Descendants of Jenkin Jenkins

Generation No. 1

JENKIN JENKINS was born 1659 in Wales, and died September 15, 1745 in PA. He married MARY. She was born 1690, and died November 27, 1764 in PA.

Howard Jenkins, Historical Collections of Gwynedd (1897):

"The Jenkins family of Gwynedd and neighboring townships are descended from Jenkin Jenkin, a Welshman, who came to this place in or about 1729. The family record in an old Welsh Bible which was formerly in the possession of John Jenkins, of North Wales, shows the following:

Jenkin Jenkins died September 15, 1745, aged 86 years.
Mary Jenkins died November 27, 1764, aged 74.
John Jenkins born February 15, 1719.

This, therefore, fixes the birth of Jenkin Jenkins in 1659, and of his wife in 1690. November 17, 1730, Jenkin Jenkins bought of Joseph Tucker land in Hatfield [township, now Montgomery Co., Pa.] 350 acres, "reaching from the Gwynedd line nearly or quite to the Cowpath road, and from the Montgomery line about the road running from Lansdale to Colmar." On this he settled, and he was "of Hatfield", when he made his will in 1745. He had bought, in 1738, of the Proprietaries, the Penns, 357 acres of land on the Conestoga, in Earl township, Lancaster county, closely adjoining the Welsh settlers of Carnarvon and Brecknock, and as there were some named Jenkins among them, it is not unlikely that they may have been kinsmen, and that he may have come over from Wales with some of that company, --their arrival being about 1729, also. Jenkin Jenkin, at his death, left 4 children as follows:
1. John, who received 150 acres of the Hatfield property, and half the Conestoga property. He was b. (as above), Feb. 15, 1719, in Wales, and m. Sarah Hawkesworth, dau. of Peter and Mary. (She was b. in 1720, in England, and d. Jan. 16, 1794.) They had eight children. (See below)
2. Mary, d. unm.
3. Jenkin, jr., m. __ Thomas, He received by his father's will, 200 acres in Hatfield, and a share in the Conestoga tract. He had four children: David, d. unm.; Elizabeth m. John Banes; Hannah, d. unm.; Eleanor, m. __ McPherson.
4. Elizabeth, m. John Hawkesworth, son of Peter and Mary; and had seven children.

Children of JENKIN JENKINS and MARY are:

ii. MARY JENKINS.

3. iii. JENKIN JENKINS.

His home in Lansdale is owned by the Lansdale Historical Society and is their headquarters (pictures of home in link).

"The oldest child, John Jenkins, was the progenitor of all the family who now bear the name, his brother Jenkin having no sons. He bought land in Gwynedd, adjoining Lansdale, in 1746. (now Montgomery Co.), Pennsylvania. He married SARAH FOULKE April 26, 1792, daughter of THEOPHILUS FOULKE and MARGARET THOMAS. She was born December 28, 1764 in Richland Twp, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, and died September 15, 1828 in Gwynedd Twp, Montgomery, Pennsylvania.

6. JOHN JENKINS (JOHN2, JENKIN1) was born 1742. He married ELIZABETH WALKER, the widow of ABRAHAM LUKENS.

The parents of Elizabeth Walker have not been identified. Perhaps she is a relative of Abel Walker who married Sinah Pugh. When she married John Jenkin, she had three small children: Jonathan, Margaret and Enos Lukens, and also had a number of step children by Abraham Lukens' first wife who were all grown up and about Elizabeth Walker Lukens' own age. One of those step children, Job Lukens, married a Mary Walker. Abel Walker and Sinah Pugh had daughters named Elizabeth and Mary, but I have not seen any evidence connecting them to the Lukens. Abel and Sinah moved away to Frederick Co., VA and Abel's will might reveal any link.

The militia companies in 1777 were Part of the 4th Battalion, Philadelphia County - Officers: First Company, Capt. Christian Dull, First Lt. Peacock Major, 2nd Lt. John Troxel and Ensign John Shelmire. (Lower Gwynedd twp. today); Third Company, Capt. Stephen Bloom, 1st Lt. Daniel Bloom, 2nd Lt. John Jenkins, Ensign John Johnson (Upper Gwynedd); Fourth company Capt. Samuel Hines, 1st Lt. Jenkin Evans (spelled Evens in the Archives), 2nd Lt. Charles Humphreys, Ensign Walter Evans (spelled Evens in the Archives)(Montgomery twp.).

Levi and Jesse Jenkins were privates in Capt. Bloom's company as well, and Levi Jenkins was fined typical of a Quaker for missing muster.

He received instruction at the academy of Enoch Lewis, the eminent teacher and methematician at New Garden, Chester county; but he added to his opportunities of education a studious and intellectual habit, reading throughout his life, with intelligence and zest, upon an extensive range of subjects. Having been brought up in his father's store in Gwynedd, he engaged in mercantile business in Philadelphia (for some time on Second Street, opposite Christ Church with brother in law Knowles Lancaster), for fourteen years, with good success; but in 1830, upon the decease of his father, he returned to Gwynedd, and took the store, which he conducted nearly to the close of his life. He took a very active interest in public affairs, was for many years a director of the public schools, and was the candidate of his party (it being, however, in the minority for a long period), for the Legislature, etc. His promotion of the construction of the turnpike has already been mentioned. He was, besides, secretary for many years of the Bethlehem turnpike, a director of the Bank of Montgomery County, and of the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, etc. (Howard Jenkins, Historical Collections of Gwynedd)

"John, who married Ann Todd lived to a very advanced age, dying at North Wales at the house of his son-in-law, Abel Lukens, October 5, 1830, in his ninety-seventh year. His children were seven in number: Naomi married Abel Lukens; Charles Todd married Sarah Lukens; Jane married Samuel Rhoads; Ann T. married Jacob B. Rhoads; Silas T. married Eliza Morgan; John S. married Eliza Steever; and Milton married Sarah Ellis.

Many of the family were noted for longevity, as has been seen, living to a good old age. John Jenkins, grandson of Jenkin Jenkins, who served as a first lieutenant in the American army, underwent the trials and privations which marked that period. His commission in the Continental army is still in existence, in possession of one of his descendants.

The Ann Todd whom his son John married, was the daughter of John Todd, and a grandniece of General Porter, of Revolutionary fame. John Jenkins engaged in agricultural pursuits, and also became prominent in local affairs, holding, at one time or another, all the township offices. He was a Democrat in politics, and from his long tenure in the position of assessor in Gwynedd township, covering forty-two years, he was often spoken of as "Assessor John." In his old age, however, he was known far and near as "Uncle John". He owned the property on which East Landsdale is now built, south and east of the railroad. He enlisted in the army for the War of 1812 but was prevented from serving by breaking his leg on the next day."

Philadelphia Inquirer (Joseph S. Kennedy) (His source was "North Penn Abolitionists" by James A. Williams)

After the death of George Lukens (his father in law) Charles Todd Jenkins, Seth Lukens and James Hamer (Seth Lukens had married Dr. Hamer's sister) of Skippack took over his duties on the underground railroad and passed escaped slaves through Montgomery County. These men were also amongst the founders of the Republican Party in Montgomery County.

Ellwood Roberts' Biographical Annals, 1904: Montgomery Co, PA

Vol II - Part 4: pp. 74 - 99.

Charles Todd Jenkins, his oldest son, was the father of J. P. Hale Jenkins, who is one of the most prominent members of the Montgomery county bar, has been a candidate for state senator on the ticket of the Republican party, to which he is devotedly attached, and has held many minor positions, being now the solicitor of the board of county commissioners, an influential and responsible post. Sarah, wife of Charles Todd Jenkins and mother of the subject of this sketch, was a daughter of George Lukens, or Luken, as the name appears to have been originally spelled. Her ancestor was Jan Lucken, who came from Amsterdam, Holland, at the time of William Penn's second voyage to Pennsylvania, settling in Germantown and becoming the progenitor of a numerous and influential family.

Charles Todd Jenkins was born in Gwynedd township, April 3, 1812. He obtained a good common-school education and engaged in teaching, later in butchering and finally in the occupation of farming, which he followed for many years. For twenty-five years he was president of the Line Lexington Life Insurance Company and for thirty-three years treasurer of the Springhouse and Hilltown Turnpike Road Company, these positions occupying much of his time and attention duringis later years. He was, in early life, an ardent Abolitionist, the cause of the downtrodden and oppressed ever appealing strongly to, his sympathies, and his house being a station on the underground railroad for the relief of runaway slaves.

In their religious affiliations, he and his wife were members of the Society of Friends. At one time he took an active part in politics and was twice a candidate for county treasurer although unsuccessful at the polls because of the large Democratic majority in Montgomery county at that time. He served for several years as school director in Hatfield township, and always took an active interest in educational progress. He felt that a vote was a matter of principle and his was the only vote cast in Hatfield township for John P. Hale when he ran for president in 1852.

Charles Todd Jenkins (father) was born April 13, 1812, on the tract of land now owned by Heebner's Agricultural Works at Lansdale, which tract of land at that time formed part of the Jenkins homestead. He was reared in the regulation fashion in those days, working on the farm in summer and autumn, and attending school through the winter when there was no outdoor work to be done. He devoted time to study at home, in which he was assisted by his father, John Jenkins. At the age of eighteen years he commenced teaching school, and taught three winter terms, and afterwards for three full years in succession. In the spring of 1840 he engaged in farming, butchering, and dealing in country produce for the Philadelphia market, which he continued for a period of forty years. In the meantime the North Pennsylvania Railroad was built, and a station located at Colmar.

He established there a depot for coal, flour and feed, which he operated for fourteen years, when he retired and engaged in farming, which he followed until he died. His wife was Sarah, daughter of George and Esther Lukens, of Towamencin township.

She was the mother of the following children: George L.; Anna, died in childhood; Ella, married Oliver M. Evans, of Lansdale; Comly L. Parker, subject of this sketch; Naomi; J. P. Hale, a leading lawyer of Norristown, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this work; Valeria, married George Chapin, of Philadelphia. The ancestor of the Jenkins family in this county (Montgomery) and adjoining counties was Jenkin Jenkin, who came from Wales, and settled in the vicinity in which so many of the name still reside. He had a son and grandson, both named John. The last-named was the father of Charles Todd Jenkins.

Charles Todd Jenkins and Sarah Lukens were married March 26, 1840. She is also deceased.
