He was the son of 2. Robert ap Lewis and 3. Gwrvyl verch Llewellyn ap David. He married (1) Jane verch Cadwalader. She was born Abt. 1585 in Fron Goch, Merionethshire or Carmenthshire, Wales (?). She was the daughter of Cadwalader ap Meredydd.

Evan Robert Lewis, fourth son, born circa 1585, died at Fron Goch, in the parish of Llanderfel in the Comot of Penllyn, Merionethshire, circa 1662. One of the early manuscript pedigrees of this family states the Evan Robert Lewis removed from Rhiwlas to Fron Goch. Rhiwlas is the estate of the Price family, who came from Ysputty-Ievan. The farm called Fron Goch is partly in the township of Ucheldref, in Llanfor parish, and partly in Llandderfel. The farm of Fron Goch has always paid tithes to both churches. Evan Robert Lewis married Jane.

Burial: September 28, 1668, Llandderfel Parish, Merionethshire Wales. Fron Goch is a small town just north of the market town of Y Bala, today in the Welsh administrative district of Gwynedd. The area about Fron Goch is the common origin of most of the first settlers of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania.

Evan Robert Lewis' wife Jane v. Cadwaladr was a descendant of the Price family who owned most of the lands in the part of Merionethshire from which the Gwynedd settlers came. A bit of her ancestry is HERE.

Robert Lewis married, first, Gwerfyl, daughter of Llewelyn ap David, of Llanrwst, Denbighshire. [Dwnn, ii. 278-9.] He married, secondly, after 1601, Jane Lloyd, who was living 24 April 1638.

Lewis ap Gruffydd, under the designation of lewes ap Gruff, is assessed in the parish of "Sputty" (hundred of "Islaet")(Yspytty Evan) "in bonis" vij li (7 pounds), it being an assessment for the first payment of the Subsidy. He died prior to 43 Eliz (1601), [Dwnn, ii., 279], and was buried at Yspytty Evan Church.

Lewis ap Gruffydd married Ellen, daughter of Edward ap Evan of the parish of Llanwddyn, Montgomeryshire, ap Tudor ap David ap Evan Ddu. The mother of Ellen was Catherine, daughter of Gruffydd ap Llewelyn ap Einion. This Einion was the son of David ap Ieuan ap Einion, the celebrated constable of Harlech Castle.

Thomas Allen Glenn, Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, Vol II, p. 79-80: Howel ap Einion, eldest son of Einion ap Deikws Ddu. [Evans MS. ped; Dwnn, ii., 278.] According to tradition he was at the battle of Bosworth Field, in 1485, and there is some evidence to show that he served as an archer, or man at arms, under his cousin, Maredydd ap Ieuan ap Robert. This Maredydd, in 1485, removed from Eifonydd, Llyen, to Nantconwy, adjacent to Yspytty Evan, in Denbighshire, where he purchased and leased large estates, and "to strengthen himself in the country" against the robbers who at that time made their home within the Sanctuary of Ysputty Evan, then belonging to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and who numbered "above a hundred, well horsed and well appointed," he "provided out of all parts adjacent, the tallest and most able men he could hear of. Of these he placed colonists in the country filling every empty tenement with a tenant or two, whereof most was on the king's land," and within the space of a few years "was able to make seven score tall bowmen of his followers," who were armed thus: Each man had an "armorlett coate," a steel-cap, short sword and dagger, with bow and arrows, most of them being mounted, and having chasing staves (hunting spears or lances), and they were bond "to answer the crie (summons to arms) upon all events." As the home of Maredydd was only about fifteen miles from Penllech, it is reasonable to suppose, taking their relationship into consideration, that Howel and his brother, Ieuan ap Einion, accompanied him to the neighbourhood of Yspytty Evan. At any rate, the sons of both brothers were living in the latter place in 1543.

Rhys succeeded to the throne of Deheubarth on the death of his brother Maredudd in 1155. It was a remarkably peaceful and bloodless succession. Between 1158 and 1165 Rhys was under heavy pressure from Henry II. He was persuaded to submit, despite the loss of territory involved when Ceredigion and Cantref Bychan were restored to their Norman lords. Immediate retaliation by Rhys and his kinsmen, an attempt to take Carmarthen in 1159, and a successful attack on Llandovery in 1162 pointed for Henry II a recurrent danger. The Welsh prince would not accept an enhanced Anglo-Norman presence in West Wales. For Rhys, submission and defiance were part of the dynamic border conflict. In the late 1160s the political climate in south Wales changed and Henry had ot reassess the place of the Welsh prince and the marcher lords in his polity.

The change sprung from Richard Stongbow's interest in Ireland. Ireland was a magnet for men from west Wales, and in particular for the sons and grandsons of Nest, daughter of Rhys ap Tewdwr. To check their independence in Ireland, Henry embarked on his own expedition in 1171; he and his successors retained a close interest in the Irish lands conquered by Anglo-Norman settlers, and royal officials played an important part in their affairs. In Wales, it was a valuable expedient for the king and the prince of Deheubarth to make common cause; how soon this was mooted is hard to say, but by the autumn of 1171 the terms of their rapprochement had been agreed. For Rhys, the first and most important result was the confirmation of his tenure of the lands he had conquered, Ceredigion, Cantref Bychan, Emlyn and two commotes near Carmarthen. The final confirmation on his standing came with the style justiciar for south Wales; an English title which carried the clear delegation of royal authority was used to cover jurisdiction over Welsh leaders and communities which looked to Rhys from the lordships of Gwynllwg, Usk, Caerleon, Glamorgan, Elfael and Maelienydd.

While Henry lived, Rhys was a trusted agent and ally. For his part, Rhys was content to make the most of his relationship with the king, but he continued to think and act as an independent Welsh prince. He rebuilt Cardigan Castle for his own use, and he used marriage alliances to consolidate his position. As the 12th century drew to a close, Rhys was once again engaged in campaigning against the crown and the greater lords of the southern march, and at the same time he was deeply implicated in internal feuds among his kindred. These struggles presaged the decline of his dynasty and the eclipse of his kingdom. By the time of his death in 1197 he had been an active participant in war and politics for sixty years, and he had been the dominate ruling prince in Wales for more than forty years.

Rhys had probably intended that his eldest legitimate son, Gruffudd ap Rhys would inherit the kingdom, but his succession was challenged by two other sons, Maelgwyn ap Rhys (d. 1231) and Rhys Gryg (d. 1223). A vigorous struggle ensued, and castles were captured and recaptured in a period of prolonged conflict between the brothers, and -after the death of Gruffudd - his sons Rhys Ieunanc ap Gruffudd and Owain ap Gruffydd. The main beneficiaries of this tragic conflict within Deheubarth were outsiders. The English king, Anglo-Norman lords of the March and native Welsh neighbours, all took advantage until once again the days of independence seemed numbered. Finally, it was by the power of the prince of Gwynedd, llywelyn ap Iorwerth, that a settlement was made in 1216. He induced the claimants to accept a tripartite partition of Deheubarth. They were all now rulers by the grace of llywelyn, diminished in stature and relegated to a lesser role in history. Deheubarth was never to recover the status it had enjoyed under the Lord Rhys. Despite this, it was in these decades that Dinefwr castle (principle stronghold of Lord Rhys) achieved its mighty masonry construction before being eventually lost to King Edward I.

In 1198 William Martin made an exchange of lands in Combs Martin, in Devon, with Warin de Morsells, who had married his sister Sybil. He married Ankaret, daughter of Rhys ap Griffith, Prince of Wales, but in 1191 Rhys, contrary to his oath, expelled William Martin from the Castle of Nevern, giving it to his own son Griffin. William died 1208/9, when his son and heir owed 300 marks as relief. His widow died in or shortly before August 1226.

Gruffydd fuled mainly Cantref Mawr (1116-1137) and died in battle in 1137.

After his death in 1137 his four sons worked closely together to defend and consolidate their territory. Each son, Anarawd, Cadell, Maredudd and Rhys took the lead in succession, and there seems to have been no discord between them. Their raids extended from west Wales to the lordship of Glamorgan. Anarawd was assassinated by men from north Wales in 1143; Cadell and his younger brothers achieved the reconquest of Ceredigion, making it once more part of Deheubarth, before Cadell was wounded so severly by normans from Tenby that he was effectively removed from the political scene. Maredudd died in 1155, leaving Rhys as ruler of the southern kingdom.

1 William succeeded his father as Lord of Abergavenny (right), Builth and other Marcher Lordships in1227. Styled by the Welsh as "Black William" he was imprisoned by Llewelyn ap Iorwerth in 1229 during Hubert de Burgh's disastrous Kerry (Ceri) campaign. He was ransomed and released after a short captivity during which he agreed to cede Builth as a marriage portion for his daughter Isabella on her betrothal to David, son and heir of Llewelyn. The following Easter, Llewelyn discovered an intrigue between his wife, Joan, and William. Supported by a general clamour for his death, Llewelyn had William publicly hanged on 2nd May 1230.

1 After Llewelyn Fawr had hanged Eva's husband, William, he wrote letters (see translations) to her and her brother, William, Earl of Pembroke. He was inquiring whether the marriage between his son, Dafydd, and Isabella de Braose should still go ahead. Evidently they agreed that it should. Nevertheless Llewelyn and Dafydd were never satisfied with the distribution of William's lands among his four heiresses and this led to further armed conflicts in the marches. Eva continued to hold Braose lands and castles in her own right after the death of her husband. Dugdale mentions her as holder of Totnes in 1230. It is recorded in the Close Rolls (1234-7) that Henry III granted 12 marks to her to strengthen the castle at Hay.

Owain succeeded his father, Gruffydd ap Cyanan as ruler of Gwynedd in 1138. His 32 year reign was a bloody and turbulent time of constant warfare between the Norman barons and the Welsh chieftans. Though he strived during his rule for both the prosperity of his people and the unity of all Welsh kingdoms against the English, his aims were hindered by the treacherous feuding within his own ranks. Although well known for his fierce and brutal penalties for disloyalty, he was nevertheless remembered as a mighty soldier and a great leader by his own people, and considered the King of Wales by those in England and other lands. He was said to have 17 sons and at least 2 daughters, although few were considered legitimate by the churchmen of his time. This led to a civil war between his sons at his death in 1169.

One of his sons, Madoc, possibly discovered America about 1170, returned to Wales and then left for America again to settle with some of his countrymen to escape the civil war in Wales. The possible destination was Mobile Bay, Alabama where ruins of three pre-Columbian forts have been found by archaeologists. The first of these forts found on top of Lookout Mountain, near DeSoto Falls, Alabama, was found to be nearly identical in setting, layout and method of construction to Dolwyddelan Castle in Gwynedd, the presumed birthplace of Madoc. Later they moved to Fort Mountain, Georgia atop a 3000 foot mountain with a main defensive wall 855 feet long. Finally they moved north to the forks of the Duck River near present day Manchester, TN and built a fort with 20 feet high stone walls containing 50 acres and protected by a moat 1200 feet long. These Welsh were later driven to Missouri and west by the Cherokee, where they blended into the Indians there (according to Cherokee legend and John Sevier). John Sevier was told by Oconostota (Cherokee headman) that the Whites followed the Tennessee River down to the Ohio, up the Ohio to the missouri, then up the Missouri...for a great distance...but they are no more White people; they are now all become Indians..." The most likely tribe to have assimilated them are the Mandan, a tribe that was more or less wiped out in a small pox epidemic in 1837. This story of course is a controversy amongst Historians.

The Magna Carta is the foundation of English Constitutional law and liberties and placed the King, like the subjects he ruled, subject to the rule of law. He is Interred in Worcester Cathedral. He was the youngest son of Henry II and Eleanor. His birthdate is also listed as 1167 in CD-102, Warren's book "King John"., and the "Kings & Queens of England & Scotland." He was an unpopular King largely due to the fact that he was not the great fighter kings were expected to be at the time. He is listed as hedonistic, unstable and unforgiving. At the same time he was highly intelligent, efficient, sophisticated, well educated in law and government and he loved to read often carrying books with him on his travels.

Much of his troubles sprang from problems that grew during his father's and brother's reign. He lost ground to Phillip II of France. He lost political power with the Pope. His barons rebelled and forced restoration

According to a fictionalized account, "Falls the Shadow", Eleanor was betrothed to William Marshall at a very young age for political and monetary reasons. As most all royal marriages occured in this way, it was perfectly normal. Her marriage to William ended when she was only 15 at her husbands death. She was then convinced by a very close caretaker to take the oath of fidelity from the Pope. This gave her many of the vows of
a nun. She never fit well into this as she was a very beautiful blond haired women who enjoyed the company of men. Though she religiously upheld her vows, she fell hopelessly in love with Simon de Monfert after reaching the age of adulthood. They married secretly with the forced assistance of her brother, King Henry. Simon then convinced the Pope with monetary gifts to rescind his wife's vow of Abstinence. This was to say a very scandalous set of circumstances. Simon de Montfert was well below Eleanor's social status to add to boot. This is a love conquers all theme in the novel "Falls the Shadow."

1 At his peak Lord of Bramber, Gower, Abergavenny, Brecknock, Builth, Radnor, Kington, Limerick and the three castles of Skenfrith, Grosmont (right) and Whitecastle. William inherited Bramber, Builth and Radnor from his father; Brecknock and Abergavenny through his mother. He was the strongest of the Marcher Lords involved in constant war with the Welsh and other lords. He was particularly hated by the Welsh for the massacre of three Welsh princes, their families and their men which took place during a feast at his castle of Abergavenny in 1175. He was sometimes known as the "Ogre of Abergavenny". One of the Normans' foremost warriors, he fought alongside K.Richard at Chalus in 1199 (when Richard received his fatal wound). William received Limerick in 1201 from K. John. He was also given custody of Glamorgan, Monmouth and Gwynllwg in return for large payments. William captured Arthur, Count of Brittany at Mirebeau in 1202 and was in charge of his imprisonment for King John. He was well rewarded in February 1203 with the grant of Gower. He may have had knowledge of the murder of Arthur and been bribed to silence by John with the city of Limerick in July. His honours reached their peak when he was made Sheriff of Herefordshire by John for 1206-7. He had held this office under Richard from 1192 to 1199. His fall began almost immediately. In the 9th of the latter king's reign, Walter de Lacie obtained a confirmation of his lands and dominion of Meath in Ireland, to be held by him and his heirs for the service of 50 knights' fees; as also his fees in Fingall, in the valley of Dublin, to be held by the service of seven knights' fees. Owain succeeded his father, Gruffydd ap Cyanan as ruler of Gwynedd in 1138. His 32 year reign was a bloody and turbulent time of constant warfare between the Norman barons and the Welsh chieftans. Though he strived during his rule for both the prosperity of his people and the unity of all Welsh kingdoms against the English, his aims were hindered by the treacherous feuding within his own ranks. Although well known for his fierce and brutal penalties for disloyalty, he was nevertheless remembered as a mighty soldier and a great leader by his own people, and considered the King of Wales by those in England and other lands. He was said to have 17 sons and at least 2 daughters, although few were considered legitimate by the churchmen of his time. This led to a civil war between his sons at his death in 1169.

One of his sons, Madoc, possibly discovered America about 1170, returned to Wales and then left for America again to settle with some of his countrymen to escape the civil war in Wales. The possible destination was Mobile Bay, Alabama where ruins of three pre-Columbian forts have been found by archaeologists. The first of these forts found on top of Lookout Mountain, near DeSoto Falls, Alabama, was found to be nearly identical in setting, layout and method of construction to Dolwyddelan Castle in Gwynedd, the presumed birthplace of Madoc. Later they moved to Fort Mountain, Georgia atop a 3000 foot mountain with a main defensive wall 855 feet long. Finally they moved north to the forks of the Duck River near present day Manchester, TN and built a fort with 20 feet high stone walls containing 50 acres and protected by a moat 1200 feet long. Joan was born at Angers, in Anjou, and spent her youth at her mother's courts at Winchester and Poitiers. In 1176, King William II of Sicily sent ambassadors to the English court to ask for Joan's hand in marriage. The betrothal was confirmed on May 20, and on August 27 Joan set sail for Sicily, escorted by the bishop of Norwich and her uncle, Hamelin de Warenne, 5th Earl of Surrey. In Saint Gilles, her entourage was met by representatives of the Kingdom of Sicily: Alfano, Archbishop of Capua, and Richard Palmer, Bishop of Syracuse.

After a hazardous voyage, Joan arrived safely, and on February 13, 1177, she married William II of Sicily and was crowned Queen of Sicily at Palermo Cathedral. They had one son, Bohemond, born in 1181 and who died in infancy. Following William's death in 1189, she was kept a prisoner by the new king, Tancred of Sicily. Finally, her brother Richard I of England arrived in Italy in 1190, on the way to the Holy Land. He demanded her return, along with every penny of her dowry. When Tancred baulked at these demands, Richard seized a monastery and the castle of La Bagnara. He decided to spend the winter in Italy and attacked and subdued the city of Messina. Finally, Tancred agreed to the terms and sent Joan's dowry. In March 1191 Eleanor of Aquitaine arrived in Messina with Richard's bride, Berengaria of Navarre.

Eleanor returned to England, leaving Berengaria in Joan's care. Richard decided to postpone his wedding, put his sister and bride on a ship, and set sail. Two days later the fleet was hit by a fierce storm, destroying several ships and blew Joan and Berengaria's ship off course. Richard landed safely in Crete, but they were stranded near Cyprus. The self-appointed despot of Cyprus, Isaac Comnenus was just about to capture them when Richard's fleet suddenly appeared. The princesses were saved, but the despot made off with Richard's treasure. Richard pursued and captured Isaac, threw him into a dungeon, and sent Joan and Berengaria on to Acre.

Joan was Richard's favourite sister, but he was not above using her as a bargaining chip in his political schemes. He even suggested marrying her to Saladin's brother, Al-Adil, and making them joint rulers of Jerusalem. This plan fell apart when Joan refused to marry a Muslim and Al-Adil refused to marry a Christian. King Philip II of France also expressed some interest in marrying her, but this scheme, too, failed (possibly on grounds of affinity, since Philip's father Louis VII had formerly been married to her mother). Instead Joan was married in 1196 to Raymond VI of Toulouse, with Quercy and the Agenais as her dowry. She was the mother of his successor Raymond VII of Toulouse (1197-1249).

This new husband treated her none too gently, however, and Joan came to fear him and his knights. In 1199, while pregnant with a second child, Joan was left to face alone a rebellion in which the lords of Saint-Félix-de-Caraman were prominent. She laid siege to their castle at les Cassès but was menaced by treachery. Escaping this threat, Joan travelled northwards, hoping for her brother's protection, but found him dead at Chalus.[1] She then fled to her mother Queen Eleanor's court at Rouen, where she was offered refuge and care. Joan asked to be admitted to Fontevrault Abbey, an unusual request for a married, pregnant woman, but this request was granted. She died in childbirth and was veiled a nun on her deathbed. Her son lived just long enough to be baptised (he was named Richard). Joan was thirty-three years old. She was buried at Fontevrault Abbey, and fifty years later her son Raymond VII would be interred next to her.

Rhys had probably intended that his eldest legitimate son, Gruffudd ap Rhys would inherit the kingdom, but his succession was challenged by two other sons, Maelgwyn ap Rhys (d. 1231) and Rhys Gryg (d. 1223). A vigorous struggle ensued, and castles were captured and recaptured in a period of prolonged conflict between the brothers, and -after the death of Gruffudd - his sons Rhys Ieunanc ap Gruffudd and Owain ap Gruffydd. The main beneficiaries of this tragic conflict within Deheubarth were outsiders. The English king, Anglo-Norman lords of the March and native Welsh neighbours, all took advantage until once again the days of independence seemed numbered. Finally, it was by the power of the prince of Gwynedd, llywelyn ap Iorwerth, that a settlement was made in 1216. He induced the claimants to accept a tripartite partition of Deheubarth. They were all now rulers by the grace of llywelyn, diminished in stature and relegated to a lesser role in history. Deheubarth was never to recover the status it had enjoyed under the Lord Rhys. Despite this, it was in these decades that Dinefwr castle (principle stronghold of Lord Rhys) achieved its mighty masonry construction before being eventually lost to King Edward I.

Gruffudd ap Llywelyn, (1007-63) was King of all Wales from 1055 to 1063, and he was the only Welsh ruler to unite the ancient kingdoms of the whole of Wales. Gwynfor Evans points out that though for five centuries the people of Wales had shared a common language, culture, history, religion and for the most part a common law, it was only under Gruffudd ap Llywelyn that it had a single sovereign, and thus a measure of political unity.

The son of King Duncan I, Malcolm lived in exile in England during part of the reign of his father's murderer, Macbeth. Malcolm killed Macbeth in battle in 1057 and then ascended the throne. After the conquest of England by William the Conqueror, in 1066, Malcolm gave refuge to the Anglo-Saxon prince Edgar the Aetheling and his sisters, one of whom, Margaret (later St. Margaret), became his second wife. Malcolm acknowledged the overlordship of William in 1072 but nevertheless soon violated his feudal obligations and made five raids into England. During the last of these invasions he was killed by the forces of King William II Rufus (reigned 1087-1100), near Alnwick, Northumberland, England. Except for a brief interval after Malcolm's death, the Scottish throne remained in his family until the death of Queen Margaret, the Maid of Norway, in 1290. Of Malcolm's six sons by Margaret, three succeeded to the throne: Edgar (reigned 1097-1107), Alexander I (1107-24), and David I (1124-53).

Notes for King of Scotland David I The Saint King of Scotland: [Sue_Cary.ged] One of the most powerful Scottish kings (reigned from 1124). He admitted into Scotland an Anglo-French (Norman) aristocracy that played a major part in the later history of the kingdom. He also reorganized Scottish Christianity to conform with continental European and English usages and founded many religious communities, mostly for Cistercian monks and Augustinian canons. The youngest of the six sons of the Scottish king Malcolm III Canmore and Queen Margaret (afterward St. Margaret), David spent much of his early life at the court of his brother-in-law King Henry I of England. Through David's marriage (1113) to a daughter of Waltheof, earl of Northumbria, he acquired the English earldom of Huntingdon and obtained much land in that county and in Northamptonshire. With Anglo-Norman help, David secured from his brother Alexander I, king of Scots from 1107, the right to rule Cumbria, Strathclyde, and part of Lothian. In April 1124, on the death of Alexander, David became king of Scots.

David recognized his niece, the Holy Roman empress Matilda (died 1167), as heir to Henry I in England, and from 1136 he fought for her against King Stephen (crowned as Henry's successor in December 1135), hoping thereby to gain Northumberland for himself. A brief peace made with Stephen in 1136 resulted in the cession of Cumberland to David and the transfer of Huntingdon to his son Earl Henry. David, however, continued to switch sides. While fighting for Matilda again, he was defeated in the Battle of the Standard, near Northallerton, Yorkshire (Aug. 22, 1138). He then made peace once more with Stephen, who in 1139 granted Northumberland (as an English fief) to Earl Henry. In 1141 David reentered the war on Matilda's behalf, and in 1149 he knighted her son Henry Plantagenet (afterward King Henry II of England), who acknowledged David's right to Northumberland.

In Scotland, David created a rudimentary central administration, issued the first Scottish royal coinage, and built or rebuilt the castles around which grew the first Scottish burghs: Edinburgh, Stirling, Berwick, Roxburgh, and perhaps Perth. As ruler of Cumbria he had taken Anglo-Normans into his service, and during his kingship many others settled in Scotland, founding important families and intermarrying with the older Scottish aristocracy. Bruce, Stewart, Comyn, and Oliphant are among the noted names whose bearers went from northern France to England during the Norman Conquest in 1066 and then to Scotland in the reign of David I. To these and other French-speaking immigrants, David granted land in return for specified military service or contributions of money, as had been done in England from the time of the Conquest.

T. A. Glenn (WFP, Vol. I):  Evan Robert Lewis appears to have acquired or assumed the epithet of Llwyd (or Lloyd), by which he was occasionally designated, and which his son, Evan Lloyd Evan (otherwise Evan ap Evan), adopted as a surname. He removed from Rhiwias to Vron Goch and there passed the remainder of his life. He is described as an honest sober man. He had five sons, all taking for themselves, in the Welsh manner, the surname ap Evan.

One of the early manuscript pedigrees of this family states the Evan Robert Lewis removed from Rhiwlas to Fron Goch. Rhiwlas is the estate of the Price family, who came from Ysputty-Ievan. The farm called Fron Goch is partly in the township of Ucheldref, in Llanfor parish, and partly in Llandderfel. The farm of Fron Goch has always paid tithes to both churches. Evan Robert Lewis married Jane.

To him came much land which belonged formerly to the abbey of Strata Marcella (Ystrad Marchell), near Welshpool. Cadwaladr held lands in the commote of Penllyn in the time of Philip and Mary. The bard and herald Gruffudd Hiraethog sent him a cywydd (c. 1530) requesting him to send a ram to Mrs. Mostyn.

Notes for John Wynn Cadwaladr: When Lewis Dwnn, deputy herald at arms, visited Rhiwlas on 21 July 1588, he received the pedigree of the family at the hands of ‘John Cadd,’ i.e., John (Wynn) ap Cadwaladr ap Robert ap Rhys (son of Cadwaladr Price) (Visitations, ii, 228-9). He was high sheriff of Merioneth, 1576-7 and 1585-6, and Member of Parliament for the county in 1559. He m. Jane, daughter and heiress of Thomas ap Robert, Llwyn Dedwydd, Llangwm, Denbs. Siôn Tudur wrote a cywydd in which he asks John Wynn to give a gun to Humphrey Thomas of Bodelwyddan.

After the dissolution of the monasteries he acquired much land (Dôl Gynwal) in Ysbyty Ifan. According to letters from him to Henry VIII he also held much land in the parish of Llanfor. Sir Robert's wife was Mared (Margaret), daughter of Rhys (Rhydderch?) Llwyd, Gydros, Llanfor; their numerous children included the heir, CADWALADR (Price) (below), Dr. Elis Prys (q.v.), Plas Iolyn, Denbs., Thomas Vaughan, Pant Glas (see under Vaughan, Pant Glas), and two other sons who became abbots of Aberconway (Griffith, Pedigrees, 204). Sir Robert, who became cross-bearer to Cardinal Wolsey, d. before or in 1534; his will was proved at the P.C.C. of Canterbury; he also was buried in Ysbyty Ifan church.

http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-PRYS-ELI-1512.html: He was born at the beginning of the 16th cent., and was educated at Cambridge, graduating Ll.B. in 1533, and D.C.L. in 1534, and from the red gown of his degree he was known as ‘Y Doctor Coch’ (‘The Red Doctor’). He m. Ellyw, daughter of Owen Pool of Llandecwyn, Merioneth, by whom he had seven children, two sons and five daughters, Thomas (q.v.) being the elder son. In 1535 Thomas Cromwell appointed him one of the visitors of monasteries in Wales, and he took a prominent part in the destruction of the monasteries. In 1538 Cromwell made him a commissary-general of the diocese of S. Asaph, and gave him the sinecure rectory of Llangwm, Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, and Llanuwchllyn. In the reigns of Mary and Elizabeth he devoted himself to civil administration; he was three times Member of Parliament for Merioneth; he was sheriff of Merioneth seven times; sheriff of Denbighshire four times; sheriff of Anglesey twice; and once of Caernarvonshire. He was custos rotulorum of Merioneth for the greater part of Elizabeth's reign.

He was also a member of the Council of the Marches, and in 1561 he was made chancellor of Bangor and rector of Llaniestyn; in Feb. 1565 he was suggested for the bishopric of Bangor, but archbishop Parker objected, because Price was neither a priest nor worthy to be a priest. In 1560 he obtained from the Crown the manor of Tir Ifan, with lands at Ysbyty and Penmachno. He was a great friend of Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester, and when Elizabeth gave the lordship of Denbigh as a gift to the earl in 1564, Price was one of his tenants, and became a tool of oppression in his land. Thomas Pennant refers to him as ‘a creature of the earl of Leicester and devoted to all his bad designs.’ He was a patron of the bards, and his name is the first in the list of esquires in the commission granted by queen Elizabeth to hold the eisteddfod at Caerwys, 1567.

His will was made on 3 Aug. 1590, a codicil added 6 May 1594, and probate granted 24 May 1596; so he d. between May 1594 and May 1596. Thomas Prys of Plas Iolyn (q.v.) was his son.

The family belongs to the same stock as those of Plas Iolyn, Voelas, Cernioge, and Rhiwlas; the genealogy is to be found in J. E. Griffith, Pedigrees, 44, where, however, it is incomplete and incorrect. THOMAS VAUGHAN (I) was the grandson of Rhys ap Meredydd of Ysbyty Ifan, and was the younger son of Robert ap Rhys; in his will (1534), Robert ap Rhys left his Dol-gynwal lands to ‘Thomas Vichan ap Robert ap Rice.’ This Thomas Vaughan was twice married, and the following line is descended from his second marriage, with Catherine Conway of Bryn Euryn, whose will was proved in 1588; as William Llyn (q.v.) (d. 1580) wrote an elegy on him, he too must have d. before 1580. His heir was THOMAS VAUGHAN (II), who is mentioned in cywyddau written by his friend Thomas Prys (q.v.) of Plas Iolyn; he is said to have d. in 1654, but this is very doubtful, for a will proved in 1640 suggests that he was already dead. He was succeeded by his eldest son, JOHN VAUGHAN, who was alive in 1640; he, too, is said to have d. in 1654 but, again, this is very doubtful, for he is referred to in a document dating from about 1636 as an ‘old man’ (additionally, it is stated that the estate is worth £400 a year), and according to the pedigree in ‘Llyfr Silin’ he was survived by his son Henry; his widow Joan (Townshend, of Shropshire) d. at Pant Glas at the end of 1663 or beginning of 1664, at the age of 74. John Vaughan was succeeded by HENRY VAUGHAN (I) who is, almost unanimously, stated to have been killed in the Civil War in the assault on Hopton castle, Shropshire, in the month of Feb. 1644; but the author of The Garrisons of Shropshire, 1642-8, claims that the ‘Captain Vaughan’ slain at Hopton was one of the unrelated Vaughans of Shropshire. At any rate, Henry Vaughan was ‘deceased’ before Feb. 1654/5, when his eldest son became a member of Gray's Inn; his widow, Margaret, daughter of Bonham Norton of Church Stretton (some of that family are in the D.N.B.) d. 8 Dec. 1669, at Glyn in Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, at the age of 91. They had four children — not five as stated by Griffith. (1) THOMAS VAUGHAN (III); little is known about him. He became a member of Gray's Inn in Feb. 1645/5; m. Lucy, daughter of chief justice Sir John Vaughan (q.v.), of Trawsgoed, Cards., and there are several references to him in the Gwydir papers; but the dates of his birth and death are alike unknown — it should perhaps be explained that the Ysbyty Ifan parish registers before 1731 have disappeared. Neither his name nor those of his sons occur in a family will signed in July 1699 and proved the following year, but he was certainly alive in 1681. He had two sons: JOHN (who was living in 1692) and THOMAS (IV); Thomas probably lived to inherit the estate, but by 1697 or 1698 he, too, was dead, for the head of the family in that year was (2) HENRY VAUGHAN (II). There was a ‘Henry Vaughan’ who was churchwarden of the parish church at Llandrillo-yn-Rhos in 1677, and as the widow of Henry Vaughan (I) d. at Glyn in that parish, it is reasonable to suppose that he also was living there about 1697 — he was sheriff in 1698, when he was referred to as ‘Henry Vaughan of Pant Glas,’ and so he was called in the will (1699) referred to above, and in the Parochialia of Edward Lhuyd. The date of his death is not known. (3) KATHERINE VAUGHAN d. a spinster at Pant Glas shortly after 1700, leaving money for the building of alms-houses for women at Ysbyty Ifan. (4) ANNE VAUGHAN (who was possibly the elder daughter) who married into the family of the Williamses of Marl (qq.v.); as her brothers and her sister d. without heirs the Pant Glas lands were absorbed into the Marl estate, and the remainder of the story will be found under that heading.

Another member of the family is deserving of mention, namely RICHARD VAUGHAN (1621-1700) — erroneously stated by Griffith to be a son of Henry Vaughan (I), but it is by no means certain who he was. He fought in the Civil War, and was blinded. In July 1663 he was elected one of the ‘Poor Knights of Windsor,’ and d. 5 June 1700, ‘in his eightieth year,’ in Windsor castle, where he was buried. He left money for the building of an alms-house for men at Ysbyty Ifan.

The Price family of Rhiwlas, Llanfor, Merionethshire, claim descent from a distinguished line of uchelwyr who settled in south-west Denbighshire. The family included Rhys ap Maredudd, alias Rhys Mawr, who fought for Henry Tudor at Bosworth in 1485.

A fairly early ancestor who achieved some prominence was RHYS AP MEREDYDD (‘Rhys Fawr’) who lived somewhere at the foot of the south-western slopes of Mynydd Hiraethog, Denbighshire; it is thought that the old mansion of Foelas was his home. He was influential, rich, and a strong military leader. He raised a band of men from ‘Y Berfeddwlad’ and led it to Bosworth Field (1485) to join men from South Wales under Sir Rhys ap Thomas. By reason of his prowess at Bosworth, he received many favours at the hand of the new king (Henry VII). (Alabaster effigies of ‘Rhys Fawr’ and his wife, Lowry, are in Ysbyty Ifan church).
