Roberts family of Gwynedd Pennsylvania

Gwynedd Friends Meeting Historical Notes

Descendants of Robert CADWALADER

one of the Roberts families of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania

Introduction from Howard Jenkins "Historical Collections of Gwynedd" (1897), chapter 14

Note that the other Gwynedd Roberts families can be found on a separate web page.

It is designed in this chapter to give systematically what is known concerning the descendants of Robert Cadwalader, of Wales, whose children, in the Welsh manner, took the surname Robert, subsequently changed to Roberts. His sons were Cadwalader, Morris, Nicholas, John and Rowland, and he had one daughter, Elizabeth. All these, as well as their father, were in Gwynedd or Montgomery [township], within a few years after the earliest company of settlers. They came, there is good evidence to prove, from Bala, in Merionethshire; the journal of an English Friend, mentioning Rowland Robert's religious visit, speaks of Bala as his birthplace.

Cadwalader is said to have come with the first settlers in 1698, and there is reason to believe that he was accompanied by Morris. That they were among the company on the Robert and Elizabeth is not certain, but the family tradition is that upon the ship which brought them there was much sickness, and that Cadwalader, who was noted for his kind and benevolent character, was active in assisting those who were ill. Subsequently, the father, Robert Cadwalader, came over with his wife, and their other children: Nicholas, John, Rowland, and Elizabeth. Some of them, certainly John, settled first near Philadelphia, in Oxford township, but all of them had located in Gwynedd or Montgomery, within a few years after the first settlement. An old account book of Ellis Roberts, of Gwynedd, tailor (not of this family), shows that Morris Roberts bought buttons (Ellis spells it "butnes") of him, in the 9th mo., 1704, and that he had other dealings with Nicholas Roberts, as early as the 5th mo., 1705. Cadwalader's name appears as witness, on a marriage certificate, 3rd mo. 22, 1699. He bought land of Robert John in 1710, and his name is on the subscription paper for building the new meeting-house of 1712, - the subscriptions for the purpose being raised in 1710-11.

The parents, Robert Cadwalader and his wife, were old people when they came, and did not long survive. In the marriage certificate of their daughter Elizabeth, and Daniel Morgan, in 9th mo., 1718, Robert is spoken of as "late of Gwynedd," showing his death to have occurred previous to that time.

It is the tradition that none of the family were Friends at the time of their immigration, but if not, they soon joined the Society. John was married according to the order of Friends in 1706; Rowland in like manner in 1713; Cadwalader, in 1714; Nicholas in 1717; and Morris and Elizabeth, in 1718. Rowland was a minister among Friends, and so also was Elizabeth, as well as her husband Daniel Morgan.

From the marriage certificates (Gwynedd and Radnor MM) it is apparent that a second Roberts family of Gwynedd consisting of Evan, Ellis, John, William, Lowry and Jane are first cousins or other close relatives of the children of Robert Cadwalader. They sign the marriage certificates of Robert Cadwalader's children as a group and vice versa. The parents of this second Roberts family are not known.

7. There are extensive treatments of this family in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania by Thomas Allen Glenn (under the titles "Roberts of Gwynedd" and "Roberts Genealogy' - the latter which is similar to Howard Jenkins, and the former which is a long treatise on the Welsh ancestry of the Roberts family.)

This revision was made October 2009.

Summary of Thomas Allen Glenn's (7) take on the Welsh ancestry of this family:

a) Robert Cadwalader is a lineal descendent of Marchweithian of Isaled, a chieftain who was by legend a head of the eleventh of the "Fifteen Tribes" of North Wales, but in fact lived later (contemporary with Gruffydd ap Cynan 1080-1137 with whom he went into battle as an ally). The commot of Isaled is in the cantref of Rhuvoniog, in Perfeddwlad, Gwynedd containing part of Llanrahiadr and Denbigh in Merionethshire and Denbighshire and a portion of the Vale of Clwyd. Penllyn and Penmaen had been largely depopulated in the fight between Edward I and the Welsh, with most of the inhabitants killed and the land laid in ruins.

b) The ancestry of Robert Cadwalader, who removed to Gwynedd, is described thusly: his father was Cadwaladr ap Robert (ap Howel) who is named in 1636 in the Lay subsidy of Llangower. His father was Robert ap Howel, named in connection with a debt for a trifling sum, in the will of John ap Lewsi of Llangower dated 24 Mar 1572/3 and who died prior ot 3 Charles I (1627/8), leaving a son and heir Cadwaladr. His father was Howel ap Cadwaladr, lessee of the "Grange of Penllyn" also known as "of Llangower." His father was Cadwallader ap Robert and his grandfather was Sir Robert ap Rhys and the Llangower lands had probably been passed down throught them as part of the land held by Sir Robert ap Rhys under the Abbey of Basingwork. Howel or his grandson Cadwaladr secured other lands in Llanycil later, probably a leasehold.

c) Robert ap Rhys and his parents, Rhys "Fawr" ap Meredydd and his wife Lowry, have effigies on their tombs pictured in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania. Rhys Fawr was of Plas Iolyn (a ruin also photographed in Welsh Founders) and was one of the Lancastrian Captains at Bosworth Field on the Lancastrian side. He was entrusted by Henry VII with the Standard of England after Sir William Brandon was slain. Rhys was steward of the Abbey of Aberconwy, a position he inherited from his father Meredydd ap Tudor.

Generation No. 1

1. ROBERT1 CADWALLADER was born Abt. 1650 near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales, and died probably in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA before 1720 or perhaps January 1740 in Llanuwchllyn, Merionethshire, Wales. He married JANE JOHN Abt. 1672 in Wales, daughter of JOHN ap EVAN of Penmaen, Llanfawr (also called Llanfor), near Bala. She was born Abt. 1650 in Wales, and died possibly in Wales.

Howard Jenkins (1897): Robert Cadwalader, a man advanced in years, from one of the northern counties in Wales, immigrated with his wife (whose name is not definitely known) and three sons and a daughter (two sons having previously come), and settled about 1700, at Gwynedd. Both he and his wife suvived their removal but a few years.

History of the congregation of the Old Chapel , Llanuwchllyn, By R. T. Jenkins , (1937 ) - Page 28. It translates as follows - "It is interesting , while passing, to note the ones (reference to the Quakers) that went from Llanuwchllyn and Llangywer in these emigrations from 1682 - 1710. One of the emigrants was Robert Cadwaladr "of Llanuwchllyn" who was decended from the lineage of the Prices from Rhiwlas . His great grandfather had a home in Llangywer and his grandfather after him; his father Cadwaladr ap Robert had land in the parish of Llanycil as well, but it was not before the time of Robert Cadwaladr himself that we hear about Llanuwchllyn. Robert Cadwaladr married Jane, the daughter of [John ap Evan of] Penmaen in Llanycil - she belonging to a family of nobility. They had several children, and some of them were baptised in Llanuwchllyn ,some in Llangower and others in Llanycil. In 1698 Cadwaladr, their eldest son (who was born in 1673 and was baptised in Llanuwchllyn) went across to Pennsylvania and his brother Morris with him ; and in 1700 they were followed not only by two other brothers and their sister Elizabeth, but also by the old man their father. Like Robert Owen of Dolserau, Robert Cadwaladr died in America after a short time." (contributed by Elfed Owen)

Elfed Owen also contributes the following information: Jane John's father, John ap Evan of Penmaen left a will written Aug 1696., He left legacies to son Cadwalader John, Griffith John, Wm John, Rowland John, Gwen John , Catherine John and wife Margaret. Exec Gwen John (widow) and son in law Robert Cadwaladr of Llanuwchllyn. John ap Evan's son Cadwalader John of Llanycil, Bala also left a will written March 1723 - legacies left to sister Gwen John Evan and to brother in law Robert Cadwalader of Llanuwchllyn and to Cadwalader John's wife. This shows that Robert Cadwalader is alive in 1723 and living in Wales, perhaps never having emigrated to America. However this is in conflict with Howard Jenkins' notation of the marriage certificates of his children which calls him Robert Cadwalader deceased in the 1710s. There is also a Jane John whose death is recorded in the Llanuwchllyn parish records in 1695 who may or may not be the wife of Robert Cadwalader (which would explain why she is left out of her father's will but is again in conflict with Jenkins). Robert Cadwalader and Jane's children (as listed below) are all recorded in the parish records except for Nicholas. This makes the conflicts difficult to resolve. The possibility exists that there may be two Robert Cadwaladers. In any case the wife of the one whose children go to Pennsylvania appears to be named Jane.

Children of ROBERT CADWALLADER and JANE JOHN EVAN are:

2. i CADWALLADER EVANS ROBERTS, b. 1673, Penllyn, Wales; d. May 07, 1731, Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA (small pox).

ii. MARGARET ROBERTS. Llanuwchllyn Parish Records. Baptisms: Margaret d/o Robert Cadwaladr and Jane -- 27 June 1675

3. iii. MORRIS ROBERTS, b. about 1677 Wales; d. Of North Carolina.

4. iv. JOHN ROBERTS, b. 1681, Penllyn, Wales; d. 1773, Montgomery Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.

 Generation No. 2

2. CADWALLADER ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1673 in Llanuwchllyn (place of baptism on 1 Jun 1673), Wales, and died May 07, 1731 in Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA (small pox). He married ELEANOR HUMPHREY June 09, 1714 in Home of Rowland Ellis, Merion twp, PA, daughter of HUMPHREY ELLIS and JANE DAVID. She was born October 17, 1693, and died 1755.

Historical Collections of Gwynedd by H.M. Jenkins, (1897): "Cadwalader Roberts, eldest son of Robert Cadwalader, b. in Wales, in 1673, immigrated, probably, in 1698, and settled in Gwynedd. In 1710, he bought land, 140 acres, of Robert John, on or closely adjoining the site of the borough of North Wales. All the accounts and traditions describe him as a man highly esteemed for his benevolence. He m. 4th mo. 9, 1714, Eleanor Ellis (b. 8th mo. 17, 1693), dau. of Humphrey and Jane Ellis, of Merion (she is called in the marriage certificate Ellin Humphrey), and he (Cadwalader) d. 3d mo., 7, 1731, of small pox at Gwynedd. His estate was settled by his widow as administratrix, letters being issued to her, dated May 31, 1731. Eleanor m. a second time, Rowland Hugh, of Gwynedd and d. 1755. Burial: May 09, 1731

His name first appears on a marriage certificate 22 Mar 1699 which leads us to believe he came over with brother Morris on the "Robert and Elizabeth" in 1698 with the other early Gwynedd settlers. However there is no record of him owning land until 1710 [see comment by JQ below]. His name is on the subscription paper for building a new meeting house built in 1712 at Gwynedd.

Abstract of the marriage certificate:  Cadwallader Roberts, Gwynedd, yeoman m. Ellen Humphrey, Merion at the dwelling place of Rowland Ellis, 4th mo 9, 1714. Wit: Morris, Nicholas, John, Rowland, Evan, Ellis and Eliza Roberts; John Humphrey and 53 others. His marriage took place in Rowland Ellis' house in Merion, afterwards the house of Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress."

JQ: Cadwallader Roberts may have bought land from Robert Evans near the Meeting House before 1707 as can be seen by the deed of land from Robert Evans to John Davies in 1707: DEED POLL: 20 Dec 1706. ROBERT ap EVAN (signed ROBERT EVAN) of Gwynedd, yeoman, to JOHN DIAVIES (also Davis) same place, carpenter. Piece of land adj. said ROBERT ap EVAN, CADWALLADER ROBERTS, OWEN EVAN, CADWALLADER EVAN; cont. 200 acres. 90 pds. PA money. Part of a tract of 1034 acres which the present Commissioners of Wm. Penn granted by patent, 15 Mar 1702/3, to said ROBERT ap EVAN, said land being in Gwynedd. (Patent Book A vol. 2 p. 477) Wits: CADWALLADER EVAN, DAVID LLOYD, RICHARD HEATH. book E 3, vol. 6 p. 121.

ELEANOR HUMPHREY: Her last name is Ellis in H.M. Jenkins' book (1897) as her father is named Humphrey Ellis. Ellin Humphrey is her name on the marriage certificate. After her husband died of small pox, she became administratrix of his estate, letters being issued to her 31 May 1731. Her father, Humphrey Ellis was born in Pencheston, Pembrokeshire, Wales and died in Haverford township, Chester (now Delaware) Co., PA. Her mother was named Jane (perhaps David). Eleanor married a second time, Rowland Hugh, of Gwynedd and died in 1755.

Children of CADWALLADER ROBERTS and ELEANOR HUMPHREY are:

11. i. REBECCA ROBERTS, b. May 14, 1715, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. December 1795.

12. ii. ROBERT ROBERTS, b. December 18, 1719, Gwynedd, Philadelphia, PA; d. Abt. 1760, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA.

3. MORRIS ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1677 in Llanycil, Wales, and probably died in North Carolina. He married ELIZABETH ROBESON April 18, 1718 in Abington Meeting, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. She was of Abington, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

Llangower Parish Records. Baptisms: Morris son of Robert Cadwaladr and Jane -- 9 May 1677

Howard Jenkins (1897): Morris Roberts, son of Robert Cadwalader, b. in Wales, immigrated, probably with his brother Cadwalader, about 1698, settled in Gwynedd (where he was, from the entries in Ellis Roberts' memorandum book, as early as 1704), m. 2d mo. 18, 1718, Elizabeth Robeson of Abington. In 1734, he applied to Gwynedd Monthly meeting for a certificate to revmove to North Carolina, and probably went there. This is a very early date to move to North Carolina, as the Piedmont was not yet settled. Morris Roberts is on the 1734 Philadelphia County tax list for Gwynedd township.

Some excerpts from the Gwynedd MM minutes:

At Our Monthly Meeting held at Gwynedd the 25th 1st mo 1718: 3rd, Application made in behalf of Morris Robert for a Certificate in Order to proceed in Marriage with Elizabeth Robeson on belonging to Abington Monthly Meeting who requesting it might be prepared and signed by the Appointment of this Meeting: Giving his reasons viz that two Monthly Meetings fall out at Abington before our Next, this Meeting after Consideration condescends, and Appoints Evan Evans and Hugh Foulk to make Necessary Inquiry and write one - the Same to be signed by the order of this Meeting by Owen Evans, Cadwalader Evans, Robert Jones, John Humphrey, Abram Dawes and Meredith David and the Friends Appointed to Draw the Same.

Women's minutes (28, 3mo. 1734): "the case of Morris Robert and his wife acquainted frds here of his inclination of removeing himself wife and familie to Carolina - this Meeting thinks proper to appoint Ann Robert and Alce Griffith further to consult their case together with the men frds." Considering that the children are found in the Gwynedd area after this date, they may not have made this move.

Note: If Morris Roberts ever owned land in Gwynedd, I have not seen any evidence of it. (JQ) This is likely a cause of him wanting to remove to Carolina and the removal of most of his children to Oley and elsewhere. Of the first (1698) settlers Morris and his brother Cadwallader are unusual in not owning land in the 1702 resurvey and must have improved and worked on the land of others. Morris Robert(s) signs the following marriage certificates: David Jones, Gwynedd m. Lowry Robert, of same, at Gwynedd m.h. 9th mo. 24, 1704; John Roberts of Oxford, Philadelphia Co. and Elizabeth Edward of Meirion, 7,6 mo.,1706; Thomas Edward s/o Alexander of Montgomery, dec'd m. Mary Price, Gwynedd, spinster, at Gwynedd mh 7th mo 23, 1715; Nicholas Roberts "son of Robert Cadwalader late of Gwynedd in the County of Philadelphia and the Province of Pennsylvania Deceased" m. Margaret Foulke d/o Edward, yeoman at Gwynedd mh 3rd mo 23, 1717; Daniel Morgan s/o Edward "adjacent of Gwynedd", yeoman m. Elizabeth Roberts, d/o Robert Cadwallader "late of Gwynedd aforesaid", at Gwynedd mh 9th mo 21, 1718. Morris always signs after Cadwallader and before Nicholas and John.

Children of MORRIS ROBERTS and ELIZABETH ROBESON are:

8. i. SUSANNA ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1718, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. December 15, 1789.

ii. MORRIS ROBERTS, d. (he died young).

iii. NEHEMIAH ROBERTS, d. July 1802, at "Squire" Job Robert's place, Whitpain twp., Montgomery Co., PA.

9. iv. LYDIA ROBERTS, b. Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery Co., PA); d. April 04, 1787, Pikeland, Uwchlan twp., Chester Co., PA.

v. HANNAH ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1727, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; m. WILLIAM HOWE, Abt. 1746; b. Abt. 1725. Howard Jenkins: After marriage they "moved to the back country". Gwynedd MM women's minutes: 29 day of the 7 mo 1747, "Ann Ambler and Mary Evans are appointed to speak with Hannah How concerning her outgoing in marriage contrary to our discipline." 8 mo 1747: "The frds appointed to treat with Hannah How respecting her going out in marriage signifies she is easy to what she has done and leaves frds to their Liberty to deal with her as they think fit."

10. vi. SOPHIA ROBERTS, b. Abt. 1730, of Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia Co., PA; d. of Oley twp., Berks Co., PA.

4. JOHN ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1681 (Christening: September 11, 1681, Llanycil, Wales), and died 1772 in Montgomery Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. He married ELIZABETH JONES August 07, 1706 in Merion twp., Philadelphia Co., PA, daughter of JOHN ap EDWARD. She was born Abt. 1684 in Wales, and died August 12, 1745 in Montgomery twp., Montgomery Co., PA.

Llanycil PR. Baptisms: (apparently there is an earlier John who dies in infancy) John s/o Robert Cadwaladr and Jane -- ? January 1678; John s/o Robert Cadwaladr of Penybryn Isa -- 11 September 1681

Clarence Roberts (1940): John Roberts, son of Cadwalader; b. abt 1677 in Wales, d. 1772 in Montgomery township, Philadelphia Co., PA; m. 6-7-1706 (presumably at Merion MH) Elizabeth Edward dau. of William Edward of Merion. John Roberts emigrated with his parents from Wales. He settled at first in Oxford township, Philadelphia county, where he was living at the time of his marriage; but in 1711, he was living in Montgomery twp., when he signed a petition for the legal settling of the route of a road to the mills on the Pennypack.

Howard Jenkins (1897): John Roberts, of Montgomery, son of Robert Cadwalader, b. abt 1677, d. 1773, immigrated, from Wales, with his parents. He settled first in Oxford twp., Philadelphia, and while there m. 6th mo. 7, 1706, Elizabeth Edward, of Merion. He subsequently removed to Montgomery, and his name is attached in 1711, to a petition of Gwynedd and Montgomery residents for the legal settling of the route of a road to the mills on Pennypack. His will, dated 5th mo. 15, 1763, was proved Sept 30, 1773.

About the Marriage Certificate (Haverford, now Radnor MM records):

The related men sign directly below the bride and groom: Caddr Roberts, Morris Roberts, Nicolas Roberts, Ellis Lewis, Wm Edward, Evan Robert, John Robert, Ellis Robert, Wm Robert, David Jones, Edwd William, Rowland Roberts, David Hugh, John Roberts, Evan Griffith, David Gethin, Owen Morris, Richd Jones

The related women sign the column to the left of the one above: Jane Lewis, Jane Roberts, Jane Evan, Jane Jones, Anne Jones, Ellin Jones, Anne Lewis, Grace ffoulke, Jane Roberts, Sarah William, Esther Roberts, Jane Evan, Cath Evan, Gainor Roberts, Jane Roberts, Eliza: Hugh, Eliza: Jones, Mary Jones, Jane Jones, Mary Morris, Anne Thomas, Eliza: Thomas

The John, Ellis and Wm Robert (no s at the end) are probably brothers and not necessarily related to John Roberts. Evan Robert is thought to be from yet another family (he is a 1698 settler of Gwynedd and the son of Robert Ellis -- the Ellis Robert could be his brother instead of the the brother of John and Wm). His sisters are supposed to be named Margaret and Elizabeth, but no one of those names signs. Instead we have Jane Lewis (a sister married to Ellis Lewis perhaps?), two more Jane Roberts and an Esther and a Gainor Roberts. There is no Robert Cadwalader or Jane Cadwalader. After 1715 (later than this marriage) Welsh women at Gwynedd always use their husband's last name as far as I am aware.

I know of no document in Pennsylvania containing Robert Cadwalader's name. His coming over with a wife seems in Jenkins' book to be family tradition. If he came to Pennsylvania, it appears he returned to Wales.

As will be noticed from the dates of his birth and death, John lived to be over ninety years of age.

Charles Henry Browning (Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania) makes Elizabeth Jones (or Edwards) the daughter of John ap Edward (brother of William ap Edward):

"Elizabeth Jones, first child, born 18 12mo 1671. She marrued after 22 May 1699, John ap Robert ap Cadwalader, or John Roberts of the Gwynedd settlement. They were the founders of the Roberts family of Woodlawn plantation in Whitpain township, Montgomery county, Pensylvania." Browning has a great deal to say about her father, John ap Edward. John ap Edward came to Merion, Pennsylvania in 1683 and was a member of the Free Traders of Pennsylvania, and a fairly wealthy, educated man. He died about a year after his arrival, leaving his minor son Edward Jones his heir.

Browning is undoubtedly correct about her parentage, in that William ap Edward (who Thomas Allen Glenn thought was Elizabeth's father in Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania) left a will making clear that his daughter Elizabeth Williams married Thomas Lloyd. The father of William ap Edward and John ap Edward was Edward ap John of Cynlas, near Bala, Merionethshire, Wales. The kinship between Elizabeth and William ap Edward is established by his signing her marriage certificate immediately after John Robert's brothers.

Children of JOHN ROBERTS and ELIZABETH JONES (alias EDWARDS) are:

i. JANE ROBERTS. Notes for JANE ROBERTS: Mentioned by Howard Jenkins. No record could be found by Clarence Roberts.

13. ii. ELIZABETH ROBERTS, b. August 15, 1707, Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., Pennsylvania.

5. ROWLAND ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born 1685 in Bala, Merionethshire, Wales, and died September 22, 1749 in Montgomery twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married (1) MARY PUGH May 01, 1713 in Gwynedd, PA, daughter of ROBERT HUGH and SARAH EVAN. He immigrated from Wales about 1700. He was a minister amongst Friends and visited Wales as a preacher. He established a tavern in Montgomery twp. His will is dated 12 Jul 1749 and was probated Oct 1749. He leaves to daughter in law Hannah Jones two small plots of land with the stipulation that she does not set up a competing tavern. He also mentions daughter in law Mary Davis, and son in law James Williams. His son Eldad was appointed executor. His tavern was located on the east corner of Bethlehem Pike and Upper State Rd. (now a gas station, diagonally across from the Mall). A competing tavern, owned by the Bartholomew family stood across Upper State Rd. where Kinkos now is. The first school in Montgomery twp. was on land donated by Rowland Roberts in 1727. He also owned the land across Bethlehem Pike where the Methodist Church used to be.

Abington MM: Henry Bennet reported married to Anne Williams 1708-8-25

Abington MM: Henry Bennet d. buried at Abington 1714-8-36

Ann was a Quaker minister who traveled with her husband Rowland Roberts to other Meetings including back to Wales. She was Ann Bennet, widow when she married him from Abington meeting, PA.

After her marriage to Rowland Roberts, she joined Gwynedd Meeting:

Att our monthly meeting held att Gwynedd the 29 of 1th mo 1720 Ann Robert produced a certificate from Abington monthly meeting directed to this meeting was read well received ordered to be recorded

Howard Jenkins, p 91: "Ann Roberts, who died on the 9th of 4th month (Nov 4), 1750 (She was seventy-three at her death.), was a native of Wales and had been a minister for fifty years. She was a widow, Ann Bennett of Abington, when she married Rowland Roberts, and removed to Gwynedd. "

from The Friend (Philadelphia) Vol 31, p. 101-102 (1850)

We cannot better begin our account of this Friend than by introducing the opening of the memorial of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, concerning her: --

"Although it is beyond a doubt, that he who putteth off his armour, after a faithful discharge of the part assigned him , i sin a far more secure and happy state than he who girdeth it on; yet it must sensibly affect the thoughtful spectator to see those who have laboured faithfully in the cause of Truth, taken away, while but few are coming on to supply their places. This seems much the case with us at present. Divers worthy Friends, both Ministers and Elders, have of late been removed from us by death, of which blessed number was this dear handmaid of the Lord; -- in a grateful remembrance of whose real worth and manifold services in the church, we are disposed, in the love of Truth, to write the following lines as a memorial: --

She was convinced of the blessed Truth in her native country, Wales, when young, which incurred her father's heavy displeasure; but in time he became reconciled to her. Some years after her convincement, [a little before 1700] she came over into this country, where she received a gift of the ministry, and by a diligent improvement thereof together with the influence of a pious, unspotted life, she was made useful in her generation, and a blessing to many. Her love and compassion for the widow, the fatherless, and those in affliction, appeared by her often visiting them. She was one of the wise in heart, who not only could see, but foresee, the enemy in his approaches, and would rouse and excite his fellow-soldiers to use their utmost endeavours to repel his attempts, which was often done with desirable success. She was zealously concerned for maintaining Christian discipline, -- a steady pillar in the church, so established as not to be shaken or drawn from her uprightness by any cause."

Upon her removal to America, she appears to have settled within the limits of Abington Monthly Meeting, where as Ann Bennett we find her for years valuable as a minister, and active and helpful in the discipline of the church.

In the Eleventh Month, 1719, she was married to Rowland Roberts, of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, a Friend of good standing and esteem amongst Friends, and afterwards her fellow helper in the ministry. The Friends of Gwynedd, whither she now removed with her husband, were at that time much in the practice of manifesting their religious concern towards their members, by appointing committees to visit them in their families. Into this labour Ann was soon introduced. Of her service therein, her memorial says:--

"She had an excellent talent for the weighty service of visiting Friends' families, and at those opportunities was frequently favoured with something suitable to every state and condition, which was attended with happy effects, especailly on the youth. Buth such indeed was the Divine savour, which usually accompanied her discourse and conversation, one could rarely be an hour with her without sensible edification." Her memorial continues:--

"Her first coming to reside here [Gwynedd] was very seasonable, as we had very few public Friends amongst us. There seemed an extensive field before her, in which she laboured fervently; tenderly inviting those who stood afar off to draw nigh -- querying with them whether they knew what the Lord had for them to do? It is evident that her labours in the service of the Gospel were blessed, for about that time our meeting was favoured with heavenly visitations, and many had their mouths oened to speak of God's goodness to their souls. Thereby was verified what she had declared at our meeting, before she came and dwelt among us, though it seemed improbable, when spoken, and many doubted the accomplishment of it. To the babes in the ministry, she, who had a large share of experience in the work, was not wanting to administer suitable precaution and advice.

Although her labour was large in the meeting she belonged to, and in those in the neighbourhood, yet she was not released thereby from more distant service. Early in the year 1723 she was liberated by her Friends at home to pay a religious visit to the southern provinces in company with her dear friend Susanna Morris. They attended the Quarterly Meeting, held in Philadelphia, Third mo. 4th, and soon after proceeded on their visit, being on horseback. They attended the Yearly Meeting for Maryland, held at West River from the 1st to the 5th of Fourth month, wherein their service was great and acceptable.

After this meeting, they appear to have proceeded down the eastern shore, and took passage on a pretty large boat to cross the Chesapeake, having their horses with them, intending, after reaching the western side of the Bay, to proceed to Carolina. A storm coming on, they were driven far out to sea, and on returning towards the shore, were in great danger of being wrecked, being driven over a sand bank. The sea broke so over the vessel, the hatches of which had been left behind, that their food was soaked in the salt water and spoiled, and their horses were also without food. A grassy island being near, where the boat lay, the master put the horses into the sea, expecting they would go to it and feed, but they took another course, and although injured during the storm, were soon seen to reach a sandy beach. It was the third day before the human passengers were able to reach the shore. Then, a boat having come to their rescue, landed them at the very place whither their horses, providentially directed, had gone. The two exhausted women had six miles to walk to the nearest dwelling. But the Lord took care of them, and the woman of the house, a widow, received them with a salutation of love, and treated them with great kindness and hospitality. Their horses were found three days afterwards near by, and they could but see the hand of their gracious and merciful Father in Heaven, in keeping the animals for so many days in that place, where they were much persecuted by musquitoes, when the way was entirely open for them to wander far inland.

Many other hardships they had to endure, and when they left this desolate place to go towards Perquimans in Carolina, they had no guide but their Father in heaven. But he supported them in the prospect, and in the language of Susanna Morris, "forever blessed be his most holy Name and power, our hearts were filled with thankfulness and cheerfulness to set forward. We had a prosperous journey, and got well there."

Susanna's horse eventually died of the injuries he received in the storm, but Ann's carried her safely home to her family."

Ann Roberts ministry is noted in the Gwynedd MM minutes. For instance, 26th of 10th mo 1723, "5thly Our friend Anne Roberts haveing been to visit friends att North Carolina and produced two Certificates of her service one from North Carolina and one from Virginia which was read and well received." She was also active, when home, in visiting Friends, overseeing marriages and other public activities of Friends.

In Daughters of the Light: Quaker Women Preaching and Prophesying in the Colonies and Abroad 1700-1715 by Rebecca Larson, Ann Roberts is mentioned in several places including this story on page 144: "Only a few months after Ann Roberts had sailed for England on a religious visit with Mary Pennell, in July 1732, her husband, also a preacher, presented his own 'concern' to journey to the same country. The Quaker meeting, however, fearing that affection for his wife was prompting the visit, postponed Rowland Roberts's case for months until they were convinced of the spiritual authenticity of his undertaking." Later on page 190 is a picture of an entire letter in her hand in 1739 written to John Kinsey, the Speaker of the Pennsylvania Assembly which reads (the lack of punctuation was typical of the period, and the italics are the invention of the editor of this web page):

"Montgomery 13th of 6 mo 1739

John Kinsey

Esteemed friend I have been little concerned in my mind lest I should be the occasion of unnecessary trouble but it is the growth and prosperity of truth I have in vein being sensible as the promise is the willing and the obedient shall eat the goods of the land and also have had experience of the fruits of disobedience and the subtill workings of satan to look to deprive us of the reward of obedience which reward no tongue can set forth to the utmost and that no Dalilah may hinder any from coming to the receiving of it in themselves[.] I have often thought such as have been particularly visited by the Divine being whether or no there is not particular service required from such more than others a close examination ought to be whether there is a coming up to answer the end, I believe there is desire at time begotten in the heart to do the master's will but the old serpent that envied our first parents still continues in the same to us endeavouring to bring in unbelief and impossibilities raising mountains in the way but such as comes to relie upon that hand and arm that made way and work deliverance for his people in all ages is the same still for all power in heaven and in earth is given to the Son and such as follows him faithfully and truly shall have the victory, so dear friend what I have in desire is that there may be a coming up in faithfulnes to what is made manifest and then there will be the answer of peace in the end[.] so my dear friend I hope thee will excuse my poor way of writing as well as my freedom in writing

So I conclude & remain thy friend and well wisher Ann Roberts"

Larson adds that the Assembly was considering military funding from Pennsylvania and this letter was a gentle reminder of Friends' peace testimony which Kinsey, it turns out, was also a supporter of, and which was defeated.

[Phila. Will Book "I", p.277.]--Roberts p. 16

In his book, Clarence Roberts notes several times the use of the term "son-in-law" to mean step-son as well as son-in-law. This happens above when Anne Roberts refers to Eldad Roberts, the son of Rowland Roberts and therefore her step-son, as her son-in-law.

Her children are mentioned below in the wills of her "sister" Eleanor (William) Roberts who married John Roberts (of a different Roberts line, not this one)

ROBERTS, ELEANOR. Gwynedd, Philadelphia County. Widow. September 2, 1725. November 16, 1725. D. 436. Sister Anne Roberts, cousin Katherine Roberts, brother Ellis Roberts. Nephews: William, Daniel and James Williams (their mother's name is not given and she is not a legatee). Sarah Pugh; Mary and Hannah Bennet. The wife of Humphrey Parker (name not given). Executors: Rowland Roberts and nephew Daniel Williams. Overseers: Evan Evans and John Jones. Witnesses: Thomas Wiet and Francis Griffith.

It is not clear if Eleanor is a sister of Anne's or of her first husband James Williams as her last name is William when she marries John Roberts in the Abington MM records.  She mentions the children of Henry Bennett as well as those of James Williams. Clarence Roberts assumes she is James Williams' sister.

Children of ROWLAND ROBERTS and MARY PUGH are:

16. ii. ELDAD ROBERTS, b. February 19, 1713/14, Gwynedd, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. 1789, Montgomery twp., Montgomery Co., PA.

iii. SARAH ROBERTS, b. January 13, 1715/16. Apparently she died young as she is not mentioned in her father's will.

Some internet genealogies also have another daughter, Priscilla, who married James Williams (son of Rowland Roberts' second wife Ann, thus son in law). This appears to be incorrect as James seems to have married Priscilla REES on 5th month, 29, 1726 at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia. Priscilla and James Williams' genealogy is continued HERE, HERE and HERE.

6. NICHOLAS ROBERTS (ROBERT CADWALADER) was born Abt. 1688 in Penllyn, Wales, and died 1733 in Gwynedd Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. Mentioned in her father's will to receive an annuity of 2 pounds, 10 shillings, but this is to cease if the place she formerly lived in comes to her possession again. Her husband John Jones received 100 acres of land in Montgomery in her father's will and her children are also mentioned.

I can find no mention of this marriage in the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting records so far. It is likely this is one of the John Jones who was disowned by Gwynedd Meeting.

In the 1734 Philadelphia Co. tax list there are two possibilities for this John Jones in Gwynedd township, John Jones, penman [this is the son of William John, LINE 2] and John Jones, weaver. There are no John Jones listed in Montgomery, Worcester or Whitpain townships that could be him on the 1734 tax list (John Jones, carpenter, in Montgomery is the man in LINE 3 who married Jane Edward).

15. PRISCILLA REES (not Roberts) was born Abt. 1710 in Pennsylvania. She married JAMES WILLIAMS 5th month (July) 29, 1726 at the First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of JAMES WILLIAMS and ANN LEWIS. He was born 1705 in Philadelphia Co., PA, and died Aft. 1781 in Pennsylvania.

Juli Morgan has published a sourced Worldconnect database that includes this line. She does not have Priscilla's parents as known and Priscilla does not appear in the Gwynedd birth records (Eldad and Sarah are there). We know her first name was Priscilla as her daughter Priscilla Quee names her in her will. The documents which do name the family of James and Priscila Williams are the will of Anne Roberts (James' mother - see above under Rowland Roberts), the will of Rowland Roberts, which calls James Williams a son in law (which means step son), and especially the will of Daniel Williams (James' brother) who dies childless:

WILLIAMS, DANIEL. Gwynedd Township, Phila., Co. Yeoman. April 25, 1781. July 27, 1781.

I devise 70 pounds to the support of my brother William, to be applied as hereafter directed. To my brother James, 30 pounds, if he be living; if he be dead, to be paid to his widow.
To my sister Mary Davies, 20 pounds.
To my nephew Hezekiah Williams, 20 pounds.
To my nephew Humphrey Williams, 20 pounds.
To my three nieces Martha Horton, Mary Loydd, and Priscilla Quee, 24 pounds, equally divided.
To my three nieces Sarah Davies, Hannah Trump and Priscilla Jarrett, 18 pounds, equally divided. (JQ- Daniel's sister Mary Bennett had married John Davies of Gwynedd)To my nephew David Jones, 10 pounds.
To my niece Ann Jones, 8 pounds.
To my late wife's niece, Sarah Thomas, 30 pounds.
To my late wife's two nieces, Cathrine and Mary Williams, 200 pounds, equally divided.
To the two sons of my nephew Hezekiah Williams, as follows: Dan, 10 pounds; Ezer, 8 pounds.
Execs: My nephew Humphrey Williams and my friend George Maris, who shall sell the plantation where I now dwell (at expiration of the term for which it is leased) containing about 130 acres. My Exec., George Maris shall take care of the distribution of my donation to my brother, William. Should any of this sum remain, it shall be distributed amongst my nephew Humphrey Williams' children. Residue to be equally divided among all legatees mentioned in this will.
Letters, July 27, 1781 to Humphrey Williams and George Maris, Execs.
Wit: Amos Roberts, Alexander Scott. [Testator made mark: D W]

There are no records of James Williams at Gwynedd Meeting as far as the author of this web page could determine. He may have stayed in Abington when his mother married Rowland Roberts. There is a mention on the internet that Priscilla Rees was a member of Haverford Meeting when she married James Williams.

Priscilla or her daughter appear to have had need to travel between Philadelphia and Gwynedd as seen in the Philadelphia MM records:

1760, 6, 27. Priscilla Williams received on certificate from Gwynedd MM, dated 1760, 6, 24.

1764, 6, 29. Priscilla Williams got certificate to Gwynedd MM.

Children of PRISCILLA and JAMES WILLIAMS are:

37. i. MARTHA WILLIAMS, b. 1726, Bucks Co., PA; d. 1808, Tom's Creek, Surry Co., NC.

38. ii. PRISCILLA WILLIAMS, b. Abt. 1740.

39. iii. HEZEKIAH WILLIAMS, b. Abt. 1740, Pennsylvania; d. October 21, 1807, Philadelphia MM, Northern District minutes, PA.

iv. HUMPHREY WILLIAMS.

The common assumption is that Humphrey is the son of James Williams and not his brother William Williams, and I am not sure why this is so. If Humphrey is a son of James, then there are likely at least two Humphrey Williams in the Montgomery township area. If a son of William Williams there may be only one. Here is the relevant documentation that I am aware of. First, a woman named Jane leaves a will in Montgomery twp. naming a son Humphrey Williams:

WILLIAMS, JANE. Montgomery. Phila. Co. Widow. January 16, 1763. April 25, 1769.
Children: William, Jane, John, Humphrey and Mary.
Brother: Humphrey Humphreys.
Exec.: brother in law Humphrey Jones.
Wit: Thos. Bate. Cunrod Starn and Evan Jones. O.365.

Jane is the daughter of John Humphrey of Horsham, who left a will there that was proved April 07, 1733 in Philadelphia County.

Next, a Humphrey Williams is found in the Philadelphia and Gwynedd MM (Quaker) records:

Gwynedd MM: p. 323- book 2, 1761-10-27, Humphrey Williams and wife married contrary to discipline and offered an account.
Gwynedd MM: 1764-5-29, Humphrey Williams and wife got cert to Phila MM. (Records of Gwynedd at Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College)
Philadelphia MM: 1764. Humphrey Williams and wife Ann received on certificate from Gwynedd dated 1764, 4, 29. (Hinshaw, Vol. II)

And finally a Humphrey Williams leaves a will in the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia:

WILLIAMS, HUMPHREY. N. Liberties. City of Phila. Mason. May 6, 1786. July 3, 1786. T.344.
Wife: Rebecca.
Children: Tacy Thomas, Luke, Ann, Absalom.
Exec: Rebecca
Williams, Son-in-Law Benjamin Thomas.
Wit: Titus Matlack, Jacob Ashmeade.

Howard Jenkins (1897): 'Squire John Roberts was doubtless the most important merchant in Gwynedd, for many years. His store was at the Spring-House, a particularly good place for business in the old times. He began there soon after the close of the Revolution, some of his accounts that I have seen being of so early a date as 1786. His papers show that he dealt largely in flaxseed and linen, buying the former of the farmers and exporting it, from Philadelphia, to the Irish ports, --Belfast, Dublin, Newry, and Cork. In return he received the linens. His operations were sometimes directly with the Irish commission houses, but more frequently he conducted them through Caleb and Owen Foulke, of Philadelphia. The shipments each way were quite large: whether they were ultimately at a profit to John may be doubted. Months were required for returns, each way, and the various charges for insurance, freight, storage, commissions, etc., were about 30 per cent of the prices realized on the flaxseed. John closed his business at the Spring-House in 1794, by selling out to John Hubbs, for whom his brother-in-law, Amos Lewis, of Upper Dublin, became security. John Hubbs did not prove to be a successful store-keeper, and did not long continue.

'Squire John Roberts (by Howard Jenkins)

'Squire John Roberts, born in 1750, was for many years one of the most conspicuous figures in Montgomery and Gwynedd. I have already mentioned his store-keeping at Spring House. After selling out there he removed to his Montgomery farm, where he permanently remained. He had been appointed a justice of the peace, in 1791, by Governor Mifflin, his commission authorizing him to act for the townships of Hatfield, Montgomery, and Gwynedd, and he continued to act in that capacity until his death, which occurred June 17, 1823. He was a man of very considerable force and energy, a marked character in whatever he undertook. Samuel Aaron, afterwards the distinguished preacher and teacher, was "brought up" by him, and so was Benjamin F. Hancock. "Tom Wolf," afterward Dr. Antrim Foulke's faithful servitor, lived with him. He is remembered by one of the older Friends, now surviving, as coming to Gwynedd Meeting occasionally, in winter time, in his sleigh, a tall man, dressed in gray. He transacted a large amount of business, including the settlement of estates, etc. His executors were Cadwallader Foulke and William Foulke, and a very serious part of their duty was the settlement of his ownership of a tract of 751 acres on Bentley's Creek, Bradford county, near Towanda. 'Squire John had bought it, in 1808, of James Chapman, who held under a Pennsylvania patent, but the lands were occupied by settlers under the Connecticut claim, and the 'Squire was obliged in 1815 to establish his rights by suits of ejectment. It was not until 1830, seven years after his death, that the business was concluded. He was never married; his estate, after some bequests, went to collateral heirs.

Notes for HEZEKIAH WILLIAMS: named in will of grandmother Anne Roberts (m. Rowland Roberts) as a son of James Williams, left 25 lbs to divide between his 5 siblings. In the Gwynedd MM minutes we find: 1756-12 (December) -28. Hezekiah Williams and Rachel Hutchins, reported married, which means the marriage occurred before that date.

The name of the wife and the children are from Historical Collections of Gwynedd by Howard M. Jenkins (1897): "Mordecai Roberts, son of Eldad and Elizabeth, b. 7th mo. 11, 1753, m. ELLEN DECKER. The tradition is that MORDECAI served in the Revolutionary army, probably as a private soldier, and that during the Battle of Germantown, in which he was engaged, his father, then an old man, lay on his bed at Montgomery, listening to the cannonade (which could be heard at that distance), in great distress of mind about "Mord." The monthly-meeting records have an entry in the 11th mo., 1776, that MORDECAI ROBERTS "has joined the military men in their exercise, and wholly neglects the attendance of meetings." After carrying the matter forward for some months, in the 6th mo., 1777 (four months before Germantown), the meeting disowned him."

She married ISAIAH MULLEN 1788 in Montgomery Co., PA. He was born Abt. 1760 in probably Horsham twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA

Gwynedd MM minutes, 1788-2-26. Elizabeth Mullen (late Roberts) married out of unity, offered an account. (Isaiah Mullen not a Quaker)

Gwynedd MM minutes, 1788-5-27. Elizabeth Mullen (wife of Isaiah) granted certificate to New Garden MM (Pennsylvania).

Isaiah Mullen bought land of Ephraim Gillmore in New London twp., Chester Co., PA in 1790 by deed (Chester Co. Deed book E-2, page 542)

Isaiah Mullen is on the 1799 New London twp., Chester Co., PA tax list. A John Mullen is found in the same township who cannot be the son of Isaiah and Elizabeth who were married in 1788 (thus he could be no older than 10 or 11 if their son).

Isaiah Mullen filed a will in New London twp., Chester Co., PA which was probated in 1831.

Isaiah Mullen appears to be the son of Charles Mullen of Horsham who left a will:

Charles and William Mullen appear on the 1776 Horsham tax list (Charles 100 acres) and Israel is on the list as a single man. Isaiah and Israel are in Capt. Hines' company in Montgomery township in 1785. We assume brother William (will, Horsham twp., 1816) married Agnes Shoemaker (father Richard Shoemaker, will Horsham proved 1790) and this William is the father of the William who married Edith Lukens, daughter of David Lukens and Sarah Lloyd. Sister Dedemiah Mullen (dau. of Charles) married Jonathan Gilbert who left a will 1809 in Cheltenham. A deed from 1759 from Charles Mullen to Stephen Brown in Upper Dublin twp. shows that Charles' had a first wife named Amy who is probably the mother of his children.

Notes for JOSEPH FOULKE:

from "Fair Land Gwynedd" by Phil Johnson Ruth (1991):

Recollection of Gwynedd Schools in the Late 1700's from Quaker minister and educator Joseph Foulke (1786-1863):

"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There wa no house for the purpose, but what was called 'the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament: we had Dilworth's Spelling Book and Dilworth's Assistant or Arithmetic. Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was, however, a small part of the spelling-book called 'A New Guide to the English Tongue', and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar.

My next schooling was in 1795, in the house late the property of William Buzby, on the Bethlehem Road, above the Spring-House. It was a kind of family school, taught by Hannah Lukens. I next went to Joshua Foulke, my father's elder brother, and an old man. He taught in the log schoolhouse, near the eighteen-mile stone on the Bethlehem road. My father, with the help of his neighbors, built this house [about 1798], on a lot set apart for this purpose, at the southern extremity of his premises. This log school-house stood about thirty years, and besides Joshua Foulke, we had for teachers William Coggins, Hannah Foulke, Benjamin Albertson, Hugh Foulke (my brother), John Chamberlain, Christian Dull (Jr.), Daniel Price, and Samual Jones (I have probably not named all, or given them in the order in which they came).

The Free School of Montgomery, however, was more popular. The salary there, $160 a year, secured more competent teachers than other schools in the neighborhood. I can remember when the teacher's pay was from a dollar to ten shilings per quarter for each scholar, and he obtained his board by going about from house to house among his employers, and it was a remark that people would trust a teacher to instruct their children to whom they would not lend a horse!"

Howard Jenkins:

Joseph Foulke

Amongst the community of the Friends, at Gwynedd, the most conspicuous figure, for many years, was Joseph Foulke. He was born there, May 22, 1786. In 1817, he appeared as a minister, and was admitted a member of the meeting of ministers and elders in 1821, after which he continued in the ministry to the end of his life, more than forty years. He made numerous visits to distant meetings, including those in New Jersey, New York, Canada, Maryland, Ohio, and Indiana. He had learned the trade of a wheelwright (which was also originally the trade of his father), and had expected to pursue it as an occupation, but his inclinations turned to teaching, and in 1811 he took charge of Friends' School at Plymouth, where he continued for six years; and then, after teaching one year at Upper Dublin, he established in the autumn of 1818, a boarding school for young men and boys, at Gwynedd, on part of his father's estate. This school he conducted for many years with marked success, and it was continued later, until about 1860, in the charge of his sons Daniel and Joseph, and his nephew, Hugh Foulke Jr. Joseph published (Philadelphia : 1844) a memoir of Jacob Ritter (a preacher among Friends, who had been a Revolutionary soldier: see in Watson's Annals details of his confinement in the British prison in Philadelphia). He also conducted for many years the publication of the "Friends' Almanac", furnishing for it the astronomical calculations. In 1836 he visited Washington as one of a committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to influence Congress against the admission of Arkansas as a slave state. (See Curtis's Life of James Buchanon, Vol. I, p. 337; Vol II, p. 181.) His MS. Journal, giving many interesting details of his life, has been repeatedly drawn upon for this work

Notes for DANIEL HORTON: From Janet Hunter / Horton Genforum # 3163

I thought I would share with you this obituary I found in DAR application supporting files for Daniel Horton, Sr., who died August 18, 1839 in McMinn Co. TN. Daniel was the son of Abraham HORTON. b. 1722, and Martha WILLIAMS. Daniel Horton, Sr.'s wife was Arminta MULLINS. I descend through his son Isaac Horton, who lived in Washington Co TN near his father, and probably uncle Jesse MULLINS, and wife Margaret MARTIN. When Daniel Sr., moved to McMinn Co about 1833, Isaac moved his family to Greene Co TN. Of course, they could have moved just a couple of miles, since they lived right on the border.

Obituary of Daniel Horton Sr., 1839 McMinn Co TN, Daniel Horton, Sr.

ANOTHER HERO of the REVOLUTION GONE

(From the Hiwassee Patriot, 8-29-1839)

"Died at the residence of Daniel, Jr. in this county, on the 18th inst., Mr. Daniel Horton, Sr. in the 87th year of his age. Mr. Horton was a native of Pennsylvania, and after undergoing the fatigues and privations consequent on several campaigns in the war that secured to us our liberty, he moved to Washington Co., Tenn. where he remained until the last five years, after which he came to this county to terminate a life spent in honesty and usefulness among his children. He died in full assurance of a blessed immortality."

This was a typed copy and reads "obtained from Miss Emma Sue Williams, Athens Hist. Society, Athens, Tenn."

90. JAMES HORTON (MARTHA4 WILLIAMS, PRISCILLA3 ROBERTS, ROWLAND2, ROBERT1 CADWALADER) was born March 27, 1755 in Bucks Co., PA, and died February 1782 in Burned at stake by the Shawnee near Chillicothe, OH. He married MARGARET BEALS January 17, 1778 in Tom's Creek, Surry Co., NC, daughter of THOMAS BEALS and SUSAN ANTRIM. She was born 1757 in New Garden, Guilford Co., NC.

Notes for JAMES HORTON: James was captured by the Shawnee while hunting in Blue Stone, Giles Co., VA and taken to Ohio where the Indians put him to death. He was the son in law of Thomas Beals, a Quaker minister who was known for his peace efforts with the Shawnee during the Revolution, having traveled to the Ohio country in 1775. Thomas Beals later led one of the first groups of Quakers into the Ohio Territory in 1799.

Juli Morgan (Worldconnect) has extracted this from "HORTON HISTORY, The Family of Kerenhappuch Horton, wife of John Bolt II" From Bolt American by Nina Leona Bolt Martin

"When Thomas Beals organized an emigrant party in the spring of 1781 to build a settlement on the Bluestone River in the present Giles County, Virginia, James and Margaret with, their two children, Rachel and Jacob, went with the group of some twenty or thirty families. The settlement did not prosper and in the main part soon broke up though James Horton and his family stayed with Thomas Beals and his family and with others.

That first winter, in late February of 1782, James Horton with six of the men settlers went on a hunting trip some distance from the Bluestone settlement toward Ohio. Shooting was good and they killed a large quantity of bear, deer, and other game. This was accomplished afoot, so ;they cached the game and werily went for their horses.

During their absence from the ame, Indians discovered the cache. After some deliveration, they left it as it was and being hostile they set up an ambush awaiting the return of the settlers. As the seven men came within range, five of them were shot dead. James Horton and John Branson temporarily escaped by running. James Horton, though but twenty- six years of age, suffered from rheumatism and did not go far until he hid in some thick underbrush. As Branson came by James riased his gun to shoot an old Indian Chief following Branson. At the same time James called to Branson: “You are not going to leave me are you?? Branson answered “No? and stopped. But the gun of James missed fire and the old chief took them both prisoners.

After joining the Indian group, James and Branson were not allowed to see each other. James was taken immediately to old Chillicothe in the Northwestern Territory and to an Indian camp on Paint Creek, near the presen Frankfort, Ohio. After undergoing all the torments peculiar to savage ingenuity, James Horton was finally burned at the stake.

Margaret Beals Horton with her two children returned from Bluestone to Westfield, North Carolina, and that following November 13th, 1782, gave birth to the third child and named him James in honor of his deceased father. With a hundred acres of land on the Pinch Gut Creek and with the blacksmith shop left by James, she eked out a living for her family. She continued running the blacksmith shop. Her son, Jacob, at an early age, learned of the responsibilities of mankind and the necessity for work and thrift in survival. It was a caring family, all sharing in the necessary effort."
