He was a son of Edward and Ann, a grandson of John and a great-grandson of Joseph Ambler, all of Montgomery Township. Mary Johnson Ambler was living in Ambler in 1856, when the terrible railroad accident occurred near Fort Washington, by the collision of an excursion train heavily loaded, with a local passenger train. On hearing of the accident she gathered lint, bandages, and other necessary materials and at once set out on foot for the scene of the disaster two miles away. She remained in constant attendance on the wounded passengers throughout the day, rendering conspicuous service to the suffereing victims. from "Fair Land Gwynedd" by Phil Johnson Ruth (1991):

Recollection of Gwynedd Schools in the Late 1700's from Quaker minister and educator Joseph Foulke (1786-1863):

"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There wa no house for the purpose, but what was called 'the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament: we had Dilworth's Spelling Book and Dilworth's Assistant or Arithmetic. Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was, however, a small part of the spelling-book called 'A New Guide to the English Tongue', and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar.

My next schooling was in 1795, in the house late the property of William Buzby, on the Bethlehem Road, above the Spring-House. It was a kind of family school, taught by Hannah Lukens. I next went to Joshua Foulke, my father's elder brother, and an old man. He taught in the log schoolhouse, near the eighteen-mile stone on the Bethlehem road. My father, with the help of his neighbors, built this house [about 1798], on a lot set apart for this purpose, at the southern extremity of his premises. This log school-house stood about thirty years, and besides Joshua Foulke, we had for teachers William Coggins, Hannah Foulke, Benjamin Albertson, Hugh Foulke (my brother), John Chamberlain, Christian Dull (Jr.), Daniel Price, and Samual Jones (I have probably not named all, or given them in the order in which they came).

The Free School of Montgomery, however, was more popular. The salary there, $160 a year, secured more competent teachers than other schools in the neighborhood. I can remember when the teacher's pay was from a dollar to ten shilings per quarter for each scholar, and he obtained his board by going about from house to house among his employers, and it was a remark that people would trust a teacher to instruct their children to whom they would not lend a horse!"

Howard Jenkins, Historical Collections of Gwynedd:

Joseph Foulke
Amongst the community of the Friends, at Gwynedd, the most conspicuous figure, for many years, was Joseph Foulke. He was born there, May 22, 1786. In 1817, he appeared as a minister, and was admitted a member of the meeting of ministers and elders in 1821, after which he continued in the ministry to the end of his life, more than forty years. He made numerous visits to distant meetings, including those in New Jersey, New York, Canada, Maryland, Ohio, and Indiana. He had learned the trade of a wheelwright (which was also originally the trade of his father), and had expected to pursue it as an occupation, but his inclinations turned to teaching, and in 1811 he took charge of Friends' School at Plymouth, where he continued for six years; and then, after teaching one year at Upper Dublin, he established in the autumn of 1818, a boarding school for young men and boys, at Gwynedd, on part of his father's estate. This school he conducted for many years with marked success, and it was continued later, until about 1860, in the charge of his sons Daniel and Joseph, and his nephew, Hugh Foulke Jr. Joseph published (Philadelphia : 1844) a memoir of Jacob Ritter (a preacher among Friends, who had been a Revolutionary soldier: see in Watson's Annals details of his confinement in the British prison in Philadelphia). He also conducted for many years the publication of the "Friends' Almanac", furnishing for it the astronomical calculations. In 1836 he visited Washington as one of a committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to influence Congress against the admission of Arkansas as a slave state. (See Curtis's Life of James Buchanon, Vol. I, p. 337; Vol II, p. 181.) His MS. Journal, giving many interesting details of his life, has been repeatedly drawn upon for this work

Evan Jones:

Evan Jones was born in Montgomery on the old homestead of his grandfather, John Jones, carpenter. He was the son of Evan and Hannah Jones. He learned the trade of tanning with his cousin Isaiah Jones, of Buckingham, and, returning to Montgomery, established a tannery at Montgomery Square, where he was in business for several years. In 1815, he with Thomas Shoemaker, Cadwallader Foulke, and Cadwallader Roberts, purchased the John Evans estate (now, 1896, partly the estate of S.S. Hollingsworth), of Charles Willing Hare, and about two years later (the purchase meantime proving to be a bad speculation), Evan took the homestead himself, with a large part of the land, and removed to it, making it his home for the remainder of his life. He there dispensed a liberal hospitality; his house was the place of entertainment for many visiting Friends and others. His means, measured by the local standard, were ample, and his social disposition made his fireside attractive and pleasant. He was an active member of the Friends, was clerk of meetings for business, and generally a pillar of the Society, locally. He filled many important business positions, being amongst other things the first President of the Bethlehem Turnpike Co. In 1840, he was the Whig candidate for County Commissioner, and received the highest vote of any on the ticket. His four marriages have already been mentioned (link).

Foulke Family Helps the Underground Railroad

The southern track of the railroad through Montgomery County, which ran from Plymouth Meeting to Buckingham (Bucks County), had a station near Penllyn, near the Orthodox Friends Meeting House, run by William Foulke. Eliza Ambler Foulke, historian of the Gwynedd Friends Meeting, wrote of "a large mound on the side of the meeting house, opposite the graveyard and easily discernible from the road" which her grandmother identified as a sheltering cave used to hide fugitive slaves.

As an Inspector of Moyamensing Prison he was instrumental in having a woman physician placed in charge of the female prisoners, and was also interested in having matrons placed in station houses to receive and care for women picked up at night by the police. Before this reform was established, there were often disgraceful occurrences at the station houses, where only men were in charge. Robert R. From a History of Warren Co., Iowa (1908) Source: (compiled by Mrs. Buela Imhoff)
"In Liberty Twsp., Mark Williams was the 3rd settler. The first recorded entry of land was of John Williams, June 29, 1849. Samuel James, Robert Kester, and James Coles made settlements further south on Otter Creek. The township was organized and named Liberty because may of the early settlers were abolitionists and some had left their eastern homes because of the contention over the rights of the slave. James Coles, who named the township, was known to be very much opposed to the fugitive slave law and assisted more than one slave to escape into Canada. Joseph N. Coles taught the first school."

From History of Liberty Center Methodist Church, by Mrs. Orville Thompson. Source: (compiled by Mrs. Buela Imhoff)
"The M.E. church at Liberty Center was organized in 1856. The first minister was J. W. Todd. The charter members were: Enoch and Polly Matson, John and Rachel Matson, Jerry and Juliann Matson, William and Mahalis Berry, Sarah Coles, Jerry and Mary Berry, and Polly and Ellen Coles.
"The minister held a revival meeting that winter in a log cabin located where the Christian church used to stand southwest of Liberty Center. There were a goodly number of converts at this meeting. When the period for probation for new members had expired, the membership had increased to eighty. It was decided to secure a building for worship. In 1860, the original part of the building of S. J. Shupe's store was leased and afterwards purchased of Nathan Mosher for a church. They worshipped in this building on the corner until 1870 when the original part of the present church was erected. In 1906, the church was enlarged. The lot the church stands on was donated by Jerry Boston. The trustees were J. P. McFarland, Joseph Michael, W. E. Vanderventer, Benjamine Coles and W. H. McKenney."

From page copied from published book, source: Buela Imhoff
"In the fall of 1856, Rev. J. W. Todd, John and George Conrad, conducted revival services which continued at intervals far into the summer of 1857. A Methodist church was organized with the following members: Enoch and Polly Matson, John and Rachel Matson, Benj. and Julianna Matson, William and Mahala Berry, Sara Coles, and Mary and Sarah Berry. Polly and Ellen Coles were the first probationers; Joseph Michael, the first class leader; and Jacob Garbison, the first local preacher."

Morgan Morgan, born 5th-mo. 16, 1782, was a justice of the peace at Montgomeryville for twenty-five years. He was a blacksmith and gunsmith by trade, and was one of the workmen in that occupation who could make a double barreled gun in the early days. He was a native of Horsham township, of Welsh parentage, his father having emigrated from Wales and settled there, where he died. He was a member of Horsham Friends' Meeting, and one of the building committee appointed to erect the present meeting house. Morgan Morgan married, 11th-mo. 15, 1810, Ann Custard, born 8th-mo. 14, 1787. Their children: Amelia, born 8th-mo. 5, 1811, died at the age of four months; Joseph C., born l0th-mo. 10, 1812, died 2d-mo. 27, 1888; Amelia Ann, born 5th-mo. 10, 1815, died in 1855; Antrim F., born 8th-mo. 31, 1818, died 12th-mo. 24, 1897; George, born 2d-mo. 7, 1821, died 3d-mo. 2, 1839; Elizabeth, born 6th-mo. 20, 1823; Hannah, born 12th-mo. 28, 1828.

His blacksmith shop stood opposite Gwynedd Friends meeting house, just south of the Post Office. It was he who built the "Beaumont House" in 1817 which still stands near the corner of Route 202 and Meeting House Rd (owned by Foulkeways). Apparently he removed to Montgomery township at some point and sold the house to Dr. Foulke.

He also engaged in the wood business there for a number of years. In politics he was a Whig, and a Republican after the formation of that party in 1856, but in the latter years of his life he affiliated with the Prohibition party, believing that the importance of legislation against the liquor traffic- overbalanced every other issue. She was born December 08, 1799 in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania, and died January 06, 1877 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania.

Howard Jenkins:

"Dr. Antrim Foulke, the son of Theophilus, the younger, was born at Richland, March 23, 1793. The accidental death of his father, when he was but three years old, left him in the sole care of his mother. At her desire he learned the trade of a coach-maker, but having completed it, at the age of twenty-one, he turned his attention to the profession of medicine, and studied with Dr. Joseph Meredith, at Gwynedd, whom he joined, after completing his studies, as a partner, and so continued until Dr. Meredith's death. He then remained in practice at Gwynedd, with remarkable success, until 1848, when he removed to Philadelphia, and there practiced until his death, in 1861. He was by many elements of character admirably fitted for his profession, and his wide range of visits to the country around his residence testified to the confidence reposed in him."

She married RICHARD MOORE January 07, 1819, son of HENRY MOORE and PRISCILLA JACKSON. He was born April 20, 1794 in Montgomery twp., Montgomery Co., PA, and died April 30, 1875 in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.

Notes for SARAH FOULKE: JQ: I have in my possession a memorial of Sarah Foulke written by daughter Hannah for the memorial service.

Notes for RICHARD MOORE:

Richard Moore ran the next stop north in Bucks on the Underground Railroad for slaves escaping through Montgomery County from conductors such as the Corson brothers (in Plymouth and Providence), the Lewis sisters (near Phoenixville) or Seth Lukens (Towamencin).

History of Bucks County by Davis:

"I have twice been granted interviews by Alfred Moore, grandson of Richard, and learn from him that Richard Moore, while not ready to unite with the early Abolitionists in their revolutionary motto, 'No Union with slaveholders,' still felt prompted, by kind sympathy, to help on their way the escaping fugitives. His home soon became known to the Friends further south as a place where all fugitives forwarded would receive kindly care and needed assistance in continued flight. Although slaveholders rarely proceeded so far as this in pursuit of their slaves, they occasionally did so, and, more than once the master presented himself at the front door of Richard Moore, a few minutes after the object of his search, being warned of his approach, had escaped by a back door to a safe place of concealment in the rear. From a record he kept, the number of fugitive slaves he assisted to escape, down to the Civil war, was about six hundred.

One of the slaves, who reached the Quakertown station about the time of the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law, 1850, had escaped from Abraham Shriner, Pipe creek, Maryland. At home he was known as "Bill Budd," but now assumed that of "Henry Franklin." He was employed as Richard Moore's carter several years, and, in this capacity, was enabled to assist on their way to Canada several fugitives. He was employed carting coal from the Lehigh to Quakertown, and, when there were fugitives to be sent forward, he would load his wagon with them in the evening, cover them with straw, take them up to the next station during the night, and return with a load of coal next day. It is thought one of the fugitives who then escaped was Parker, the principal hero of the Christiana tragedy. Franklin afterward became janitor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, where he died.*] (Bucks County History, 1901)

In a paper read before the Montgomery County Historical Society, by the late Dr. Hiram Corson, reference was made to several interesting cases of escaped slaves whom he forwarded to Richard Moore and others in Bucks county. The road, with its stations and substations, often took a zigzag direction to elude pursuit, or suit the convenience of the road agents."

Gary Roberts (Worldconnect):

"Richard was a lineal descendant of Thomas Lloyd, the inimate friend of Benjamin Franklin, and many years President of the Governor's Council and acting govenor of Pennsylvania. He was also a descendant of the Prestons of Patuxet, Md. His parental ancestors were also prominent in public affairs in Maryland and in Philadelphia. He came to Quakertown in 1818 as a teacher, and was associated with Thomas Lester in establishing a school there. He continued to teach until 1825, when he abandoned it on account of health, and acquired a tract of land just outside the borough, and established an extenisde pottery which he conducted until his death, where it was continued by his son. He was a member of the Richland Monthy Meeting and active in the anti-slavery movement, his house being one of the stations of the underground railroad through which several hundred runaway slaves passed to freedom. According to his own statement, after he had sent a large number of fugitives, those passed a period of several years, he began to keep a regular record of those passing through his station, and the number recorded exceeded 600 from that date until the Civil War. He erected a large stone dwelling on his farm in 1834, and it is said to have been the first building of any size to be erected in the Northern part of Bucks County without spirituous liquors being distributed among the workman.

Children of SARAH FOULKE and RICHARD MOORE are:

i. JOHN JACKSON MOORE, b. November 17, 1819, Quakertown, Pennsylvania; d. October 06, 1895, Quakertown, Pennsylvania; m. JANE WARNER; d. February 25, 1873.

Notes for JOHN JACKSON MOORE:

"He was associated with his father in the pottery business from early manhood for many years. He later engaged in business as a scrivener and conveyancer and filled of the office of Justice of the Pease in Quakertown for many years, doing a large amount of business. His integrity was help in high esteem by all who knew him, especially the Pennsylvania Germans of the neighborhood, who in many cases were quite willing to have him act in their behalf as an arbitrator of their business differences without recourse to law. He was an active member of the Richland Monthly Meetings."

He was the son of Edward, and the great-grandson of Jenkin Jenkin, the immigrant. He was born at Gwynedd, March 18, 1793, and died there February 5, 1867. He received instruction at the academy of Enoch Lewis, the eminent teacher and methematician at New Garden, Chester county; but he added to his opportunities of education a studious and intellectual habit, reading throughout his life, with intelligence and zest, upon an extensive range of subjects. Having been brought up in his father's store in Gwynedd, he engaged in mercantile business in Philadelphia (for some time on Second Street, opposite Christ Church with brother in law Knowles Lancaster), for fourteen years, with good success; but in 1830, upon the decease of his father, he returned to Gwynedd, and took the store, which he conducted nearly to the close of his life. He took a very active interest in public affairs, was for many years a director of the public schools, and was the candidate of his party (it being, however, in the minority for a long period), for the Legislature, etc. His promotion of the construction of the turnpike has already been mentioned. He was, besides, secretary for many years of the Bethlehem turnpike, a director of the Bank of Montgomery County, and of the Montgomery County Mutual Fire Insurance Company, etc.

Wikpedia article (August 2013): "William Parker Foulke (1816 - 1865) discovered the first full dinosaur skeleton in North America (Hadrosaurus foulkii, which means "Foulke's big lizard") in Haddonfield, New Jersey in 1858. A descendant of Welsh Quakers who had emigrated in 1698, William Parker Foulke was an abolitionist, prison reformer, pamphleteer, philanthropist, lawyer, historian and geologist, the last of which directly led to the discovery, which was partially named for him by Joseph Leidy and for which he is now best-known. Foulke was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1841, though the law could hardly be said to be his life's work. Four years later he began an association with the two reforms that would occupy so much time and energy in his short life. Sensitized to the problems of incarceration through his legal training, Foulke joined the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries in Public Prisons in July 1845. Foulke spent several years comparing alternative disciplinary models and writing on correctional issues in the Journal on Prison Discipline and Philanthropy. Following a tour of mid-Atlantic correctional institutions in 1847 and 1848, Foulke was instrumental in erecting the new Lancaster County Prison, and contributed materially to later penitentiaries in several other counties in Pennsylvania. He was associated with the American Association for Improvement of Prison Discipline and the Convention of State Prison Wardens. Foulke also supported the Pennsylvania Colonization Society, an antislavery organization that resettled as many as 1,000 freed slaves per year in West Africa (Liberia). Despite mounting opposition from different sides, Foulke never wavered in his support for resettlement until his own death in 1865, by which time he was Vice-President of the Society. Foulke financially supported the American Academy of Music, and was a member of the Academy of Natural Sciences (Philadelphia), the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and, like his grandfather John Foulke (1757-–1796), the American Philosophical Society. He was an avid natural historian and geologist, supportive of the first arctic explorations. In 1855, Foulke married Julia DeVeaux Powel (d. 1884), daughter of Col. John Hare Powel, with whom he had seven children. He died on June 18, 1865."

William Parker Foulke's wife Julia provided Howard Jenkins with Edward Foulke's narrative of his removal from Wales and an Evans genealogy. The children of William Parker Foulke and Julia D. Powel were Julia Catherine Foulke (b. 22 Jan 1856, m. Henry C. Lewis), William D. Foulke (b. 9 June 1857), Richard P. Foulke (b. 30 Aug 1858), Lisa D. Foulke (b. 8 Mar 1860, m. Thomas Parker), John Francis Foulke (b. 26 Nov 1861), Sarah Gwendolen Foulke (b. 26 June 1863, m. Athan Andrew), and George Rhyfedd Foulke (b. 16 Aug 1865, m. Jean D. Kane, whose daughter Jean Foulke married Eleuthere Paul DuPont (1887-1950.))
