Making my Bed

I unfolded the map of the pillowcase
and fitted the four corners of the dream world
in, leaving the next resident to trace
their night journey with its cool, white folds.

I unfurled the bottom sheet that knew the way
soothing the mattress with a cotton caress.
The partner top floated and had its say
then waited patiently for the coverlet next.

I would not lie down there again. Bags packed
I rechecked the bureauā€™s wooden drawers.
I flicked the switch but turned to look back
and wished a hundred nights and even more

to hear the breeze rustle outside the screen
and watch foliage turn from black to green.
