I believe
there is always hope.
I believe the light shines
where it will and that
shadows never last.
I believe each day
breaks with the night
and that we are born
to do good:
to plant seeds, to sing
together, to partner,
to feed the hungry,
and to love one another.
When I stepped into
the recycling shed,
a bird flew past me
with a scrap of corrugated
cardboard in its beak:
the bird knows that a nest
spells H-O-P-E, that we
build hope piecemeal
piece by peace
weaving together
the bits and bobs
the world throws our way.
That our life is a puzzle,
that broken shards
reflect more light
than a smooth pane of glass.
