Gwynedd Friends' Burial Ground, older burials
Many of the oldest graves probably never had markers, and there are many areas of the graveyard devoid of markers, suggesting that they are missing. There are burial records from the early period, but they appear to be incomplete. It is known, from meeting minutes, that there was a discussion about the appropriateness of marking graves amongst the first settlers (see note 1). The oldest marked grave, Martha Bates, 1714, is apart from the other older burials of the cemetery. Her parents were not Friends, and she has the largest tombstone in the burying-ground, and it is fairly simple. The oldest part of the burying ground has stones on only about 10-20% of the graves. There are also many unmarked graves of Revolutionary War soldiers who died when Gwynedd meeting-house was used as a hospital after the Battle of Germantown. The location of these soldiers' graves is found on a map.Locations are relative to Sumneytown Pike. A is Southeast towards route 202, while R is northwest towards North Wales borough; 1 is nearest to Sumneytown Pike, while 69 is farthest away, towards the meeting parking lot. The remnants of an old path throughr the center of the graveyard, parallel to Sumneytown Pike can still be made out between rows 39 and 40 on the Location Grid used here. Edward Foulke's grave (O49, date 1741) is at the corner of an empty area presumed to be where some of the unmarked oldest burials are located. This may also be where the victims of the 1745 epidemic are buried (don't know for sure). Another area vacant of stones, near the grave of Martha Bates and the location of the old 1712 Meeting House, may contain the oldest burials.

Sources: Map of burial ground in the meeting-house; James A. Quinn, walk of burial ground, December, 2001. Some birth and death dates are from Howard Jenkins's "Historical Collections of Gwynedd." In 2008 a card file came into the Historian's possession which contained the results of at least two other persons walking the graveyard about 1910 & 1940 which listed many dates no longer legible; Burial Records of Gwynedd Meeting on microfilm at the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College.
II. Pennlyn Burial Ground
After the split between Hicksites and Orthodox Friends, a separate Gwynedd Meeting for Orthodox Friends was set up on Pennlyn-BlueBell Pike in Lower Gwynedd. A Burial ground was established next to the new Meeting House (called the Orthodox Cottage). In 1962, this burial ground reverted to Gwynedd Friends Meeting. The source of this is a note from Germantown Friends who took over the Orthodox Meeting after it was laid down.

Note 1. Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Rules of Discipline, 1706 and again in 1733: "It is the sense of this meeting, that no monuments, either of wood or stone be affixed to graves in any of our burial grounds; and if any yet remain therein, that these be forthwith removed - so that no cause of uneasiness on this account may exist, or partiality be justly chargeable upon us."

Grave stone of Martha Bate, April 1714. | ||||||
And death shall have no dominion. Dead man naked they shall be one With the man in the wind and the west moon; When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone, They shall have stars at elbow and foot; Though they go mad they shall be sane, Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again; Though lovers be lost love shall not; And death shall have no dominion. -Dylan Thomas Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death no more hath dominion over him. -Romans 6:9 |
