Young Friends Bookshelf
The following column includes a review that compares two recent books on the topic of prayer (Sparrow’s Prayer and When I Talk to God, I Talk About You). Meetings can use these titles to engage their youngest members in learning about and practicing prayer. A short religious education unit featuring these titles could begin with reading and discussing them with the children, followed by supplemental activities such as coloring pages and word puzzles (Friends General Conference offers free downloads on its website) or an exploration of different prayerful body poses. Perhaps children could be taught a simple grace, the Johnny Appleseed song, or the Lord’s Prayer. Teachers or other adults could share what prayer means to them, or a group craft project might be created and displayed to remind children about prayer. If you try out any of these ideas, let me know how it goes! —Eileen Redden, young Friends book review editor, yfbooksed@friendsjournal.org
