Kwa hivyo ikiwa nilitaka kuwaelewa na uhusiano kati ya Quakers na utumwa, basi nilihitaji kuchukua mtazamo tofauti.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kwa<\/span> <i><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nini<\/span><br \/>\n<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  Quakers kukubali utumwa katika kipindi hiki? Jinsi gani walihalalisha utumwa ndani ya mtazamo wao wa kitheolojia? Maoni yao yalilinganishwaje na Wakristo wengine wa Ulaya waliokabili utumwa? Pia nilitaka kufikiria juu ya kile ambacho Ukristo unaweza kuwa ulimaanisha kuwafanya watumwa na kuwaweka huru wanaume na wanawake Weusi waliojiunga na wafuasi wa Quaker na vilevile madhehebu mengine. Walibadili dini lini na kwa nini? Haya yakawa maswali yaliyochochea utafiti wangu.     <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nilianza kwa kuiangalia Barbados kwa karibu. Barbados ilikuwa koloni muhimu zaidi ya Kiingereza katika karne ya kumi na saba. Iliwekwa makazi mnamo 1627, na wakoloni walianza kupanda tumbaku na kisha sukari. Wakati wakoloni wa Kiingereza hapo awali walitegemea nguvu kazi ya pamoja ya watumishi wa Uropa na watumwa wa Kiafrika, kufikia miaka ya 1650 Waafrika waliokuwa watumwa walikuwa wamekuwa wengi wa nguvu kazi.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quakerism ilianza kustawi karibu wakati huo huo. Wamishonari wawili wa Quaker, walioitwa Ann Austin na Mary Fisher, walitua kwenye kisiwa hicho mwaka wa 1655 na kufanikiwa kuwageuza\u2014au \u201ckusadikishwa\u201d kwa lugha ya Quaker\u2014wakaaji kadhaa wa kisiwa hicho. Kwa nini Quakers wangelaumiwa kwa uasi wa watumwa wakati walikuwa na ushuhuda wa amani? Nimejifunza, katika kufanya utafiti wa kihistoria, kwamba wakati kitu hakionekani kuwa na maana, unahitaji kuchimba. Mara nyingi ni makosa haya ambayo yanafichua jambo muhimu sana kuhusu mahali na wakati fulani.   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kutafakari upya Historia ya Utumwa, Rangi, na Kukomeshwa<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span class=\"dropcap\">S<\/span><!--\/.dropcap--> Quakers wa karne ya kumi na moja, nilikuja kuelewa, walikuwa wenye msimamo mkali lakini si kwa sababu walikuwa wakomeshaji. Ukuu wa Kiprotestanti ulikujaje kuwa ukuu wa Wazungu?  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Kutoka Ukuu wa Kiprotestanti hadi Ukuu Weupe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span class=\"dropcap\">Tayari<\/span><!--\/.dropcap--> tumeona jinsi ukuu wa Kiprotestanti ulivyopingwa. Ilipingwa na wamisionari, kutia ndani Waquaker, na Weusi waliokuwa watumwa na walio huru, ambao walitaka kuwa Wakristo: watu kama Marotta. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lakini katika kila kisa, ilipingwa tofauti. Baada ya muda, watu zaidi na zaidi waliokuwa watumwa na walio huru wa rangi walipigana hadi katika makanisa ya Kikristo, wakiongozwa na motisha za kitheolojia, vitendo, na kijamii.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mmoja wa watu hawa aliitwa Charles Cuffee. Sheria hiyo ilitangaza kwamba \u201ckila Mzungu anayedai kuwa ni Dini ya Kikristo . . . ambaye amefikia Umri kamili wa Miaka Ishirini na Moja, na kuwa na Ekari Kumi za Malipo Huru . . . atahesabiwa kuwa Mwenye Uhuru.\u201d   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Miaka kumi na miwili baadaye, wabunge waliboresha ufafanuzi wao wa Weupe zaidi. Sheria ya 1709 ilifafanua kwamba mtu &#8221;mweupe&#8221; hawezi kuwa na &#8221;dondoo&#8221; kutoka kwa &#8221;Negro,&#8221; na hivyo kuanzisha &#8221;sheria ya tone moja&#8221; kama ufafanuzi wa Weupe na kuweka msingi mpya wa utumwa na ukandamizaji wa kijamii ambao ulifanya rangi ionekane kama aina ya asili. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">kitu ambacho kilikuwa asili.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tunachoona hapa ni uainishaji wa Weupe kama kitengo cha kisheria ambacho kilikusudiwa haswa kuwatenga Wakristo Weusi huru kutoka kwa haki kamili za uraia. Watu wengi wanafikiri kwamba rangi ni ya kibaolojia, lakini imani hii ni uharibifu sana. Inahalalisha rangi na inaturuhusu kusahau kuwa Weupe uliundwa ili kuhalalisha na kuhalalisha ukosefu wa usawa. Tunaona katika ukuu wa Kiprotestanti kwamba dini inaweza kuwa chanzo cha uonevu. Lakini kwa hakika sivyo ilivyomaanisha kwa wanaume na wanawake waliokuwa watumwa ambao walipigana sana kubatizwa. Historia zetu zinahitaji kuweka mambo hayo mawili katika usawa, na hasa kutoruhusu utawala dhalimu wa ukuu wa Kiprotestanti kuwakatisha tamaa watu kwa uzoefu wa Wakristo Weusi waliokuwa watumwa na huru.   <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kwa wale wetu ambao tunajihusisha na mila ya Quaker\u2014kama nifanyavyo\u2014historia hii inatualika kufikiria kuhusu maana halisi ya kupambana na ukandamizaji.
