British Friend Harvey Gillman deserves to be more widely read on our side of the Atlantic. This collection of articles from the British periodical The Friend has sensitive insights into words we use—or avoid. Gillman asks questions—admittedly familiar ones—about using religious vocabulary. Some words have original meanings that have been obscured and their true power lost. What if words offered glimpses into the Kingdom of God instead of pointing toward static definitions? In some cases, Gillman uses the origins of words to reveal their original meaning and power. Essays have titles such as “Christianity,” “Prayer,” and “Words as Sacraments.”
