What does Quakerism require of us when we hold someone in the Light? It is easy enough for me to hold the people I love in the Light, and even to hold strangers in the Light when they encounter sorrows and challenges. But I think we are called to do something harder, and that is to search for the humanity of those we despise or whose conduct we deplore, to understand with Terence that “nothing human can be alien to me.”
