A Thousand Cranes

The dry wind rushes
through a hill of golden leaves
pushing them apart

And in the distance
I hear a bird crying out
sharply to no one

The papery leaves
and the moonlit sea bird’s call
are all that I hear

All else is drowning
Nature’s sounds erase the din
of the man-made world

There is something grand
lifting up a thousand cranes
Above the water
