The Secret to Quaker Prayer: Holding in the Light

Is “holding in the Light” just an expression Friends use instead of saying they’re going to pray for you? Does it show an intense kind of care and concern for that person? In this episode, several Friends share their thoughts on this form of Quaker prayer.

“Holding someone in the Light, for me,” says Brent Bill, “means hoping they’ll be drawn into that healing light and love of God.” Jade Rockwell recognizes the discomfort some Friends feel when they’re held in the Light by others. “A lot of times we don’t want our meeting to pray for us. We get in our habits, in our defenses, in our addictions, and we don’t always want to face that stuff. The light is the place where we see those things, but it’s also where we see that we are loved.”
