JONES and JOHN family histories at Gwynedd Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Pennsylvania)

by James A. Quinn, Historian, Gwynedd Friends Meeting. Page created March, 2009. Last updated May 2012.

This page is a clearing house for the name Jones in the eighteenth century at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. There were 19 or more unrelated families with this name found in the minutes of the Monthly Meeting. The monthly meeting at that time included Gwynedd, Plymouth and Providence Meetings. For a while Richland (became its own monthly meeting in 1742) and Exeter (MM formed 1737) were also part of this Monthly Meeting.

Assumptions made in compiling genealogies: At this point, the genealogies here have been constructed using will abstracts, tax lists, census data and especially the Quaker records. The author of this web page assumes that the previous genealogies of Howard Jenkins (Historical Collections of Gwynedd), Thomas Allen Glenn (Merion in the Welsh Tract, Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania), Charles Henry Browning (Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania), and Clarence V. Roberts (Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks [Warren S. Ely coauthor] and, Ancestry of Clarence V. Roberts & Frances A. (Walton) Roberts) are correct unless the records prove otherwise, however, these Jones families are, with the exception of lines 3, 6 and 16, not well covered by any of these books. We have tried not to use the LDS sources or Worldconnect unless they have impeccable sources (the Alice D. Gedge database, for instance, is quite good).

2. William John of Gwynedd MM, son of John ap Evan of Penmaen.

He is described on a separate web page. His ancestry is found on yet another web page, under his grandfather, Evan Robert Lewis. The half brother of William John, named Griffith John (of Merion) is covered on our Griffith web page, as his descendants at Gwynedd took the last name Griffith, not Jones.

3. Descendants of Rees John William, including John Jones, Carpenter

John Jones was a son of Rees John William, alias Rees Jones. Robert John (d. 1732) is now thought to be a nephew of Rees John William. A long quote from Browning on Rees Jones follows (I doubt if I could improve upon it, and he is the authority for this family, as of now).

Charles Henry Browning (Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania) pps 131-6:

"REES JOHN WILLIAM of Llanglynin, yeoman, or Rees Joans or Jones, was one of the seventeen original purchasers of land" in Merion township "by deed of 1 April 1682 through Thomas & Jones, but he did not come over till in 1684 when the land on the river was partly cleared and planted and the 'first come overs', the parties of Dr. Jones and Hugh Roberts, were well housed on their purchases. He found the land (his deed being recorded at Philadelphia 21 4mo 1684) allotted to him the worst proportioned in the tract, it being a narrow strip, only about 66 feet, on the river extending the full length of the other lots, to the Charles Lloyd land, where it was only about 264 feet wide, in all. here 76 1/2 acres, and remainder in Goshen twp.

'Rees Jones' as he was generally known, was a son of John ap William, a farmer in Llangelynin parish, Merioneth, who suffered considerable with the other Quakers in his neighborhood, 1661, &c. Rees came over with a large party of Welsh settlers in the ship Vine, of Liverpool, sailing from Dolyserre, near Dolgules, in Merionethshire, which is a maritime county, and arrived at Philadelphia on 17 7mo 1684. He was accompanied by his wife and three children.

His sister Margaret John William of Llangyllynin, widow, had preceded him, coming over in the party of Hugh Roberts, bringing a certificate of membership from the Quarterly Meeting near Dolgelly dated 27 5mo 1683, recorded at the Haverford or Radnor Monthly Meeting, As Margaret John she had patent 18 1mo 1717/8 for 400 acres of land on a branch of French Creek.

His brother, Evan John William, or Evan Jones also came over at that time, with his son, Robert Jones, (who resided at Gwynedd) and Evan John William died soon after, being buried in the ground of the Merion Meeting in 11mo 1683. He bequeathed some land in Goshen twp to his nephews, Richard and Evan Jones. Evan Jones, and Hannah his wife, and Mary Ellis, his mother in law and Gemima. her other daughter, brought certificate undated from the Meeting held at Tyddier y Gareg in Garthgunfawr near Dolegelle, Merioneth, to the Haverford Monthly Meeting, signed by Humphrey John, Robert and Rowland Owen, Owen Robert and Howell Lewis, and Hugh Rowland.

Rees Jones and his wife, Hannah, also brought the usual certificate of membership and removal, from the Quarterly Meeting near Dolgelly, dated 4 2mo 1684. Rees was described as 'of Llwyn Grevill, Clynn parish, Merioneth.

Before coming over he purchased by deed, dated 16 July 1684, the original right of Thomas ap Richard, or Prichard, of Nant Lleidiog to his share 156 1/4 acres of the Thomas & Jones tract. The 76 1/2 acres of which that lay in Merion adjoined the back part of Rees's land, and this gave him 153 acres in Merion. The present settlement of Merion. or Merion Station on Pensylvania Railroad, is on his land, and Rees's dwelling house was near it. By deed of 8 4mo. 1694, he sold his 76 1/2 acres on the river end, or his original purchase, to his brother in law, Cadwalader Morgan, whose land adjoined.

Rees Jones died 26 11mo. 1697/8, and was buried at the Merion Meeting House. His will which he signed with his mark, dated 24 11mo 1697/8, witnessed by Griffith John and Abel Thomas, was proved at Philadelphia, 4 March 1702/3. He named his sons Richard Evan and John; and overseers: Cadwalader Morgan, Abel Thomas, Edward Jones, Griffith John, and John Roberts.

He married, about 1678, Hannah Richards or Price, born in 1656, sister to Jane, wife of Cadwalader Morgan, of Merion, and to Edward Price, who came to Pensylvania before 1685-6, and daughter of Richard Gryffyth ap Rhys, or Prees, and Price, of Llanvawr or Lanfor parish in Merioneth, a member of the Friends Penylln Monthly Meeting, near Bala, whose will dated 26 11mo 1685, was filed at St Asaph registry in 1686. His will describes him as of Glanlloidiogin. Llanfor parish. Witnesses were Edward Nicholas, Thomas ap Robert, Lowry v Thomas, Rees Evans, and Cadwalader Ellis. To Edward Prees, alias Price (of Merion), eldest son; (after he came over here he sent to Wales for 'some intelligence of his Pedigree' which he received about 1700, and is extant); Jane, eldest daughter, wife of Cadwalader Morgan; daughter Hannah, wife of Rees John William; grandchildren William John, and Catherine John, children of John William; and son Thomas ap Richard, the executor, who received all of the estate of his father. Thomas renounced the trust, when the Court gave the administration to Edward Nicholas, of Cynlas.

After Rees's death, Hannah, his relict, married secondly, at the Merion Meeting, on 22 2mo 1703, Ellis David, of Goshen twp, a widower, who was buried sp 17 lmo 1720, and married, thirdly, 14, l mo 1722, Thomas Evans of Gwynedd twp. " (end of long quote from Browning)

Note: There is also a considerable account of Rees John William and his children in the Lloyd Manuscripts, (Welsh Records from the Collections of Howard Williams Lloyd, New Era Publishing, Lancaster, PA, [1912]), starting on page 165. Also, Thomas Allen Glenn has a Chapter on Rees John William, pps 73-86. in Merion in the Welsh Tract, which is likely the source for much of what Browning wrote. Furthermore, Thomas Allen Glenn, has much to say about the ancestry of Hannah Price, the wife of Rees John William on pages 92-97 of the same book.

Rees Jones, had by his wife, Hannah Price, who was of Royal Descent, the following issue, besides Margaret, b. 20. 6. 1697, Edward, and Catharine, who d. unmarried.

1. Richard Jones, born about 1679. He came over with his parents, and according to the records, filed with the Merion Preparative Meeting, of which he was a member an account of their ancestry, and life in the Old Country, on 2 12 mo. 1704-5. He inherited from his father the home-farm of about 100 acres, which he increased to 156 1/4 acres, and with some land he owned in Goshen, he had 293 3/4 acres altogether, in 1703. By deed of 8 Nov. 1720, he bought of John Roberts (the nephew of Thomas Lloyd, of Llangower, own of the original purchasers through Thomas & Jones), 39 1/2 acres, adjoining his Merion land.

By deed, dated 26 June 1729, Richard Jones conveyed all of his Merion land, then 156 1/4 acres, to Hugh Evans and removed to his land in Goshen twp, which he had increased by purchase. He and his brother Evan Jones bought there a tract of 153 1/ 4 acres, which on resurvey, was 178 acres. He died, aged 92 years, in Goshen twp on 16 7mo 1771, having been twice married.

Children of Richard Jones and Jane Evans (She married Richard Jones and she died 27. 2mo. 1711 and was buried at Merion Meeting House). Wit: Evan, John Gainor and Sarah Jones; Thomas, Anne, Lowry, Robert, Hugh, Evan and Lowry Evan, etc. (Haverford MM records). The list of witnesses named Evans suggest she is an unattributed daughter of Thomas Evans and Anne of Gwynedd (and later Goshen) as the other Evans names are the names of Thomas' children.

a) Ann Jones b. 11-11-1707, m. September 12, 1729, Thomas Goodwin (b. about 1694 - d. April 1775)

"Thomas Goodwin, was a native of Wales, and resided in Llandewy, Merionethshire, from which place he emigrated to the United States during the early settlement of Pennsylvania, and settled at Edgemont, in what is now Delaware county, Pennsylvania, on property since occupied by Everard Passmore, becoming the founder of the Goodwin family of this section. He was originally a minister of the church of England, but became a Friend and was unfrocked about the time of his settlement here. His son, Thomas Goodwin, married Ann Jones, also of Welsh descent, and a daughter of Richard Jones, of Goshen township..." (Biographical Sketch of Samuel Rhoads DOWNING (1893); Chester County, PA, Contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by John Morris)

b) Rees Jones m. Amy Cock (d/o Henry)

There are some notes on this line HERE. We suspect Rees' son Evan married Jane Williams (d/o Ellis & Lydia (Haines) Williams). We suspect that the Norris who appears later in the Gwynedd minutes is a son of Evan & Jane. This line is of Goshen Meeting, so beyond the scope of this description of Jones of Gwynedd.

4. Jane Jones m. David Davis

Information below on Jane is from Worldconnect, etc., so take with a grain of salt as I do not have the sources. Browning says she married David Davies, had 9 children, 4 of whom married into the Ashbridge family.

David Davis was an early member of Great Valley Presbyterian Church, founded in 1714 in Tredyffrin township. He later was an early settler of Uwchlan township.

Browning says, "John Jones, born in Merion, 6. 4mo. 1688, died in Goshen twp. 30. 12 mo. 1774. He married at the Gwynedd Meeting, 9. 4mo. 1713, Jane Edward, and had ten chldren. He and brother Evan shared the lands of their father.

We have previously written about him on our Griffith web page (Jane Edward is the daughter of Edward Griffith, who in turn is a son of Griffith ap Evan of Ucheldre, Wales).

Howard Jenkins also had a brief description of this family which can be found HERE. Note that Jenkins wrote before Thomas Allen Glenn and Charles Henry Browning and is sometimes corrected by the later writers.

6. Sarah Jones m. (1) Jacob Edge of Nether Providence (son of John Edge and Jane Evans), Chester Co., and (2) Caleb Cowpland.

Browning says, "Sarah Jones, born 25. 7mo., 1690, d. 28, 3mo., 1758. She married, first, at merion Meeting, 2. 8mo. 1712, Jacob Edge, 1690-1720, and had four children, and married secondly, 10. 11mo. 1721, Caleb Cowpland, d. at Chester, 1757, and had five children by him.

Names of Children with Jacob Edge: Hannah, Jane (m. Thomas Parke), Abigail and Sarah Edge.

Names of Children with Caleb Cowpland: David, Jonathan, Agnes, Caleb and Grace Cowpland.

7. Margaret Jones m. (1) Thomas Paschall and (2) George Ashbridge (sister Jane's children above marry his children by his first wife).

4. David Jones (of Gwynedd Township) m. Lowry Robert

His family is detailed on a separate web page. It appears that Ann Jones who married 1707/8, William Roberts of Worcester, is David's sister (see same separate web page).

5. David Jones (of Blockley township) m. Katherine James with descendants in Montgomery twp

This is one of four men named David Jones who are associated with Gwynedd Meeting in the first generation after its founding (see #4, #8 and #9 for the others) . The descendants of his son Isaac made up one of the two large Jones families of Montgomery Township (John Jones, Carpenter was the ancestor of the other one).

Thomas Allen Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania):

"David Jones, of Citalgarth, par. of Llanfor son of John David, of same place. Removed to Blockley, PA 1699. He was a Friend. Will Book D. 1725. (see pedigree)

Harvey, A.M.(Elizabeth Hanebury transcriber) under 1725 (David Jones was buried at Merion Meeting on 6 Mo. 27, 1725.) The David Jones homestead stood near what is now the corner of Sixty-Second Street and Lancaster Avenue, Philadelphia (Old Blockley Township.)

Charles Browning also covers this family: "David Jones removed from Wales with his wife Katherine and two children, about 1700, and bought 350 acres of land, located in Blockley tp., at Haverford road and 63d street. His sister, Ellen Jones, m. Robert Jones, of Merion, a son of John ap Thomas, the associate of Dr. Jones. He was a prominent Friend in both countries. The Friends' minister, William Edmundson, in his Journal (printed), mentions him. 7. Isaac Jones m. Elizabeth Lewis

Howard Jenkins (1897) Historical Collections of Gwynedd

"Isaac Jones came to Montgomery while quite a young man. He was the son of David and Katherine Jones, who came from Wales in 1699, and settled at Merion. Isaac was born 7th mo. 5, 1708, and married 1728, Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of George, she being eighteen and he twenty. Notwithstanding this early marriage, they "lived happily together" for seventy years. Old George Lewis, it is said, made an agreement with them a few years before his death, by which he gave them a life right in his real estate, in return for food and clothes, a room in his house, the use of a riding-horse, and two barrels of cider a year. He reserved the right to cook for himself, if he preferred, in which case they were to pay him 12 pounds a year, in lieu of the "diet".

Isaac Jones had purchased, in 1746, some land of Thomas Lewis, jr. On this he built, in 1765, a large brick house, which stood for more than a century. In it, in 1798, he died, past the age of ninety, and his wife, surviving two years, attained an equal age. Their son Isaac married Gainor Ambler (daughter of Ann Foulke), and this couple also died in the old house, after a married life of nearly seventy years, --Isaac, in 1840, aged 93, and Gainor, June 20, 1847, in her 92d year. Isaac's sister Ruth, who had lived there all her life, died in the same house, at the age of 88; and Mary Roberts, daughter of Eldad, who made her home with the Joneses, died there also, in 1859, aged nearly 93. This house, which was pulled down some years ago, stood in the extreme south corner of the township, on a cross road from the turnpike to the Horsham road."

8. Ellin Jones

She married (1) Aubrey Roberts of Gwynedd and (2) Rees Harry of Gwynedd (click on links).

6. Robert John of Gwynedd (d. 1732) and his father Evan John William

Thomas Allen Glenn (Merion in the Welsh Tract, p. 73): "Evan John was probably the oldest son; he died soon after arriving in the colony. The record of his burial in Merion Meeting book is as follows: 'Evan John William abt the 10th of the eleventh month 1683.' He left a son, Robert John or Jones, who was identified with Gwynedd." This is from the section of this book devoted to Rees John William, whom Glenn names as Evan John William's brother.

Charles Henry Browning (Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania) pps 131-6 and Margaret Harvey agree with Glenn:

Evan John William, or Evan Jones also came over 1683, with his son, Robert Jones, (who resided at Gwynedd) and Evan John William died soon after, being buried in the ground of the Merion Meeting in 11mo 1683. He bequeathed some land in Goshen township to his nephews, Richard and Evan Jones. [Browning goes on to say "This nephew, Evan Jones, and Hannah his wife, and Mary Ellis, his mother in law and Gemima, her other daughter, brought certificate undated from the Meeting held at Tyddier y Gareg in Garthgunfawr near Dolegelle, Merioneth, to the Haverford Monthly Meeting, signed by Humphrey John, Robert and Rowland Owen, Owen Robert and Howell Lewis, and Hugh Rowland." However he has the wrong Evan Jones here as Evan Jones, son of Rees John William dies unmarried and leaves a will naming his brothers and sisters. -JQ]

Evan John William is also briefly covered in The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA) Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, A.M (transcribed by Elizabeth Hanebury). She names Robert John of Gwynedd a son of Evan John William by an unnamed daughter of Evan ap Evan. She describes the pedigree of Evan John William: "Evan and Rees John William were sons of John William, son of William ap Humphrey of Wales. This John William was born about 1590, and was living 1661. He had three children, Evan John, Rees John and Margareth John William. Margaret's certificate of removal, dated 5 Mo. 27, 1683, is recorded at Radnor.".

The will of Evan John William does not seem to be among the will abstracts for Philadelphia County and I am not certain how Glenn determined Robert John of Gwynedd was his son. The legacy to the nephews was reconstructed from deeds (Welsh Settlement of Pennsylvania, by Browning, page 56.) There is a suspicion on my part that Browning and Harvey have assigned Robert John to Evan John William solely on the basis of Glenn's comment in Merion in the Welsh Tract.

Thomas Allen Glenn (Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania):

"Robert Jones (or John), of par. of Llanfor, co. Mer.; s. John __ (d. before 1698) and Ellin, dau. of Evan Lloyd Evan (otherwise Evan ap Evan), of Ucheldre. Rmd. to Gwynedd, Penna. 1698. (See pedigree ii). He was a Magistrate at Gwynedd for many years. Wife, Gaynor Lloyd, of Merion, widow, married 1706."

Glenn also states Howard Jenkins and Lloyd are wrong about his identity, though he does not assign him to Evan John William like Browning. There is additional discussion of this HERE.

Gainor Jones (previously married to a Lloyd), the wife of Robert John is mentioned frequently in the women's minutes after her marriage, being asked to go to Quarterly Meeting and overseeing marriages of Friends (see abstracts of the minutes).

From Howard Jenkins' Historical Collections of Gwynedd:

Robert John was one of the original settlers of Gwynedd, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania in 1698. He bought 500 (actually 720) acres for 32 pounds, 10 shillings. His land was most of the present North Wales borough.

Robert John, who died in Gwynedd, in 1732, from the inventory of his personal estate was probably the wealthiest citizen of the township. The list shows several articles indicating refinement and even some degree of luxury. Included in it are the following, valued as stated:

Item pounds.shillings.d. Item pounds.shillings.d.

6 cane chairs 4.0.0 14 Flag bottom chairs 1.1.0

2 Small walnut tables 2.10.0 6 candlesticks, 2 flesh forks 0.15.0

Window curtains 0.3.0 Smoothing-box and heater 0.5.0

5 dozen glass bottles 0.15.0 Pewters 3.16.0

Chyney ware and glasses on mantel piece 0.16.0 4 Brass pans 4.7.0

3 Brass candlesticks 0.9.0 2 pairs scales and weights 0.12.0

Money scales and weights and little box 0.6.0 25 yards of lincy woocy 2.15.0

2 Great spinning wheels 0.12.0

2 Little wheels 0.15.0

The quantity of furniture shown above was unusually large. No other Gwynedd inventory of that time, that I have examined, shows so much.

In Robert John's, 1732: "The time of 5 bound servants, 50 pounds."

Of Robert John, who owned the tract next below Evan ap Hugh, we know considerable from the records. He was one of the richest of the first settlers, as is indicated by the character and extent of the inventory of his personal property at the time of his death, in 1732. My impression is that he had been in Merion, before 1698, and that he came from there to Gwynedd. He was, it appears by his will, a nephew of Thomas Evans, and of Cadwallader Evans, [and] my cousins Evan Evans, Owen Evans [the sons of Thomas], John Jones, carpenter, and John Evans" [son of Cadwallader], to be overseers of his will. The relationships disclosed in this lead to the conjecture that Robert John was the son of Evan John, of Merion, who was brother to Reese John, and that Evan John's wife was the sister of the four Evans brothers. In this way Robert would be first cousin to John Jones, carpenter (son of Reese John), and to the sons of Thomas and Cadwallader Evans.

We know, further, that Robert John, of Gwynedd, married, in 1706, Gainor Lloyd, of Merion, widow, and that, at his death, in 1732, he left two children, John and Ellin. The records of Gwynedd meeting show:

1. John, b. 5th mo. 8th, 1707.

2. Ellin, b. 4th mo. 19th, 1709.

In his will, Robert John (now calling himself Jones) appoints his widow and his son John executors. He gives John "the plantation I now live on," containing 300 acres, and also "all that part of the tract of land lately bought of Cadwallader Foulke, which lyeth the east side of the great road, containing by estimation about 185 acres" with its buildings and appurtenances. To Ellin he leaves the remainder of the Cadwallader Foulke tract, "being divided from the other part by the great road, containing 150 acres." He also gives Ellin "one case and drawers, and the table belonging to the same, both standing in the new house chamber."

Robert John, in the deed to him, by Cadwallader Foulke, is called "gentleman". He was a justice of the peace for many years, and was a member of the Provincial Assembly, --altogether a useful and excellent citizen.

Note (JQ): Since Enos Jones has left for Virginia with his son by that name, I am not sure this man is in any way connected with the Robert Jones m. Anne Coulston line. This could be the Enos Jones who married in 1779 Elizabeth Potts of Tredyffrin or some other unknown Enos Jones.

There are two documented discussions of Enos Jones on-line, one on Worldconnect, and one on Genforum.

9. David Jones of Plymouth twp. and Conshohocken

From Margo Pomeroy's Worldconnect database (she does not list her source):

"THE JONES FAMILY, more numerous than any other among the membership of Plymouth Meeting, are the descendants of David Jones, who came from Haverford in Wales, and purchased a large tract of land in the vicinity. A considerable part of the land now included in the borough of Conshohocken was owned by the family for several generations. David Jones came to Pennsylvania, with his family, in the year 1700, about which time there appears to have been so large an emigration of Welsh Friends to this section of the Province. David Jones brought with him to Pennsylvania the following certificate from the meeting to which he belonged in Wales. From the men's meeting in Haverford west, Pembrokeshire Wales. 4th day of first month 1699/1700. Whereas, our tender and well beloved friend David Jones and his wife and children intends to remove themselves for the province of Pennsylvanie. These are to certify whom it may comcern, we have a dear and tender love for them, and truly desire their welfare. We certify that we believe them to be clear of debts or encumbrances, the want of which has made truth suffer in many places in this nation. Witness James Lewis Andrew LlewellynThos Merchant Henry Smith Pergryn Musgrave Arthur Reaves Pierce Worte

This was Recorded at Radnor 5, 8, 1700. David Jones first bought a piece of land in Conestoga Twp. on the Susquehannah River, now Martic Twp., Lancaster Co. at the mouth of the Pequea Creek. This land was willed to his son John who then sold it and bought the land in Montgomery Co. that Conshohocken is on today."

Gwynedd MM: 190-3. 1775-2-28. David Jones married contrary to discipline (deceased before case was settled)

He had a child named David, possibly posthumously. The authority for this is a greatgrandson named William Foster Jones in information given to a cousin (Abigail Conrad Jones Cranor, later transcribed by Katherine Eastwick Jones Muckle) in January of 1899 which she wrote down in a notebook. This son David was known as David Jones, "Hatter" of Philadelphia (he was indentured at age 16 to a hatter) and he married Rebecca Foster on Sept. 3, 1797. David and Rebecca had children: Letitia (1798-1872), Rachel (b. 1801), Sarah (1805-1877), David Powell (1809-1891), Josiah Foster (1813-1815) and William Foster Jones (1817-1873). This line is covered separately HERE.

12. Children of John Cadwalader of Wales (step-children of John Humphrey of Gwynedd)

Cadwalader Jones' marriage certificate names his father as John Cadwalader, deceased of Llanfawr. In addition, the name on the marriage certificates where the mother would most likely sign is Gainor. For instance, the marriage of daughter Jane Jones: "Whereas Evan Griffith second son of Griffith John of Meirion in the County of Philadelphia and Jane Jones step daughter of John Humphrey of Gwynedd in the aforesaid county having declared their intentions of Marriage" etc. "this 29 day of the 3d mo.: 1707" etc. Witnesses: Men sign below the bride and groom: Griffith John, Jno Humphrey, Wm John, Edd ffoulke, Jno Griffith, Caddr Jones, Hugh Jones, Tho: Jones, Hum: Jones, Tho: Evan, Hugh Griffith and Robt Evan; Women sign in column to left of the men: Gaenor Humphrey, Anne Jones, Eliza: Jones, Ellin ffoulke, Cath: Jones, Grace Griffith, Anne Lewis, Ellin Jones, Eliza: Jones, Anne Pugh, Ellin Parry, Gainor Jones, Anne Evan, Sara Evan, Cath: Pugh, Ellin Griffith, Lowry Evan, Ellin Roberts. (Radnor MM records).

Thus, the genealogy looks like this:

1. Jane Jones m. Evan Griffith, son of Griffith John

d) Martha Jones most probably married Peter Lukens, the brother of the man who married her sister Rachel. This Peter Lukens (son of Joseph and Susannah (Marle) Lukens) left a will:

Will Abstracts 1808-1813: Will Book 3: Montgomery Co, PA; PETER LUKENS. Towamencin, February 22, 1811. Proved March 16, 1811. 3.296

Peter Lukens is on the 1769 Towamencin twp. tax list (87 acres, 3 horse, 4 cows)

His children: Jesse married Susannah Ambler; Susannah married Robert Iredell on December 25, 1781 at Gwynedd Friends Meeting; Jonathan removed to Virginia and married January 13, 1791 Lydia Fawcett at Mt. e) Jane Jones born 2 mo. (April)15, 1733.

Gwynedd MM 205-2. 1758-1-31. Jane Cadwallader Jones married contrary to discipline and offered an account. This is likely her - apparently she married someone who was not a Quaker...

3. Elizabeth Jones m. Thomas David

This line is covered separately HERE.

13. Children of John Humphrey of Gwynedd who took the last name Jones

This family is covered on a separate web page found HERE. John Humphrey had two sons, Humphrey Jones and Hugh Jones, both who married. Humphrey, at least, had children John, Cathrine, Jane (m. David Lawrence), Gainor, Humphrey, Elizabeth (m. Edward Evans) and Sibil Jones.

14. John Jones of Worcester twp., m. Elizabeth Roberts and other puzzling John Jones

John Jones married Elizabeth Roberts. Since she is known to have been born in 1707, we presume the marriage occurred in the 1726-1730 time frame. There is no record of this marriage in the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting minutes, so it is suspected that John Jones is one of the persons of that name who married out of unity, or was disowned by Gwynedd Meeting.

The children of John and Elizabeth Jones are found in the will of Elizabeth's father, John Roberts:

Howard Jenkins

"John Roberts, of Montgomery, son of Robert Cadwalader, b. abt 1677, d. 1773, immigrated, from Wales, with his parents. He settled first in Oxford twp., Philadelphia, and while there m. 6th mo. 7, 1706, Elizabeth Edward, of Merion. He subsequently removed to Montgomery, and his name is attached in 1711, to a petition of Gwynedd and Montgomery residents for the legal settling of the route of a road to the mills on Pennypack. His will, dated 5th mo. 15, 1763, was proved Sept 30, 1773."

Philadelphia County Will Book P, page 308

Elizabeth (Roberts) Jones and her brother John Roberts (m. Ellin Williams and Jane Hank) are the only living heirs to her father. Her father mentions all her chldren (Mordecai, Jane [m. John McKinley], John, Evan, Margaret, Ellen & Ann) Jones.

John Jones with will in Worcester twp.

There are no John Jones in Worcester twp. in the 1734 Philadelphia tax list, but there are three of them in Gwynedd township:

John Jones, penman (the son of William John was born at "Penmaen", Wales)
John Jones, Robert's son
John Jones, weaver (presumably transferrred to Gwynedd from another Meeting)

Will abstract of JOHN JONES. Worcester, County of Philadelphia. February 24, 1747/8. Proved April 6, 1748. Philadelphia County Will Book G.231.
Wife: Elizabeth. Children: Mordecai and John.
Exec: Elizabeth and Mordecai Jones.
Wit: John Roberts, William Fox (his mark) and Robt. Woodman.

Besides John and Mordecai, we suspect that the granddaughters named Jones in the will of John Roberts above are the children of this John Jones as well: Jane (m. John McKinley), Margaret, Elinor, and Ann and also had a son Evan Jones mentioned as a grandson in the same will.

Elizabeth Roberts Jones, after the death of John Jones in 1748, married second, John Blair, by whom she had Jonathan Blair.

More can be found about his wife, Elizabeth Roberts, on the roberts.htm web page.

14a. The other John Jones in Gwynedd

Of the John Jones in the 1734 Gwynedd twp. tax list, one might be the man just described, and a second is the son of Robert John (LINE 6) . The other unidentified John Jones in the Gwynedd records also left a will (and apparently no children):

JOHN JONES. Philadelphia County. 12 mo. 1, 1739. January 16, 1746. H.201.
Cousins: Rees Price, David Evans, Margaret Evans, Rees Harry and Mary Harry.
Sister: Mary (surname not given).
Exec: Rees Harry.
Wit: Hugh Jones and John Evans.

Since Rees Harry (m. Mary Price) is the son in law of Rees Price, it appears this John Jones is closely connected somehow to Rees Price's family. Rees Price died 1760 in Merion, and left a will:

PRICE, REESE. Merion, Province of Penna. Yeoman. February 29, 1760. Proved May 12, 1760. Philadelphia County Will Book L.443.

Children: John, Edward, Mary Harry, Ellis, Margaret Paschall, Jane and Ellias.

Wit: Robert Roberts, John Roberts, John Roberts [carpenter].

John Jones in the Gwynedd Monthly Meeting Records of this period.

We can identify the records that belong to John Jones carpenter (LINE 3) easily enough, but the other John Jones create a puzzle.

16. Descendants of Dr. Edward Jones of Merioneth, Merion and Goshen at Gwynedd MM

Some descendants of Dr. Jones married into the Foulke family as follows:

Jane Jones married Caleb Foulke, son of Wm Foulke and Hannah Jones (Family 3 above, Hannah a granddaughter of Rees John William, via John Jones, "carpenter")

Hannah Jones married Amos Foulke, also a son of Wm Foulke and Hannah Jones

Jane and Hannah Jones were daughters of Owen Jones, last colonial Treasurer of Pennsylvania, and his wife Susannah Evans (Susannah, the daughter of Hugh Evans and Lowry Jones - a daughter of Rees John William, thus also family 3 above). Other children of Owen Jones included Owen Jones, Jr., (who was one of the 20 Quakers transported without trial to Winchester, Virginia during the Revolution under suspicion of being a Tory sympathizer) and Lowry Jones who married Thomas Wister, and was the mother of Sally Wister, the journal writer.

Owen Jones was the son of Jonathan Jones and Gainor Owen (Gainor Owen the daughter of Robert Owen, a descendant of Evan Robert Lewis, and a first cousin of William John - family 2 above). Owen Jones was born 1711 in Merion twp and died 1793, during the Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia.

Jonathan Jones was the son of Dr. Edward Jones, and his wife Mary Wynne (Mary the daughter of Thomas Wynne of Wynnewood and Martha Buttall)..

Dr. Edward Jones, surgeon, Justice of the Peace, and member of the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania, was born near Bala, Merioneth, Wales and died in Goshen Twp., Chester Co., PA. He is buried at Merion Meeting. Edward Jones was the son of John Lloyd of Of Vaynol, St. Asaph, Wales. Another daughter of his named Martha married John Cadwalader, founder of the Cadwalader family of Merion, whose mother was Ellin Owen, another descendant of Evan Robert Lewis. More can be found out about Edward Jones HERE. There is a large collection of family papers at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.

17. Hugh Jones alias Hugh John Thomas, of Of Nantleidog, Penllyn, Merionethshire, Wales and Plymouth twp., PA

HUGH JONES aka Hugh John or Hugh John Ap Thomas was born Abt. 1645 in Of Nantleidog, Penllyn, Merionethshire, Wales, and died March 1727/28 in Plymouth twp., Philadelphia Co., PA. He married (2) MARGARET DAVID July 16, 1686 in Radnor MH, Chester Co., PA. He married (3) ANN WILLIAMS January 18, 1693/94 in Radnor MH, Chester Co., PA, daughter of WILLIAM PUGH. She was born Abt. 1675, and died 1700 in Plymouth twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA. He married (4) MARGARET PUGH November 22, 1703 in Merion MH, Philadelphia Co., PA.

(Welsh Founders of Pennsylvania - T.A. Glenn):

Hugh John Thomas of Nant-lleidiog, Parish of Llanvawr (Llanfor) commonly known as Hugh Jones, and probably a passenger on the ship "Morning Star", settled upon the tract allotted to him soon after his arrival in Merion. He obtained a patent for his land November 8, 1703, the resurvey making the area 92 acres. Hugh Jones removed to Plymouth, and by deed dated Jan 19 1707/8, in which his son-in-law Rowland Richard joined, he conveyed his Merion plantation to Cadwalader Morgan. Hugh Jones sold his 78 acres in Goshen to John Roberts, of Pencoyd, as before related.

(Merion in the Welsh Tract, p. 111, by Thomas Allen Glenn)

Hugh John, the purchaser of 156 1/4 acres of the Merion Company's land in 1682, is described as of Nantleidog, Penllyn, Merionethshire, yeoman. He was a fairly prosperous man, and a member of the Society of Friends. His land, near Mill Creek, ran to the Schuylkill River, and at one time he was engaged in milling. As we have seen his deed bore date of 18 March, 1682. He is also designated in various documents, Hugh John Thomas, which is to say, Hugh, the son of John Thomas, and Hugh Jones. Presuming Hugh John to have been born about 1655, his father, John Thomas, must have been born circa 1625. His wife may have come over with him, but if so she died soon after -- but no record remains concerning her. He married secondly in Merion, 5th mo. 16th, 1686, Margaret David, of Merion, who appears to have died soon after, for he married again 11th mo. 18th, 1693, Ann Williams, of Radnor, spinster, at Radnor Meeting, who died 1700. He then married, ninth month 22d, 1703, Margaret Edwards, of Merion; and having previously removed to Plymouth, after selling all his land in Merion, he died there in 1727, leaving issue: Hugh Jones, who died in Plymouth, 1739, unmarried, and Joseph Jones, born 4th mo. 12th, 1697, of whom nothing has been ascertained.

(The Incompleted Burial Records of Merion (PA) Meeting Grave-yard by Margaret B. Harvey, A.M. (Elizabeth Hanebury transcriber)

Ann Williams, the third wife was buried at Merion Meeting House 1700. Hugh Jones, lived, before removing to Plymouth, on Mill Creek in Lower Merion. Witnesses on his various marriages (then Haverford, now Radnor MM records):

(2) 5 Mo. 16, 1686. Hugh John Thomas of Merion and Margaret Davis of the same town at their public meeting place in said township of Merion. Wit; Robert and Elizabeth David; William Edward; Rowland Richards; Hugh Robert; Cadwallader Morgan etc.

(3) 11 Mo. 18, 1693, John Thomas of Merion, widow, and Ann Williams, of Radnor, spinster, witnesses: Hugh Williams, William Pugh, Rowland Richards, William Edward etc.

(4) 9 Mo. 22, 1703. Hugh Jones, of Plymouth, Phila. Co. widower, and Margaret Edward of Merion, widow, at Merion Meethig House. Wit: Edward, David, Cadwallader, Thomas and Mary Jones; Ann Edward; Hugh William etc.

Ellwood Roberts ("Plymouth Meeting Its Establishment, And The Settlement Of The Township", transcribed by Coralynn Brown on Ann Devlin's web site):

"It will be seen that Francis Rawle and James Fox must have been persons of some note and means to be at least the principal purchasers of the Plymouth tract, and undertake its improvement accompanied as they were by so many servants. The survey was made only three weeks after their arrival. There is no doubt they settled here immediately after the purchase, though published accounts have heretofore made it a year earlier, which the registry of arrivals proves to have been an error.

"After remaining several years and making considerable improvements, they became tired of their isolated life in the woods, and removed to Philadelphia, abandoning the settlement. In 1701 another survey was made of the whole tract, which was somewhat different from the former one. It was then mentioned as Plymouth township."

Some time after the removal to Philadelphia, James Fox died, and his widow, Elizabeth, in conjunction with Francis Rawle, the two being the principal owners of land in the township, proceeded to sell off several large tracts to various purchasers, the latter having been attracted by the fertility of the land and other advantages of the vicinity.

Arnong the newer arrivals were David Meredith, Thomas Owen, Isaac Price, Ellis Pugh, Hugh Jones and Edmund Cartlege, all of them, with others, from Wales, and all members of the Society of Friends. All these became settlers in the township, and their names frequently occur in connection with the Meeting records in the earlier years or the settlement. Many of the family names have entirely disappeared from the township.

It is certain that no meeting-house had been erected in 1703 for the records of Haverford show that the meeting was still held in the Fox dwelling which at that time had come into the possession of Hugh Jones. It remained there for several years longer, and was then held at the residence of a member of the Cartlege famIly, not far distant, for a time."

Under the date, Ninth month 12, 1702, the following entry appears in the Haverford MM records:

"Friends about plimouth of the other side skoolkill propose to have a meeting first-day at Hugh Jones for six months and to have a weekly meeting to be kept by course at Davd. Wms., at Hugh Jones, at Lewis Thomas, which this meeting consents to if the Quarterly Meeting approve thereof, and to be transmitted to them for their approbation."

iii. JOSEPH JONES, b. June 12, 1697, Merion twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA; d. 1781, Plymouth twp., Philadelphia (now Montgomery) Co., PA.

He appears to have been married three times (all in the Gwynedd MM records), but had no children (will mentions none):

This second marriage was to the widow of Isaac Morris of Whitemarsh, who had died the previous year. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary (Taylor) Lewis of Haverford twp. From her first marriage she brought four children, none older than 11, named Mary, Jonathan, Phoebe and David Morris.

This third marriage appears to be to the widow of John Bell (he died in Plymouth twp., 1773.) Hannah was the daughter of John and Hannah Rees of Whitpain twp.

1734 tax list, Plymouth twp. - Joseph Jones, 200 acres.

Joseph Jones must have been one of the "weightier" members of Plymouth Preparative and Gwynedd Monthly Meeting for on 26 1mo., 1745: "John Jones, Owen Evans, Job Pugh, Joseph Jones are appointed to sort offenders of the same sort or like offences and to form a Minute on Terstification against such, according to the Nature of their Offences, and bring the same to next Meeting for Approbation." This appears near the beginning of a period in which the men's minutes are weighed down with disciplinary measures which are thought to have greatly contributed to the decline of the numbers of Friends throughout America. He was also among those chosen as representative of Gwynedd Monthly Meeting to the Quarterly Meeting held in Philadelphia and appears to have acted as an overseer of Plymouth Preparative.

18. Descendants of John Jones of Barbadoes, Philadelphia and Warrington, Bucks in the Gwynedd MM Records

Gwynedd MM Records:

page 221-1. 1766-10-14. Isaac Jones Jr., son of Jno of Bucks Co., PA married Ann Ambler at Gwynedd Meeting House.

page 198-2. 1757-10-25. Thomas Jones received on certificate from Abington MM dated 7-?-1757.

2nd mo. 26, 1760. "Thomas Jones has purchased a slave, and he appearing in this meeting in a plyable frame of mind, expressed disposition of using him well if he should live; this meeting desires him to adhere to the Principle of doing unto others as he would be done unto, which will teach him how to use him in time to come." Slave ownership is quite consistent with the Barbadoes origin of this family. None of the Welsh families which founded Gwynedd Meeting owned slaves as far as can be ascertained, though they had many indentured servants with the single exception of Miles Evans.

190-3. 1775-2-28. Thomas Jones and wife disowned for disunity.

Isaac (and possibly Thomas, as well) is the son of John Jones (b. abt 1705, Philadelphia, he the son of John Jones, b. Barbadoes) and Rebecca Head (b. 1713/4, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, daughter of John Head and Rebecca Mace). Alternatively, Thomas is the son of Arthur Jones (LINE 19)

Pomona Hall, the mansion where the Camden Historical Society is housed, was once the home of Marmaduke and Mary, and the "MM" on the roof stands for Marmaduke and Mary.

Aquilla Jones Sr. married second, Elizabeth Cooper, daughter of Isaac Cooper, June 4, 1767, at Haddonfield MM, New Jersey. He and his wife removed from New Jersey to Philadelphia in 1791. He left a will:

20. Descendants of John Evans of Radnor (Evan Jones m. Lowry Evans and Edward Jones m. Sarah Evans)

John and Mary Evans "of Radnor" had two sons that appear in the Gwynedd records named Evan Jones and Edward Jones, who married daughters of Thomas Evans (1698 settler at Gwynedd). There is another John Evans (m. Delilah, and left a will 1707 in Radnor) who should not be confused with this man.

Here is the will abstract of the correct John Evans of Radnor

Philadelphia Co. will

The widow, Lowry (Evans) Jones remarried 1717/18 as shown in the Gwynedd records:  William Lewis of Newton, Chester Co. married Lowry Jones of Gwynedd, widow, at Gwynedd Meeting House, 1st mo 7, 1717/18. Wit. Thos. Evans, Lewis Lewis, Evan Lewis, Robert Evan, Hugh Evan, Evan Evans, Robert Evan, Jno Jones, Cadwalader Evan, Robert Robert, Owen Evans, Richard Jones (only men signed).

Gwynedd MM - abstract of marriage certificate (this is the first marriage certificate in Gwynedd's records):

Edward Jones son of John Evan late of Radnor, Chester Co. m. Sarah Evan d. Thomas of Gwynedd, August (6 mo.) 25, 1715 at Gwynedd MH.

Column 1 (Quaker overseers, ministers and elders). Griffith Owen, Ellis Pugh, Rowland Ellis, Rees Thomas, David Harry, Robert Jones, John Jones, Thomas Lloyd, Rowland Ellis Jr., Edward Griffith.

Column 2 (female relatives). Sarah Jones, Mary William, Sarah Owen, Jane Fletcher, Elizabeth Edward, Rebecka Rees, Jane Pugh, Catherine Williams, Jane Jones, Jane Evans, Gainor Lloyd, Susana Richard, Catherine William, Gwen ffoulke. A look at the relatives lists shows a relationship to Edward Rees (who had been named with Hugh William a guardian of John Evans' children): Thomas & Ann Evan = parents of bride. Mary Evan = mother of the groom (father John Evan is deceased). Edward Rees (s/o Richard ap Rhys, with long ancestry given in Merion in the Welsh Tract by Thomas Allen Glen, starting page 92) and his wife, Rebecka Rees, (nee Humphrey, d/o Samuel Humphrey). Hugh William (thought to be a son of . Robert (coincidentally, his wives are nieces of Edward Rees), Owen & Evan Evans, uncles of the bride. Richard Jones (son of Rees John William and Hannah Price. Hannah Price is a sister of Edward Rees), Richard Kenderdine married Sarah Evans (d/o Robert). Those in male column after Richard do not appear to be relatives. In female column, Sarah Jones (probably the sister mentioned in the father's will. Mary William, I supect the other sister in the will of John Evan of Radnor (Suspected not to be the wife of Hugh William, who seems to have married Susannah Griffith 1690 or 1693 in Radnor and later removes to Whitemarsh where he leaves a will 1727 naming wife Susannah). Elizabeth Edward. Rebecka Rees (daughter of Samuel Humphrey) wife of Edward Rees. Jane Pugh.

21. Amos Jones of West Point

This line fits somewhere, but I have not been able to discover where. Amos Jones (born in 1794 or 1795) was researched by Mike Simpson who is interested in the history of West Point. He put the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census pages on-line which can be seen by going to bottom of his page.

J. Spencer Jones, son of Amos Jones, is buried at Gwynedd Monthly Meeting with a GAR marker reading Pvt., Co. H, 200th PA, age 65 yrs, 3 mos, 13 days. His wife Martha L., is buried next to him.

He is in the 1880 census in Philadelphia, PA:
