This book has a conversational writing style that made me chuckle, even as there was no doubt how committed Cavey is to his subject matter. It’s interesting that no sooner did I start wincing at his use of the pronouns “him” and “his” for God that an explanation popped up. And during his discussion of what “evangelism” really means, no sooner did I think “I can’t/don’t want to do that” that he came out with an explanation of how it’s really unkind not to share the good news. I think he really means it when he says this book is for seekers, saints, and sinners. If you are fully committed to Jesus as the incarnation of the God of Love, you’ll be right at home. If you’re seeking and open to an introduction to Jesus, you’ll get a very fresh one. (His “good news in thirty words”: Jesus is God with us, come to show us God’s love, save us from sin, set up God’s kingdom, and shut down religion so we can share in God’s life.) If you’re a sinner, which he defines as one who acknowledges their distance from God, then this book is an invitation to accept God’s forgiveness. If, on the other hand, you are totally put off by a book that interprets the gospels as the good news of God’s love for you and plan for your life—well, Cavey invites you to read The End of Religion, his earlier book.
