Doris Galliher Stephens

StephensDoris Galliher Stephens, 82, on March 3, 2019, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C. Doris was born on October 19, 1936, in Washington County, Va. She worked her way through Berea College for her undergraduate degree and graduated from Louisiana State University with a master’s in library science. She was head librarian of Amos Memorial Public Library in Sidney, Ohio, and then became the director of Bristol Public Library in Bristol, Tenn. She finally settled in Taylorsville, N.C., and worked 17 years as director of Alexander County Library, retiring in 2003. Drawn to Quaker faith and practice, after moving to Taylorsville she began attending Catawba Valley Worship Group under the care of Charlotte (N.C.) Meeting, where she had her membership. She was a devout Friend and an inspiration to Catawba Valley Friends as she regularly shared Quaker stories and spoke about what brought her comfort and joy.

Doris was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Galliher; and a sister, Margaret Watts. She is survived by two children, Jonathan Stephens and Martin Stephens; one grandchild; and one brother, Charles Galliher.
