Woodman—Lewis S. Woodman, 96, on March 14, 2019, peacefully, at Pennswood Village in Newtown, Pa. Lew was born at home on June 16, 1922, in Morrisville, Pa., to Adeline and Isaac Woodman along with his twin brother, Tom, delivered by their doctor father, who died soon after their birth. Lew and Tom, introduced to Quakerism by their half-siblings, joined Trenton (N.J.) Meeting and became active in Young Adult Friends, where Lew met his future wife, JoAnn Johnson. Lew and JoAnn joined Newtown Meeting before marrying there in 1950, attracted by Quaker values, particularly service, integrity, peace, and community.
He served in Civilian Public Service with the Brethren in 1944–47 in Florida, California, Nevada, and New Hampshire, making lasting friends. When he completed his service, he worked for a Quaker carpenter and then for another Quaker carpenter while building his own home. He worked at a lumberyard for 24 years, retiring in 1987.
He then volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for ten years. Once he moved to Pennswood in 1998, he served on several committees and applied his love for working with his hands to recaning and repairing chairs. He contributed his gift for fixing things to Newtown Meeting, Camp Onas, Newtown Friends School, and Friends Home and Village, while serving on the boards of these organizations. Lew was known for saying little but contributing something valuable and thoughtful when he did speak. He shared his love of nature, gardening, and caring for his home with his family.
His final act of service was donating his body to the Humanity Gifts Registry. He is survived by two children, Susan Hoskins (Scott) and Tom Woodman (Mary); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
