Sonnet for George Fox’s Margaret

I see you there in the new snow
Barefoot, afire with the Lord,
Margaret’s blessing follows slow.
Her generous heart her only sword

To keep you safe, where safety’s none
For those who prophesy for peace.
She understands you are the One
Who can bring all the wars surcease.

But standing at the open door,
To see the outfit that you choose,
She wonders that God will allow
His prophets to go without shoes.

Surely shod would serve as well
When calling Heaven up from Hell.
