Greene—Janice Marie Greene, 81, on August 8, 2022, at Woodland Hill Center nursing facility in Asheboro, N.C. Jan was born on January 31,1941, to Earl H. Greene Sr. and Viola Albertson Greene in Randolph County, N.C. She graduated from Farmer School in 1958, and was the first in her family to attend college, graduating from Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C., in 1962. At Guilford, Jan was an active member of the choir, an interest she maintained throughout her life.
Jan became a member of the Society of Friends as a child when, in 1943, her family joined Science Hill Meeting in Asheboro. Her career was spent serving Quaker organizations, beginning with her tenure as a biology teacher at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She taught at Scarborough School in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., and at the International School of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland.
Jan served New York Yearly Meeting and Baltimore Yearly Meeting. She coauthored Fostering Vital Friends Meeting: A Handbook for Working with Quaker Meetings, published by Friends General Conference in 1999. Friends have found its guidance helpful in seeking consensus when confronted by challenging circumstances.
Jan served as pastor at Goldsboro (N.C.) Meeting and at Liberty (N.C.) Meeting. Upon her retirement, she was a faithful participant at Science Hill Meeting.
Janice was a talented watercolor artist and accomplished pianist. She participated in the Randolph Community Choir.
In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her brother, Earl H. Greene Jr. Jan is survived by two sisters, Brenda Greene and Vickie Greene Selden; a brother, Roger Greene; nine nieces and nephews; and 11 grandnieces and grandnephews.
