Zima—Constance “Connie” Gelder Zima, 99, on September 23, 2024, peacefully, at Brethren Village, a retirement community where she had lived since early 2000, in Lancaster, Pa. Connie was born on October 24, 1925, to Richard Douglas and Beatrice Alice (Taylor) Gelder, in Lancaster. She was known to her friends as “Connie” and as “Mikey” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Connie was a graduate of Manheim High School, Philadelphia Episcopal School of Nursing, and Millersville University. She worked as a registered nurse in obstetrics at Lancaster General Hospital for more than 25 years. After retiring, Connie served the community in many ways. She volunteered at the North Museum, the Lancaster County Library, and in her Brethren Village community, where she worked in the gift shop for many years and at hospice for 13 years.
Connie was very bright and curious about life. She was a spiritual seeker with an open mind about what might follow life on Earth. She loved to talk with others about her ideas and theirs. As a member of Lancaster Meeting, she participated in a group called Quaker Talk, exploring issues of Spirit. At one time she was fascinated by and enjoyed discussing The Tao of Pooh.
Connie lived in Brethren Village for 24 years. Soon after moving there she decided to give up her car and her driver’s license, but not before she fulfilled a dream of owning a bright yellow Volkswagen Beetle. Connie was an involved member of her retirement community, where she was known, respected, and loved.
She continued to travel for as long as she was able, visiting England, Russia, and Iceland. She especially loved being at the beach on Long Beach Island with her family. She was a voracious reader who enjoyed mysteries and her favorite authors. Connie utilized the Lancaster Public Library Bookmobile monthly for her thoughtful selections. She remained sharp and informed into her 90s.
Connie had a passion for classical music. For years she held season tickets to the Philadelphia Orchestra, traveling by bus to attend the concerts. She also attended performances by Lancaster’s local orchestra.
Connie was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Gelder.
She is survived by three children, Pamm Wilson (Michael Studney), Joyce Wilson (Doug), and Chris Wilson; six grandchildren: and 14 great-grandchildren.
