When I ask myself,
‘What is devotion?’
I find that my
answers are all verbs:
to kneel and kiss the ground,
and then rise to protect it
to set my ego aside
and then to stand grounded
in my surest self
to listen for understanding
and then stand under what
I have heard, to shore
it up and help it breathe
to breathe in love for that which
is holy, and then to exhale
my delight into the world,
making art that hallows
our groundedness in You
