Waking early, I catch the trail
of night. Its silky ink
dissipates by inches while I sip
black tea. By the time
I’m in the car,
a golden arboretum of light
is growing in the sky over the bridge.
A privilege a privilege
a privilege, I intone
to the turn signal’s tick,
to live in the see-saw center
of need and ease.
