.

7th The Friends appointed to Examine into the reason of Jeptha Lewis's Complaint against Rees Harry touching a Ditch and Fence, Report that they all Met and heard the parties, and it is their Opinion that they said Jeptha has but little reason of Complaint against said Rees, but the Friends are desired to deliver their report in Writing to our next Monthly Meeting.

8th Mary Williams sent into this Meeting a Paper Acknowledging being guilty of Fornication and freely Condemning the Same with desires to be continued under Friends Care and notice as her future Conduct may recommend her, said paper is Ordered to be read at the Close of a first day Meeting at Gwynedd before our next Monthly Meeting by T. Evans

9th Thomas Foulke, Joseph Ambler, William Foulke, John Morris, Samuel Davies and John Bell are appointed to attend the service of the next Quarterly meeting at Richland and to report that Love and Unity subsists in the general amongst Us, Meetings kept up, and Endeavours used to put the Discipline in practice.

10th Application being made for a Certificate for Joseph Jacobs to go on a Trading Voyage to Europe, Francis Hobson and Moses Coates Junior are appointed to inquire of his Conversation and Clearness and write accordingly.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 28th of the 11th mo 1752.

1st The Friends appointed to Attend the Marriages of the two Couples left to their Liberty by our last Meeting report that they were both accomplished Orderly.

2nd Thomas Rees and Esther Trotter declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other for the second time and nothing appearing to obstruct their proceeding they are left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions, he having produced a Certificate of Clearness from the Monthly Meeting to which he belongs, Joseph Jones and Samuel Davies are appointed to see it orderly accompished.

3rd Joseph Dyer and Joanna Cagan declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. He is expected to produce to our next Mo. Meeting a Certificate of his clearness from the Mo. Meeting he belongs to, to make way for their further proceeding.

4th Edward Stroud Jr. gave into this Meeting a paper Condemning his outgoing in Marriage and desiring to be continued under the Care of Friends, said paper is Reserved on Tryal of his future Conduct.

5th Moses Coats appeared in ths Meeting in an agreeable Disposition, and acknowledged that he had in some Heat of Temper Uttered some unsavory Expressions for which he Confessed he was sorry, and hoped he was for the future to behave himself better and signifies that the Affair between him and Thomas Lewis is intirely settled to satisfaction.

6th Granted in this Meeting a Certificate for Hannah Atkinson to Wrights Town Monthly Meeting and also one for Elizabeth Dilworth to Abington Mo. Meeting -- Likewise one for Joseph Jacobs to go on a Trading Voyage to Ireland elsewhere.

7th Providence Overseers acquaint this Meeting that George Brooks and wife Desires to come under the Care and Nurture of their Meeting which is granted and they are received into Fellowship.

8th The Friends appointed to draw a paper of Testifiaction against Evan Roberts have done accordingly. William Foulke is desired to read said paper to him and see if he has nay thing material to object against the publication thereof as Usual.

9th The Friends appointed in the Affair of Jeptha Lewis and Rees Harry have not drawn their Judgement in Writing they are desired to do it by next Meeting.

10th The Friend appointed to Read the paper Given by Margaret Williams has not performed that service, but is Continued.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 26th of the 12th mo. 1752.

1st The Friends appointed to attend the Marriage of Thomas Rees and Esther Trotter report that it was orderly accomplished.

2nd Joseph Dyer and Joannah Cagan declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the second time, he produced a Certificate from the Meeting he belongs to, Certifying his Clearness and They are therefore left to their Liberty to Consumate the same, Moses Coates and Abraham Scott are appointed to see it Orderly Accomplished.

3rd Rees Harry and Ellin Roberts declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the first time. John Jones and Thomas Foulke are appointed to see it orderly accomplished, inspect into his clearness, and also to inspect her Affairs relating to the Estate of her Minor Children, and Report as they find to our next Meeting.

4th The Friend appointed to read to Evan Roberts the paper drawn against him gave this Meeting to understand that he has nothing material to object against the publication thereof. John Williams is desried to read said paper at the Close of first day Meeting before our next Monthly Meeting. Also the Friend appointed to read Mary Williams' paper at the close of first day meeting, has accordingly done it.

5th Ann Wilson produced a Certificate from Buckingham Mo. Meeting giving an Account of her orderly life and Conversation which was read and received.

6th John Jacobs and Francis Hobson are appointed to make Inquiry and draw a Certificate by next Monthly Meeting for John Wells and Family to Exeter Monthly Meeting and another for James Packer to Bradford Mo. Meeting.

7th The Friends appointed to hear the Difference now depending between Rees Harry and Jeptha Lewis made a different report to this Meeting Touching the Cause of Complaint the Parites being Present at this Meeting at length consented to meet before our next and Chose Refferees to Award and settle the matter in Dispute between them before our next Mo. Meeting.

8th The Overseers of Gwynedd Report to this Meeting that Griffith Hughs has been sometime since guilty of Drinking to Excess and that Condition Came in a Meeting of Worship at Gwynedd, Job Pugh and Ellis Roberts are desired to Treat with him on the Occasion and Report as they find him to our next Meeting.

9th Some Friends from Towamencin proposed on Behalf of that Neighbourhood for a first day Meeting amongst them during the Winter Season, this Meeting Consents that a Meeting be held at the Houses of Abram Lukens, John Edwards and Edward Edwards, by turns to begin next first day at the House of Abram Lukens and to Continue every first day to the End of the third month.

At our Monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 30th of the 1st Mo. 1753.

1st The Friend appointed to Attend the Marriage of Joseph Dyer report that it was acommplished Orderly.

2nd Rees Harry and Ellin Roberts declared their Intentions of Marriage with each other the second time, and nothing appearing to impede their proceeding, are therefore left to their Liberty to Consumate their said Intentions, Thomas Foulke and John Jones are appointed to see it Orderly Accomplished.

3rd The Friend appointed to read the Paper drawn against Evan Roberts has accordingly done it.

4th The Friends appointed to inquire and draw a Certificate for John Wells and Family to Exeter Monthly Meeting and One for James Packer to Bradford Monthly Meeting have accordingly done them which were read approved and signed.

5th John Cunrad gave into this Meeting a Paper Condemning that he had gone out in Marriage, with desires to be continued under the Care of Friends, which is received on tryal of his future Conduct.

6th John Roberts gave into this Meeting a paper Condemning, Acknowledging himself guilty of Fornication and Sorrow for the Same, said paper is Ordered to be read at the Close of a first day Meeting at Gwynedd before our next Meeting.

7th Rees Harry signified to this Meeting that he and Jeptha Lewis had chosen Refferees to Settle the Difference between them.
