She was born in Wales, and died 1698 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married (2) CATHERINE GRIFFITH (Widow of Alexander Edwards) May 12, 1714 in Gwynedd MH, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

2. ANN² WILLIAMS (JOHN¹) was born January 08, 1693/94 in Merion Township, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania, and died September 10, 1773 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. She married HUGH FOULKE April 04, 1713 in Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, Gwynedd Meeting House, Pennsylvania, son of EDWARD FOULKE and ELEANOR HUGH. He was born July 06, 1685 in Coed-y-Foel, Merionethshire, Wales, England, and died May 21, 1760 in Richland MM, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

3. WILLIAM WILLIAMS(JOHN¹) was born 1689 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 26 October 1766. He married MARGARET RICHARD (widow of John Longworthy) 10 August 1715 in Radnor MM, Chester (now Delaware), Pennsylvania. She was born about 1694 and is the daughter of Rowland Richard and Catharine Jones of Tredyffrin twp., Chester Co., PA.

9. ELEANOR³ FOULKE (ANN² WILLIAMS, JOHN¹) was born March 19, 1719/20 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died in Pennsylvania. She married (1) ISAAC LESTER. She married (2) JOHN LLOYD October 21, 1742 in Richland Meeting House, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. He was born in Horsham, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, and died 1760.

10. JOHN³ FOULKE (ANN² WILLIAMS, JOHN¹) was born February 21, 1722/23 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died May 25, 1787 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. She married (2) WILLIAM THOMAS October 09, 1760, son of SAMUEL THOMAS and MARGARET MORGAN. 15. JANE³ FOULKE (ANN² WILLIAMS, JOHN¹) was born March 03, 1733/34 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died August 01, 1771 in Abington, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. She married JOHN GREASLEY November 17, 1756 in Richland Meeting House, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.

16. WILLIAM WILLIAMS (WILLIAM, JOHN) was born April 28, 1721 in Pennsylvania, and died July 27, 1801. He married CATHERINE MORGAN September 1748 in Gwynedd MM PA (not in Jenkin's book), daughter of WILLIAM MORGAN and ELIZABETH ROBERTS. She was born March 23, 1723/24 in Of Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

It is possible that John and Richard are the son of a man with the first name William instead of the last name Williams.

6. OWEN⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born February 20, 1743/44 in Loudoun Co., VA, and died April 30, 1810 in Guilford Co., NC. He married (1) KATHERINE CRAWFORD March 15, 1770 in Cane Creek, NC. She was born 1744. He married (2) SARAH WILLITS November 06, 1799 in Deep River, NC. She was born May 10, 1769 in Stokes Co., NC.

7. ELIZABETH⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born December 25, 1750 in Fairfax, Loudoun Co., VA, and died in Wilmington, Clinton Co., OH. She married NATHAN PIKE November 08, 1769 in Cane Creek MM, Orange Co., NC, son of JOHN PIKE and ABIGAIL OVERMAN. He was born December 12, 1749 in Cane Creek, Orange Co., NC, and died April 14, 1791 in Deep River, Guilford Co., NC.

8. RACHEL⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born March 20, 1753 in Loudoun Co., VA, and died 1840 in Chatham Co., NC. She married JOSHUA CHAMNESS December 06, 1777 in Loudoun Co., VA, son of ANTHONY CHAMNESS and SARAH COLE. He was born April 05, 1761 in Orange Co., NC.

9. MARGARET⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born April 01, 1755 in Fairfax, Loudoun Co., VA, and died Bef. 1813 in Sevier Co., TN. She married ALEXANDER CAMPBELL 1772 in Chatham Co., NC, son of CHARLES CAMPBELL and ELEANOR. He was born October 15, 1751 in Fairfax, Loudoun Co., VA, and died 1819 in Sevier Co., TN.

10. DANIEL⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born June 19, 1760 in Fairfax, Loudoun Co., VA. He married SUSANNA KEMP July 12, 1781 in Chatham Co., NC. She was born 1761 in Orange Co., NC.

11. WILLIAM⁴ WILLIAMS (WILLIAM³, RICHARD², UNKNOWN WILLIAM OR¹) was born September 07, 1763 in Cane Creek, Chatham Co., NC, and died August 25, 1824 in White Water MM, Wayne Co., IN. He married RACHEL KEMP March 16, 1786 in Orange Co., NC, daughter of RICHARD KEMP and SUSANNAH PIGGOTT. She was born 1764 in Chatham Co., NC.

1. THOMAS WILLIAMS was born Abt. 1690, and died August 18, 1741. He married (1) CATHERINE THOMAS August 10, 1714 in Philadelphia Co., PA. She died before 14 August, 1720. He married (2) JANE MORRIS October 14, 1720 in Gwynedd MM, Philadelphia now Montgomery Co., PA, daughter of MORRIS RICHARDS. He married (3) SARAH EVANS March 06, 1732/33 in Philadelphia Co., PA, daughter of CADWALADER EVANS and ELLEN MORRIS. She was born Abt. 1690 in Denbighshire, Wales, and died in Of Berks Co., PA.

At one time speculatively placed as a son of John Williams of Montgomery, but from the wills of John and Catherine Williams, this does not seem to be the case.

Montgomery township was originally purchased from William Penn by Thomas Fairman (a land speculator, probably, who lived in Philadelphia). A Thomas Williams, perhaps this one who later lives in Montgomery, is a witness to his will:

This is likely a different Thomas William, as in 1728 Thomas signs with a mark the will of Evan Evans of Gwynedd.

Thomas William & Jane Morris Declared their intention of marriage the first time Cathrine William & Jane Jones are appointed to inspect into her Clearness and Conversation and bring report thereof next meeting." The follow-up second declaration was made the next month. Cathrine William (nee Griffith) is the wife of John William and Jane Jones (Cathrine's niece) is the wife of John Jones, carpenter, and both of these women live in Montgomery township.

17. MARGARET WILLIAMS (THOMAS) was born April 25, 1721, and died Aft. 1787. She married JOHN HANK Aft. February 1736/37, son of JOHN HANK and SARAH EVANS. He was born September 20, 1712 in Whitemarsh twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died 1780 in Of Rockingham Co., VA.

Notes for JOHN HANK:

H.M. Jenkins (1897): "The precise name of the head of the Hank family who thus removed, is uncertain, but Mr. David Lincoln, of Birdsboro, Berks county, in a letter to me, September 1883, thinks it was John, and says: 'He lived on the Perkiomen turnpike, six miles east of Reading, in Exeter township, and within half a mile of Mordecai Lincoln, great-great-grandfather of the President. This John Hank, with John and Benjamin Lincoln, moved to Fayette county, and from there Mr. Hank went southward.'
As to a removal, first, to Fayette county, I do not know; but as has already been noted (p. 208), John Hank was in Rockingham county, Va., at least as early as 1787, when his daughter Hannah married Asa Lupton. That this John was the one described by Mr. Lincoln is probable, or he may have been a son of the Berks county man, for the latter was in all probablility the same John Hank who was born 1712, the son of the Whitemarsh yeoman and Sarah Evans of Gwynedd."

"Mordecai Lincoln's son John and Joseph's brother, John, became fast friends and both eventually migrated to Augusta county, Virginia (now Rockingham) in the early 1770s. The children of Joseph Hanks, his brother John, and Michael Ludwig all became friends, so it was natural that a marriage would occur among them."
Many of the John Hank m. Margaret Williams line are from Wallace Ewing's Rootsweb Worldconnect database.
Note that John's brother Joseph has been proposed as the grandfather of Nancy Hanks, the mother of President Lincoln. However, documents and DNA evidence so far supports an origin for this line in Richmond County, Virginia, not Berks Co., PA. No Y DNA test has been done on this line yet though.

18. ELLIN WILLIAMS (THOMAS) was born about 1730 and died 12 December 1796. She married October 11, 1764, John Roberts, son of John Robert, the immigrant, and Elizabeth Edwards. John Roberts was born July 28, 1714 in Montgomery township, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania and died December 04, 1804 in Whitpain twp., Montgomery Co., PA. This was John Roberts' second marriage. He had previously married, May 13, 1736, at Gwynedd Meeting, Jane Hank, the daughter of John Hank and Sarah Evans (who second married, Thomas Williams, Ellin's father).

Cadwalader Foulke on recording his death called Ellin's husband, John Roberts Cadwalader.

John Roberts' children by Jane Hank were named Cadwalader, John, Elizabeth, Ruth, Sarah, Ann, Jane, Mary, Job and Jonah. With Ellin Williams he had Ellin (b. February 25, 1768, d. October 01, 1812, m. Richard Shoemaker (1771-1837) and had Charles, Ann, Job, Hannah and John Shoemaker).

John Roberts' land was located on the Penllyn Pike adjacent Morris Road in Whitpain township.

2. ELIZABETH2 WILLIAMS (WILLIAM1) was born May 12, 1746 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died October 20, 1793. She married CAPT. SAMUEL DAVIS June 1772, son of SAMUEL DAVIS and JANE REES. He was born January 01, 1745/46 in Plymouth twp., Philadelphia (Montgomery) Co., PA, and died April 06, 1824.

Notes for CAPT. SAMUEL DAVIS:

February, 1776, Gwynedd MM: Plymouth friends acquaint this Meeting that Samuel Davis Junr Joined others in their military Exercises and that friends have treated with him on that account to whom he signified that he had declined Meeting with them and did not intend to join them anymore. Joseph Jones and Thomas Lancaster are appointed to visit him and also to observe his conduct and report as they find to our next monthly Meeting. They also acquaint this Meeting that Joseph Williams Enlisted himself with the Soldiers. Joseph Roberts and Isaac Ellis are appointed to visit him if they have an Opportunity and report how they find him to our next monthly Meeting. And that Aquilla Roberts has likewise joined them in their military Exercises. John Roberts and George Morris are appointed to visit him on that account and report thereof to our next monthly Meeting

March, 1776: One of the friends appointed to visit Samuel Davies Junr reports that he had an opportunity with him and that he seems to be differently disposed from what he was some time ago; and he joined the Military Men in the exercise again and signified that he did not intend to make friends any satisfaction; notwithstandingly this Meeting continues the said friends & desires them to try to convince him of his misconduct. One of the friends appointed to visit Joseph Williams reports that he accidentally met with him but had very little time to speak with him. Therefore this Meeting continues said friends to endeavour to visit him between this and our next Monthly Meeting. One of the friends appointed to visit Aquilla Roberts reports that he spoke with him and that he said that as he had begun he intended to go through with it but as the other friend has not had an opportunity with him this Meeting continues them both to endeavour to convince him of his misconduct

April 1776: 7th One of the friends appointed to visit Samuel Davies Junr acquaints this Meeting that he and another friend had one accordingly, but that he did not say much nor tell them what he intended to do in future. Therefore this Meeting continues the same friends to visit him and also to inspect his conduct and report thereof to our next monthly Meeting. Plymouth friends acquaint this Meeting that Joseph Williams continues in the Military employment therefore this Meeting appoints Joseph Roberts and Isaac Ellis to draw a Testification against him and produce it to our next Monthly Meeting. The friends appointed to visit Aquilla Roberts report that some friends had opportunity with him and that they did not discover any Tokens of Sorrow for his misconduct. Therefore this Meeting appoints Ezekiel Cleaver and John Roberts to draw a Testification against him and produce it to the next meeting

May 1776: he friends appointed to visit Samuel Davies Junr Report that they did not hear whether he continues his Military or not but has attended some Meetings; this Meeting continues Thomas Lancaster and appoints Joseph Roberts to meet him and report thereof to our next monthly Meeting. The friends appointed to draw a Testification against Joseph Williams have accordingly done which was read and approved of. Isaac Ellis and Jacob Evans are desired to serve him with a Copy and acquaint him of his right to appeal. The friends appointed to draw a Testification against Aquilla Roberts have accordingly done; which was read and approved of. Ezekiel Cleaver and John Roberts are desired to serve him with a Copy and acquaint him of his right to appeal.

August 1776: Disowned by Gwynedd Monthly Meeting "for want of keeping to that peaceable principle of grace in his own heart, hath so far deviated therefrom to be guilty of associating with the Military Men and taking active part with them carrying on War the which conduct of his (as we apprehend) to be consistent with the principal of the Gospel, which breathes peace on Earth and good will toward men, therefore the clearing of Truth and our Religious society from such disorderly conduct, we do disown the said Samuel Davis from being any longer a Member thereof, or to have any right of membership amongst us untill by unfeigned repentance and amendment of life, he renders himself Worthy of the unity of Friends; and that he may is what we desire."

He was a militia Captain during the Revolution.

4. CAPT. EDWARD MORRIS DAVIS (EVAN3, ELIZABETH2 WILLIAMS, WILLIAM1) was born July 21, 1811 in Bucks Co., PA, and died November 26, 1887. He married MARIA MOTT October 26, 1836, daughter of JAMES MOTT and LUCRETIA COFFIN. She was born 1818, and died 1897.

Philadelphia merchant, abolitionist and Hicksite Quaker.

1861 - received a commssion as Captain in the Union forces and joined General John Fremont in the west. He is disowned by Cherry St. Meeting for fighting in the war.

This section will briefly cover the descendants of her first husband (married, Haverford, now Radnor MM records, 1699), James Williams of Cheltenham who is said to have been born in the Parish of Kily Combe, Caermarthenshire, Wales, and died in 1707 in Cheltenham twp (Thomas Allen Glenn, Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania, Vol. 1, p. 218). After her second husband, Henry Bennett of Abington also died, she married Rowland Roberts of Montgomery township and became a minister at Gwynedd Friends meeting.

Anne's children by James Williams are:

Sarah Meredith's mother was Ellen Pugh, a daughter of Ellis Pugh (the Quaker minister and friend of Rowland Ellis) and Sinah.

There is a Daniel Williams on the 1734 Towamencin township list (not sure this is him). There is a Daniel Williams on the 1781 Gwynedd township list with 130 acres and this is surely him.

William Williams probably had no children (they are not on the list of grandchildren in Ann Lewis Williams Bennett Roberts' will, nor on the list of nieces and nephews of Daniel Williams, his brother.) Furthermore both Ann Lewis and Daniel Williams leave money for his upkeep, so he is incapacitated in some way.

6. Evan Williams married Dorothy (and perhaps Margaret Richards) and descendants

Evan Williams, father of Anne, wife of George Harmer, was a son of David Williams, of Llansphen, Parish of Llandilwawr, Caernarvonshire, Wales, who brought a certificate for himself, wife and family to Radnor Meeting, where it was recorded May 26, 1693. Evan Williams, "Batchelor," and Margaret Richards, "Spinster," both of Haverford, Welsh Tract, were married at the Public Meeting House at Haverford, July 7, 1697. Margaret Richards was a daughter of John and Susan Richards, who brought a certificate from Dolgelly Meeting in Merioneth-shire, Wales, August 8, 1690. Evan Williams settled on the Skippack, Philadelphia, now Montgomery county, where he died, leaving a will dated August 26, and proven March 3, 1715-16, in which are mentioned his sons, Lewis and David, and daughters, Anne and Elizabeth. The latter married Matthias Rittenhouse and was the mother of David Rittenhouse, eminent astronomer, and treasurer of Pennsylvania during the Revolution. Lewis Evans married Jane, daughter of Thomas Lloyd, of Merion, 1723, died at White Marsh 1727. His brother, David, died in Norriton, 1731, unmarried, leaving his estate to his sisters, Elizabeth Rittenhouse and Anne Harmer.

Since Lewis and Elizabeth both named children Margaret and not Dorothy it is (in my opinion) likely that Margaret Richards is their mother as reported in Colonial and Revolutionary Families of Pennsylvania.

Another unplaced William Williams. Gwynedd records say his wife was named Ellin, so he could easily be confused with the one who married Ellin Foulke.
