Bean (1884) - 1776 tax list, Montgomery twp., John Ambler 175 acres.
Some of the Ambler line here is from the Rootsweb database of Julia Matson

The origins of the Ambler family were investigated by descendant Clarence Roberts. The first of this line was Joseph Ambler who married 1688 under the care of Philadelphia MM, Sarah Jermin [Jarman] a daughter of John and Margaret Jarman of Radnor twp., Chester (now Delaware) Co. and a relative of Elizabeth Jarman who married Edward Morgan of Towamencin and Montgomery townships. Thus the Ambler and Morgan families of Montgomery township were related. The Jarman family had emigrated to America from Montgomeryshire, Wales.

Philadelphia MM records:

8-26-1688 "Elisabeth Fitzwater and Alice Jermin presented Joseph Ambler and Sarah Jermin who declared their intentions of marriage to this meeting, and it being the first time friends appoint Daniel Jones and Ralph Ward to inquire into the said Joseph's clearness and Report to our next monthly Meeting."

9-30-1688 "Alice Jermin and Mary Jones present Joseph Ambler and Sarah Jermin who are left at liberty to proceed in marriage"

A deed for land in West Jersey to Joseph Ambler from 1686 was also found by Clarence Roberts:

1686 Memorial of deed. William Biddle of Mount Hope, WJ to Joseph Ambler of Philadelphia, cordwainer for 100 A in the first 10th of the Province, adjoining Wm Salloway and Saml Barker.

On 8mo., 27, 1713 a Joseph Ambler signed in the relatives column the marriage certificate of William Morgan and Elizabeth Roberts at Gwynedd Meeting and on 9-8-1721 Jos Ambler signed 11th in the near relative col on the marriage cert of John Morgan of Gwynedd and Sarah Lloyd of Merion who were married at Merion.

Joseph and Sarah (Jarman) Ambler had a daughter Mary b. 1689 who died in infancy in 1690 (Philadelphia MM records). The only surviving child, we think, was the Joseph Ambler who married Ann Williams and was the progenitor of the Ambler families of Montgomery, Gwynedd, Upper Dublin and Plymouth townships. Ann Williams was the daughter of John Williams b. May 17, 1670, Merionethshire, Wales and Ellen Klincken. John Williams was the son of William John, b. Merionethshire, Wales who died Abt. August 05, 1685 in Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA and his wife Anne Reynald. The children of Joseph and Ann (Williams) Ambler were: (1) Sarah m. Robert Roberts, son of Cadwallader Roberts and Ellin Humphrey. Robert and Sarah were the parents of Ann Roberts who married Hugh Foulke; (2) Joseph b. October 13, 1725 in Montgomery twp. d. October 11, 1757 at Gwynedd MH, Thomas Shoemaker who was a Quaker minister who lived on the west corner of North Wales and Welsh Rds. (6) Hannah b. January 28, 1734/35 and m. April 27, 1767 at Gwynedd Meeting, Ezekiel Shoemaker. (7) Ann, b. April 22, 1736 who married 1766-10mo.-14 at Gwynedd Meeting, Isaac Jones, son of John and Rebecca (Head) Jones.

She married EDWARD STROUD 1776 in Gwynedd Meeting, Philadelphia (Montgomery) Co., PA, son of JAMES STROUD and ELIZABETH. He was born Abt. 1740, probably in Plymouth twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

Notes for HANNAH FOULKE and Edward Stroud:

At our monthly Meeting held in Gwynedd the 26th of the 3rd mo of 1776
Plymouth, Montgomery Co., PA1st Edward Stroud and Hannah Foulke declared their Intentions of marriage with each other for the first time. Joseph Jones and Isaac Ellis are appointed to inspect his conversation and Clearness and report as they find to our next Monthly Meeting

At our monthly meeting held in Gwynedd the 30th of the 4th month 1776
1st Edward Stroud and Hannah Foulke declared their intentions of marriage with each other the second time and nothing appearing to obstruct consent of Parents being had they are therefore left to their liberty to consumonate [sic] their said intentions. Isaac Ellis and John Roberts are appointed to take care that it be orderly accomplished.

The Stroud family was heavily involved in the cause of Independence during the Revolution. I strongly suspect this is the Edward Stroud who was an express rider in 1776 and 1777 between Congress, the Committee of Safety of Pennsylvania and the militia in Northampton, Lancaster, York and Cumberland counties.

1776, Dec. 11, In Council of Safety, David Rittenhouse, V.P.
"Capt. Geo. Bickham was directed to pay Wm. Morris 5lbs, 5s, 0 and Edward Stroud, 20 lbs, 0s, 0d. and John Bray 2 lbs 10s for riding express to the Country and attendance, to be charged to Congress."

1776, Nov 22., In Council of Safety, Thos Wharton President
"Mr. Nesbitt was directed to pay Edward Stroud 10 lbs, 12 s., 6 d. for riding express to Lancaster, York and Carlisle to order the Militia to march to this City, to be charged to Congress.

27 Jan 1777, In Council of Safety
Thomas Wharton jun'r President
"Capt. Bickham was directed to pay Edward Stroud 44 pound, 15s., for his pay as an express, to be charged to Congress.

July 18, 1777, The Council met.
"An order was drawn on Dav'd Rittenhouse, Esquire, Treasurer in favor of Edw'd Stroud, for the Sum of Ten Pounds for riding Express."

The brother of this Edward Stroud was James Stroud (married Ann Coulston) of Plymouth and he was disowned by Gwynedd Meeting on April 28, 1778 for military service. Amongst other things, this James Stroud was asked to do by the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, were to find out who was supplying the British with supplies during the blockade of Philadelphia and to preside over the confiscation of property of those fighting for the British from Philadelphia County.

The father of Edward Stroud left a will:

JAMES STROUD. Plymouth. May 16, 1788. Proved July 18, 1788.  Montgomery County will book 1.152
To son Edward's 3 children, 100 pds. when of age. To daughter Mary, 5 pds.

Edward and Hannah in the Gwynedd MM records:

1776-5-28. Edward Stroud and Hannah Foulke reported married.
1776-12-31. Edward Stroud and wife Hannah granted certificate to Abington MM.

The Stroud family appears to have largely migrated to New Castle County, Delaware after the Revolution.

Goerge Maris was a man who amassed a fortune in Gwynedd buying and selling properties. He was a Friend (Quaker). He built a dwelling on the place where now is the William Penn Inn. He had acquired the first property from Jesse E. Evans who had inherited it from his father Hugh Evans. George Maris passed the part containing the William Penn Inn to his son William who died soon after him in 1804. The property then went to William's nephew Jesse Maris who had moved to Delware County and sold the property (104 acres) to David Acuff in 1818. (abstracted from Howard Jenkins)

50. CALEB FOULKE (WILLIAM, THOMAS, EDWARD FOULKE) was born February 05, 1736/37 in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, and died January 25, 1811 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. He married JANE JONES January 21, 1762, daughter of OWEN JONES and SUSANNAH EVANS. She was born 1741 in Pennsylvania, and died Abt. 1815 in Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA.

Notes for CALEB FOULKE:

Historical Collections of Gwynedd, by H.M. Jenkins pg 259-60 - Caleb was a merchant in Philadelphia; he doubtless went there early in life, and engaged in business. His name is among the signers to the non-importation agreement of October, 1765. For many years his firm consisted of himself and his younger brother Amos, the name being "Caleb and Amos Foulke." (Papers thus signed I have, of 1774.) Later, however, Amos seems to have retired, as the firm in 1790 (and perhaps earlier), was "Caleb and Owen Foulke," the junior partner being Caleb's eldest son. The latter firm did a large foreign trade; among other things they exported flaxseed and imported linens from Newry, Belfast, ad Cork. These operations were, however, finally disastrous; at Caleb's death his estate was heavily involved, a debt to a London firm being large. In 1776 he had bought the Owen Evans farm, on the Swedes Ford road (now the estate of J. Lukens), and this he made his home during the British occupation of Philadelphia, and at other times, and perhaps permanently resided there toward the close of his life. In 1813, the sheriff of Montgomery county, Isiah Wells, sold it in the hands of his executors, his sons Caleb and Charles, and it was bought by his widow. Jane, who sold it to Dr. Joseph Meredith in 1814. Jane d. in Germantown in 1815; her will was proved December 14th. She appoints her sons Caleb and Charles executors, and names her daughters Lowry Jones, (wife of Evan, of Gwynedd), and Hanna and Jane Foulke.

His niece was Sally Wister, the diarist and her positive attitude towards the Whig side is interesting considering that her uncle Owen Jones, Jr. was, at that time in forced exile in Winchester, Virginia, suspected of Tory sympathies. The Foulke family, on the other hand, was considered to lean to the Whig side, but maintained Quaker pacifist principles as far as we know.

Will of CALEB FOULKE. Gwynedd. September 12, 1809. February 20, 1811. 3.293
To sons Caleb and Charles, all estate, in trust for their mother during her widowhood.
Execs: sons Caleb and Charles.

Philadelphia MM:

Merchant affairs and land speculation:

By marrying into the Owen Jones, Jr. family, Caleb Foulke had ties to the largest land speculators in Pennsylvania, e.g. Samuel and Thomas Wharton, Owen Jones Jr., Ben Franklin and others involved in the Indiana and Vandalia companies. The examples here undoubtedly only scratch the surface on existing documents mentioning Caleb Foulke.

1762 (document offered for sale on internet) - Partly-printed colonial bond in which "William McConnell Jr. ... in the county of Roan Province of North Carolina, Traders ... bound unto Caleb Foulke of the City of Philadelphia..."

On November 12, 1787, Wm. Cooper and Andrew Craig executed and delivered to Augustine Prevost of "Mile End", Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, a bond in the sum of 500 pounds, conditioned for the execution and delivery to said Prevost of a deed for 1500 acres of land on the east side of the Oakes Creek near Lake Conderaqua. This bond must have been assigned to Aaron Burr as, on April 2, 1794, Burr executed an assignment of it to Alexander Ellis reciting the facts and the assignment of the bond to him. The 1500 acres of land, the records show, was conveyed to said Ellis by Craig and Cooper.

It is a fair inference from these last transactions that as Augustine Prevost, then living in Pennsylvania, knew of the revival of the judgment against Croghan, his father-in-law's executor, Barnard Gratz, living in Philadelphia must also have known of it and deliberately failed to appear in the proceedings in court above set out.

On the 8th day of December 1786, Joseph Wharton executed and delivered to said William Cooper and Andrew Craig a deed of all his interest in the Croghan Patent reciting specifically: that it covered 20,000 acres of land, previously mortgaged to William Franklin, and on November 30, 1769, mortgaged to Thomas Wharton, in trust, to secure the sum of 1700 pounds due the said Thomas Wharton and the said Joseph Wharton, Joseph Galloway and Abel James; and all the lands which on April 3, 1780, said Croghan conveyed to Joseph Wharton being all the lands not theretofore conveyed out of said Croghan's 100,000 acre patent and containing 25,477 acres and a lot of 1057 acres on Lake Otsego. The consideration was $2000 and the deed one of warranty.

On December 28, 1796, Joseph Wharton made an affidavit of title which recites: "that in October 1785 the assignees of said Joseph, namely Samuel Stovell, Samuel Pleasant and Caleb Foulke not only would not purchase and discharge the mortgage on certain lands computed to be about 26,600 acres which said {395} Joseph had bought of the late colonel George Croghan in March 1780 to secure payment of a debt from said George of about 6000 pounds, situated on Lake Otsego, Tryon County, New York, which mortgaged land was bought by William Cooper and Andrew Craig, who personally by themselves, and by this affirmant (Joseph Wharton), offered to dispose of said mortgage to them, said assignees, at the same rate and payments that they bought it at for the use of all affirmant's creditors, but that they told and declared to this affirmant that they would not buy off the said mortgage because they, the said assignees, asserted that the land was not equal in value to the first encumbrance (Franklin's mortgage) so they gave this affirmant full liberty not only to recover by law whatever he in future could from said William and Andrew but also whatever sum of money or compromise which they might make or commute or offer to this affirmant should be wholly and solely his and further affirms and solemnly declares that at least twelve months after the sale of said lands and its purchase by William and Andrew at the sheriff's sale, they did repeatedly proffer the same both directly and indirectly to the said assignees and that they peremptorily and in the opinion of this deponent and his creditors basely and wickedly and uncharitably refuse to buy the same although this affirmant's money then lay in one of the banks in the City of Philadelphia, sufficient to pay for the same, and under their control." This affidavit is sworn to before the Mayor of Philadelphia.

53. LYDIA FOULKE (WILLIAM, THOMAS, EDWARD FOULKE) was born June 09, 1756 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., Pennsylvania. She married JOHN SPENCER Abt. 1783, son of JACOB SPENCER [Jacob the son of Samuel Spencer and Mary Dawes] and HANNAH JARRETT. He was born 5mo. (May) 29, 1756, and died 1799.

Howard Jenkins (Genealogical Sketch of the Descendants of Samuel Spencer of Pennsylvania):

"John Spencer, of Moreland, son of Jacob and Hannah, was born Fifth month 29, 1756, and died Ninth month 7, 1799. He married (138) Lydia, daughter of William and Hannah Foulke, of Gwynedd. Lydia Foulke was born Fourth month 9, 1756.

John and Lydia were married at Gwynedd, 1783. Horsham Monthly Meeting granted John his certificate of clearness to marry. Seventh month 30, 1783. Their home was on the family homestead of his father, Jacob Spencer, in Moreland. At the time of his marriage, a new western " end," - two rooms, - was added to the house which had been built by Jacob in 1744, and this part remains, little altered. (Memorandum of 1891.) John died a comparatively young man, and left his wife with a family of nine children, the oldest only in her sixteenth year, and the youngest but a month old. He had not made a will, and on the 31st of Tenth month, (1799), letters of administration were granted to his brother Jarrett Spencer, and his brother-in-law, Jesse Foulke. In the Eighth month, 1814, proceedings were taken in the Orphans' Court, at Norristown, before Judge Bird Wilson, to have a jury of inquest in partition, application being made by Lydia Spencer, widow, and children Susanna, Edith, George, Priscilla, Jesse, and Jonathan, and by Jonathan Jarrett, guardian of Rebecca, Rachel, and Lydia, who were still in their minority. A jury was appointed (Jarrett Spencer, Jesse Foulke, Job Roberts, John Iredell, Jonathan Iredell, Gove Mitchell, Evan Jones, William Foulke), who reported that the property, "a certain messuage and about 200 acres of land," could not be divided without injury. They valued the property at 102.50 per acre, and November 14, 18 14, "George Spencer, the eldest son, appeared in open court," and took it at the valuation, Jesse Foulke and Jarrett Spencer being his sureties.

In the old mansion, George Spencer continued to live the remainder of his life, — until 1876. Facts concerning him will be given below, but here I may record an incident which serves to suggest the character of his home, and also gives a clue to the progress of refinement in country life. Lemuel Thomas, (the writer's uncle), says that in his youth (say 1845), he went one day in summer "to help Cousin George Spencer with his harvest." When he returned, he told them at home (Spencer Thomas's, Upper Dublin), how at Cousin George's house " they had netting to the doors and windows to keep the flies out ! "

Children of LYDIA FOULKE and JOHN SPENCER are:

i. SUSAN SPENCER, b. April 10, 1784, d. 3. 14, 1872, unm..

iii. GEORGE SPENCER, b. 4. 29, 1787, d. 4. 10, 1876, m., 10. 21, 1839, Mary, daughter of David and Hannah (Jacobs) Thomas, of Cayuga, N. Y. Mary was born 12. 25, 1800, and d. 3. 11, 1889. Her father, David Thomas, born in Montgomery county, Pa., 1776, removed to Cayuga county in 1805, and was chief engineer of the Erie Canal, west of Rochester, and later principal engineer of the Welland Canal, of Canada. " He was distinguished as a florist and pomologist, and by his writings rendered great service to scientific agriculture." Two of his sons, brothers of Mary, were John J. Thomas, famous as an agricultural writer, and botanist (one of the editors of the Genesee Partner, Country Gentleman, etc.), and Dr. Joseph Thomas, distinguished as a scholar and author, editor of several standard gazetteers, dictionaries, etc. — George and Mary Spencer both lived, as shown above, to advanced age, each dying at 89. George was an estimable and cultured man, whose home, for more than sixty years, (after he took the homestead, in 1814), was a centre of Friendly hospitality. He had no issue. (Howard Jenkins)

"In an old family Bible in Reading, Pa., appear these two entries: Anne Boone was bornon the first day of the week, about five o'clock in the afternoon, on
the 3rd of April, Old Style, A.D. 1737, or A. D. 1737, Apr. 14, New Style. Abraham Lincoln and Anne Boone were married on the fifth day of the week, on the 10th day of July, A.D. 1760. When his age was 23 yrs., 8 months and 11 days. Her age 23 years, 2 months and 26 days. He being 5 mon., 15 days and 22 hrs. older than she. In Exeter Meeting records, there is the following: Anne Lincoln (Relict of Abraham Lincoln and daughter of James Boone), departed this life on the 4th day of the 4th m. A.D. 1807, aged 69 yrs, 11 mo., 21 d., 14 h., 10 m., and was interred at Exeter on the 6th, the 2nd d. of the week.

Abraham Lincoln of Berks Co., the son of Mordedai and Mary Lincoln, was born in Amity Township, Philadelphia Co., subsequently Berks Co., Pa. His father, who died in May of that year, a few months before the birth of Abraham, was the ancestor of President Lincoln. Abraham was brought up on his father's farm. He received a fair education, and became quite prominent in the affairs of his native county. For six years, from 1773 to 1779, he held the office of County Commissioner. He was an active patriot, and was appointed one of the sub-lieutenants of the county Mar. 21, 1777. He served in the General Assembly from 1782 to 1786, and was a delegate to the Pennsylvania Convention to ratify the Federal Constitution in 1787. He did not sign the ratification. Under the act of March 14, 1784, he was appointed one of the Commissioners of Fisherics. He was a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1780-90, and appears to bhave been a man of much influence in that body. He died at his residence in Exeter Township, in his seventieth year.

The Lincolns were Congregationalists and the Boones Quakers, consequently Anne Boom's marriage to Abraham Lincoln was "out of Meeting," and considered a disorderly act. For this she was disciplined by the Exeter Monthly Meeting, and acknowledged her error to the Meeting on August 27, 1761.

In Volume II, page 153, of Berks County Wills, is recorded the probate on Feb. 17, 1806, of the will of Abraham Lincoln of Exeter: "administered to Mordecai and Thomas, sons, the widow renouncing." In the same volume, page 204, is record of the estate of "Anne Lincoln, widow, Exeter," administered to her sons Mordecai and Thomas Lincoln, Feb. 25, 1808."

PRE-RAILWAY TRIPS TO NORTHERN PENNSYLVANIA.

BY HOWARD M. JENKINS.

"Among the papers preserved by Cadwalader Foulke, of Gwynedd (d. 1830), is a brief diary of two rides northward over the mountains to the Bentley's Creek settlement, on the New York line, in Bradford County. As these trips were made, one in 1823, and the other in 1826, they just preceded the era of the railroads, and the memoranda which have been made afford us definite details, thougli meagre, as to the manner, expense, and rapidity of such travelling in that day, as well as aid in fixing localities, names of places, owners of hotels, etc. Cadwalader Foulke was a great-grandson of Edward Foulke (a first settler at Gwynedd, 1698), and was born at Richland, Bucks County, in 1765. About 1805 he removed

to Gwynedd, and added to his ordinary avocation of farming many engagements as a surveyor and conveyancer in the middle and lower townships of Montgomery County. His surveys were remarkably careful, and in the searches of land titles in that section his drafts are well known for their accuracy.

These trips to Northern Pennsylvania he made in the interest of the estate of 'Squire John Roberts, of Montgomery (township), of which he was an executor. 'Squire John had purchased, in 1808, a tract of seven hundred and fifty-one acres of land located on Bentley's Creek, in Luzerne (subsequently and now Bradford) County. James Chapman, the grantor to Roberts, held under a Pennsylvania patent, but the lands were claimed by other parties, who were occupying them under the Connecticut claim, and a long and tedious series of suits of ejectment, with negotiations for compromise, etc., followed. The journey from Gwynedd to Bentley's Creek makes a distance of about one hundred and seventy-five miles by the best route, which is that of the present railway : to the Lehigh River at Bethlehem, then northwestward over the mountains to Wilkes-Barre, and from there up the North Branch of the Susquehanna by Tunkhannock to Towanda. This is substantially the route of the first journey. Cadwalader was accompanied on it by his co-executor, William Foulke, of Gwynedd, and probably by Samuel Iden, of Richland. They rode in a wagon, and took seven days for the trip. Returning, they came in part by a different route, crossing southwardly the mountains, through what is now Sullivan County, into Columbia County, and striking the North Branch at Berwick; then bearing southeastward over the Nescopec and other ridges to Mauch Chunk, and so down the Lehigh to Bethlehem.

His second trip Cadwalader seems to have made alone, and from the charges for toll, which appear too low for any sort of vehicle, he was probably on horseback, though he was then nearly sixty-two years old. This time he went up through Berks County, spending the first night with his Quaker friend, Thomas Lee, (ref. 1) at Oley (or Maiden Creek), on the east bank of the Schuylkill, below Reading; thence by

Hamburg and Catawissa to Bloomsburg, and thence northward through the Fishing Creek settlements into Sullivan County, and so to Bradford. His return was by Tunkhaunock and Wilkes-Barre, then over the new turnpike towards Easton, by the Wind Gap to Bethlehem. This trip required six days only, going up, though the distance by this route, from Gwynedd to Sheppard's Tavern on the New York line, appears by Cadwalader's memoranda to be one hundred and eighty-three miles.

The charges to the traveller, at the hotels where he stopped, are of interest. At Sellersville, in Bucks County, Thomas Sellers charged him twenty-five cents for dinner, as he went up, and the same sum, when he came back, for "two quarts of oats, a gill of wine bitters, and cakes." At several places the charges were eighteen and three-quarter cents for breakfast and fifty cents for supper and lodging.(ref 2)

The memoranda of the first trip are as follows :

Ref. 1 Thomas Lee had married Mary Boone, who was the daughter of James Boone (uncle to Daniel, the Kentucky pioneer) and Mary Foulke. Mary Lee was a second cousin of Cadwalader, but had recently died, at the age of eighty-six.

Ref 2 These charges, however, were not below the general custom of even a later day. Before the war (say thirty years ago, — 1854), Jacob Quillman, at the Veranda House, Norristown, charged but twenty-five cents for dinner, abundant and good, though plain. Ref 3. 1 This was the Susquehanna and Tioga turnpike, extending from Berwick, on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, up into New York State. It was a very extensive public work, " projected," says Day (" Historical Collections of Pennsylvania," p. 136), " at the early settlement of Bradford County, about 1802-4, and driven through the then wilderness by the exertions of Philadelphians and others interested in the lands." (These dates, however, may be misleading. In Gordon's " Gazetteer," 1832, it is stated to have been chartered in 1818. The State subscribed $30,400 to its stock. Its completion was subsequent to 1820.)"

At a general Court of Quarter Sessions of the Peace, held for the City and County of Phildaelphia, 6th of June, A.D. 1774, Thomas Lancaster of Whitemarsh township, in this county, Yeoman, acknowledges himself to be held and firmly bound to our Sovereign Lord the King in the sum of Thirty Pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to be levied on his Goods, Chattels, Lands and Tenements to the use of our said Lord the King sub conditione. Notes for EVERARD FOULKE: 1781 - disowned by Richland MM for taking the oath of Allegience to Pennsylvania. Continued active in the Meeting nonetheless.

1794, Already a Bucks County commissioner he was appointed tax assessor for Lower Milford. Everard was opposed by most of the German residents of Lower Milford who petitioned to have George Weikert in his place and three weeks after his appointment petitioned to have Foulke removed because of his plural office office holdings and his family connections in the district...which we conceive may have a disagreeable influence in deciding suits in which they may be concerned."

When John Fries raised his Rebellion in the upper end of Bucks Co. and Northampton Co. PA in 1798, Everard was forced to desist in collecting the US government taxes (he was the chief assessor for Lower Milford twp.). Everard was called to testify for the prosecution in John Fries second trial for treason. Under cross examination by Fries (whose counsel had quit, he was representing himself) an event where Everard escaped a mob with Fries' help by leaving via the back door was described.

Everard was under some discipline by Richland Meeting for signing the Oath supporting the American Revolution. Ironically his supposed lack of participation in the Revolution was one of the complaints of the Germans involved in Fries Rebellion.

There is a letter from him among the Cadwallader Foulke papers, dated July 21, 1818, in which he regrets his present inability to visit Gwynedd, as he is about leaving for Montreal and Quebec, by way of Ballston and Saratoga, intending to be absent a month. His estate was settled by Roberts Vaux, Esq. of Philadelphia, adminstrator. An obituary article in MS., among the Cadw. Foulke papers (taken apparently from a Philadelphia newspaper) says he was brought up by his grandfather (John Evans who left him valuable bequests), and lived with him till 1805, when he engaged as an apprentice to a mercantile house in Philadelphia. The article describes him in terms of warm praise as a very exemplary and much beloved man, devoted in his leisure to literature and scientific studies, and with "talents and acquirements remarkably devoted to the good of his fellow creatures." He was one of the Directors of the Public Schools; of the Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb; a Manager of the Apprentice's Library, and actively interested in other public institutions.

113. CADWALADER EVANS (MARGARET FOULKE, EVAN, EDWARD FOULKE) was born December 25, 1762 in Gwynedd twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA, and died October 26, 1841 in Philadelphia PA. He married HARRIET VERENA MUSSER, daughter of JOHN MUSSER.

Howard Jenkins:

Cadwalader Evans, jr., was the son of John and Margaret. He was born at Gwynedd, December 25, 1762, resided there until 1812, when he removed to Philadelphia, and died in that city in 1841. He received a good education, and with unusual energy and mental vigor, made his mark early. He was trained as a surveyor, and for many years, in his own neighborhood and elsewhere, followed his profession with success. In the mature and later years of his life he performed important work in surveying in distant parts of the State, especially the western counties. In 1790 he was first elected to the State Legislature, and he then entered upon a lengthened career as a member of the House. He was chosen continuously from Montgomery county for nine years, -1790 to 1798 inclusive, -his colleagues including James Vaux, Jonathan Roberts, Nathaniel B. Boileau, Frederick Conrad, and other prominent and able men. Among these, though he was under thirty when first elected, he at once took a prominent part, being placed on important committees in his first year; his name appears in many places in the House journal coupled with that of Albert Gallatin, and others of the most distinguished members in that period. In 1798, the last year the Legislature met in Philadelphia, he was unanimously chosen Speaker of the House. Again in 1802, and in 1805, he was elected from Montgomery county, and in 1814, after his removal to Philadelphia, he was elected one of the city members.

In 1816 he sold the old family homestead in Gwynedd to Charles Willing Hare, Esq., of Philadelphia. He was one of the local directors of the Bank of the United States, after its recharter in 1816. In 1813 he had been among the first to actively urge the construction of a canal along the Schuylkill, from Philadelphia to the coal regions, and he was elected the first president of the Schuylkill Navigation Company, and served in that capacity for many years. In 1830, when, on account of advancing age, he resigned the presidency, the stockholders, at their annual meeting, voted that he should be presented a silver vase as a testimonial of their high appreciation of his services. Joseph Foulke, in his manuscript Reminiscences, furnished the author, says of C.E.:

"He began his distingushed career about the 18th or 19th year of his age. One of his first engagements was surveying for the road jury, and laying out what is now called the "Lower State road", at least the western section of it terminating in what is now the Bethlehem turnpike. This was in 1786. He was a man of quick and clear perception, of ready utterance, and a powerful disputant; he was eminently gifted in conveyancing, and in drawing instruments of writing....The last office he filled, I think, was one of the electors that made Gen. Harrison President, in 1840. As a surveyor in old time, though a young man, he stood high, and great confidence was reposed in him. He, Robert Loller, and Archibald McClean did most of the surveying in our parts until about 1807, when Cadwalader Foulke came to Gwynedd and took a large portion of the business."

Foulk amputate an American soldier's leg, which he completed in 20 minutes, while the physician of the military hospital was 40 min. performing an operation of the same nature ;" and Dr. Barnabas Binney, writing from the " General Hospital, French Creek, 30 miles from Philadelphia,"under date of 31 August, 1778, in mentioning a number of medical men with the army, says, "Young J. Foulk is with post; a pedantic young Quaker still." Dr. Foulke is said to have been the earliest demonstrator and lecturer on anatomy in the Medical College of Philadelphia, and during the yellow fever epidemic of 1793 he absented himself from his home for days at a time, devoting his attention to the sick in the infected districts. He was a member of the College of Physicians, and an officer of the American Philosophical Society, before which body he delivered the annual oration in 1789. He married, 8 May, 1788, Eleanor, daughter of Richard Parker, and had issue. (source: History of the Bringhurst family: with notes on the Clarkson, De Peyster and ...
