Stephen Allen Hawk

Hawk—Stephen Allen Hawk, 73, on March 10, 2017, in Chicago, Ill., after a long illness. Steve was born on July 20, 1943, in Richmond, Ind., to Helen Louise Gluys and David Carlton Hawk. Over the course of his childhood he lived in Indiana, Ohio, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. He received a bachelor’s from Earlham College in 1966, meeting Inez Andrews, called Peggy, while he was there. He and Peggy married in 1967.

Raised in a Quaker family, Steve embraced the values of many Friends. The most public demonstration of his faith was during the Vietnam War, when he risked jail time by asserting his conscientious objection to the war. He performed his alternative service at Friends Committee on National Legislation and William Penn House. Following his service, he worked for 37 years at the Social Security Administration in Baltimore, Md.—part of the government that provided a social good without directly supporting the war apparatus.

He was a member of Stony Run Meeting in Baltimore and also active with American Friends Service Committee, Mid-Atlantic Region. Soon after retiring, he and Peggy moved into the Admiral at the Lake, a Kendal retirement community in Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Roger Hawk. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Inez Hawk; a son, Andrew Hawk (Laura); one granddaughter; one brother, Arnold Hawk (Susan); a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Correll; and two nephews.
