Records for Shoemaker at Gwynedd Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)(Pennsylvania)

compiled by James A. Quinn from the records held at the Friends Historical Library at Swarthmore College.

Compiled November, 2014. Please do not copy and paste this whole document to your web site. Instead link this page to yours. This will stop the propagation of errors, as we will correct them on this page as we find them. Page numbers are those from the Gwynedd Friends Meeting records. After the Hicksite/Orthodox split in 1828, the record books with the higher volume numbers are from the Orthodox Meeting and those with lower volume numbers are from the Hicksite records. Most of the members and the Meeting House became Hicksite.

Shoemaker pioneers: the early genealogy and history of the colonial Shoemaker families who came to America before the Revolution is a self published book written in 1975 by Benjamin H. Shoemaker. It is the best book on all lines of Shoemakers (not just the Arndt Schumacher lines). There is a copy in the library of the Montgomery County Historical Society in Norristown. This is an update of a similar book published by Benjamin Shoemaker in 1955 with a similar name.

Thomas Shoemaker (born about 1729) was an overseer at Gwynedd Friends Meeting. Before the battle of Germantown he was sent by Gwynedd Monthly Meeting to persuade young men not to fight in the Revolutionary War (because of Quaker pacifist principles.) Details from the Meeting minutes can be found HERE. Note that after the battle of Germantown, Thomas is not sent out to elder those participating on the American side while his home is being used as a convalescent home for officers.

During the Revolution Thomas Shoemaker's house was first plundered by Washington's army, then (thankfully) occupied by officers who kept the foragers away. This story is detailed in "The Philadelphia Campaign, Volume II, by Thomas J. McGuire who on pages 146-8 relates the story told by Thomas Shoemaker's son Abraham 70 years later. The troops took livestock and hay for the army without paying. However, this was stopped when three officers took residence at the house: Capt. Richard Taylor, father of President Zachary Taylor, Capt. William Cunningham and Capt. Francis Taylor all from Virginia and part of Greene's Corp. Thomas Shoemaker's house was located on the west corner of today's North Wales Road and Welsh Road (state road 63) in Upper Gwynedd township.

Notes for JOSEPH AMBLER SHOEMAKER:

Robert's Annals - http://files.usgwarchives.org/pa/montgomery/bios/robertsannals/roberts107.txt

Joseph A. Shoemaker was born in Gwynedd township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, May 13, 1826. He was educated in the Friends' school at Gwynedd, then a flourishing institution, and he remained in that vicinity until he attained his thirteenth year.
He then went to Philadelphia county, and at the age of sixteen years became an apprentice to the blacksmith trade at Bridesburg, continuing in the same line afterwards in Upper Dublin township, Montgomery county. After completing his term of apprenticeship he went to Broad Axe, Whitpain township, remaining there two years. He then took up his residence in the state of Illinois, where he followed his trade of blacksmith for a short time, and upon his return east engaged in dealing in cattle and horses, and subsequently for one year was the tenant of a farm in Horsham township. His next occupation was the management of a sawmill in the same locality, which he operated with a fair degree of success for three years.
In 1853 he located in Jenkintown, and engaged in the butchering business in partnership with his brother-in-law, George Logan. He prospered in this occupation, accumulating a sufficient competency to allow hint to retire from active pursuits in1885. He then erected a handsome residence on a small farm, where he has resided up to the present time, surrounded by every comfort and convenience, and where he is enjoying to the utmost a life of ease and luxury, which is a fitting climax to his many years of toil.
Among the positions of trust and responsibility to which he was appointed are the following: director in the Jenkintown National Bank, treasurer of the Philadelphia Droveyard, director of the Masonic Hall Association, and president of the North Cedar Hill Cemetery Company at Frankford, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Shoemaker is a thoroughgoing Republican, having supported the candidates and principles of that party from its organization to the present time, a period of more than fifty years, and having always been active in its behalf. He filled the position of councilman in Jenkintown for several years, and was president of the body for a time, devoting himself to the interests of the community in which he lives, as he has done in every office which he has held. He was the incumbent of the offices of assessor and assistant assessor, his good judgment and knowledge of real estate values standing him in good stead in these positions, and he also served repeatedly as an election officer. Owing to his prominence as a party worker he has frequently been a delegate to county and state conventions, and assisted in framing the party ticket which has been presented to the voters of the county and the commonwealth on different occasions.
In 1887 he was elected a member of the house of representatives at Harrisburg, and was re-elected by a handsome majority in 1889, serving two terms with great credit to himself and satisfaction to his constituents, in whose behalf he labored with industry, energy and fidelity.
He was a member of the committee of the house at the session of 1887, through whose instrumentality the splendid work, "The Birds of Pennsylvania," was printed and distributed to the members of the General Assembly, and through them to their constituents throughout the state. In the session of 1889 he was chairman of the committee on geological survey, a member of the committee on printing, and also of those on corporations, congressional apportionment, banks and banking, and the committee to compare bills. In his legislative career Mr. Shoemaker was ever the friend of the people, leaving nothing undone that was possible to promote prosperity and the general welfare. There is no kinder neighbor or friend than he and no one who is more ready to do a favor for those who are deserving. He is actively and prominently identified with various fraternal organizations, holding membership in the Masonic order, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, and the Order of American Mechanics.

"KERSEY SHOEMAKER, a successful farmer of West Whiteland township, and who has been engaged for many years in the coal and lime business, is a son of Thomas and Mary (Evans) Shoemaker, and was born in Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, December 16, 1815. His paternal grandfather, Peter Shoemaker, was a native and life-long resident of Montgomery county, where he followed his trade of stone mason in connection with farming. He was an old-line whig, and a member of the Society of Friends, and married and reared a family of ten children, among whom were John, Charles, Nathan, Peter, Hannah Moore, Rachel Meredith, and Thomas. Thomas Shoemaker, fourth son, and father of Kersey Shoemaker, was born in Whitemarsh township, Montgomery county, where he passed his life as a farmer, and where he died in 1856, aged seventy-two years. He was a whig, and a Friend, and married Mary Evans, who died January 3, 1876, when in the ninety-first year of her age. They were the parents of six children, two sons and four daughters: Kersey, Harrison, who died in 1862; Emma Paxson, now dead; Myra S. Moore, of Illinois; Mary and Sarah.

"Kersey Shoemaker was reared on the farm, and received his education in the old subscription schools of Montgomery and Chester counties. Leaving school he turned his attention to farming, and some years later engaged in his present coal and lime business. He burns large quantities of lime, which he ships to various parts of this State and New Jersey. He purchased his present farm of ninety acres in this county, which is fertile and well improved, has good buildings and fences, and lies convenient to market, church and school. Mr. Shoemaker has always resided within three miles of where he now lives, and is one of the substantial citizens of his township. He is a republican in political opinions, and a Friend in religious belief and church membership.

"On February 18, 1858, Mr. Shoemaker was united in marriage with Ann Eliza Ayars, and to their union have been born three children: Mary, who died in childhood; Emma, wife of Dr. Patrick, of West Chester; and Margaret. Mrs. Shoemaker is a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and received her education in Thomas' boarding school at Downingtown. She was born in Chester county, February 9, 1825, and is a granddaughter of Hamilton Ayars, who was a native of Bridgeton, New Jersey, and a resident and business man for many years of Philadelphia, where he died in 1833, at an advanced age. He was a democrat in politics, married and reared three children: Lemuel, Shepherd, and Mary McConaghy. Shepherd Ayars, father of Mrs. Shoemaker, was born at Bridgeton, New Jersey, June 19, 1789, and followed his trade of cabinet maker in Philadelphia and at Sadsburyville. He died at Downingtown in August, 1857. He was a democrat, an exhorter in the Methodist Episcopal church, and served as a soldier in the war of 1812. He married Mary Murray, and their children were: Preston, Hamilton, Addis, Mrs. Ann Eliza Shoemaker, Wesley, and Mrs. Sarah P. Mullen."

Notes for EZRA MICHENER:

Howard Jenkins:

Dr. Michener, as will be seen from the dates just given, lived to his ninety-third year. In this long life he was distinguished as a man of physical and mental activity. He maintained his home, from 1829 to his death, in New Garden, Chester county, Pa. He worked on the farm until twenty-one, and then studied medicine in Philadelphia. Of this he says, ("Autographical Notes ") : " The obstacles, indeed, seemed insurmountable. I . . had lived very much apart from the outside world, had only Been Philadelphia once, and that for three hours. Then there was little intercourse between the city and country. My cousins. Dr. David Jones Davis, and his sister Mary were the only persons whom I knew in the city ; but their living there opened a door of entrance and afforded facilities that I could not otherwise have had." He entered the medical department of the University of Pennsylvania, and graduated, 1817, locating for the practice of his profession in the neighborhood of his birthplace. He was married to Sarah Spencer, Fourth month 15, 18 19. He says: "We were poor, but we believed we could be happy, and by industry and economy we could build up the comforts of life around us, and enjoy them so much the more. Such was the conclusion reached, and my father became my bondsman for a lot of fourteen acres, with a small log-house." Ten years later he purchased and removed to a small farm in New Garden, near Toughkenamon, where he remained.

Dr. Michener was an ardent scientific student, especially in botany, an earnest and persistent advocate of total abstinence, and a voluminous writer. A memorandum preserved by him of his published productions, including newspaper articles, made a total of 497, of which 15 were books, and 23 medical reports, etc. He was in correspondence with many distinguished scientists, and he formed large collections in natural history, including specimens of birds, mammalia, reptiles, etc., a valuable herbarium, and a cabinet of salt-, fresh-water, and land shells. A valuable work is his " Retrospect of Early Quakerism," in which are given historical studies of the meetings of the Friends in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, with extracts from official records illustrating the internal history of the Society. In 1855 he built a new house, and planted around it many choice trees, living " to see many of them attain surprising proportions. Several years previous to his decease, one of these (a Paulownia Imperialis) was cut down, and the trunk sawed into boards, of which, at his request, his coffin was made."

To the memory of his wife, Sarah Spencer, Dr. Michener left a feeling tribute. " She inherited the meek and unpretending disposition of her father in an eminent degree. Mild and affable, yet unobtrusive in her manners, those only who best knew her were able to appreciate her worth. Having passed thirty years under the parental roof, in the faithful discharge of those affectionate duties which we all owe to our parents, she exchanged with becoming dignity the relations of the child for those of the wife — of the daughter for those of the mother - with a full consciousness of the high responsibilities which devolved upon her — and a prayerful concern to discharge them with fidelity — and she was mercifully favored to do so. A life so spent in the practical duties of the Christian prepared her for the solemn change that was approaching. When the cry was heard, 'behold the bridegroom cometh — go forth to meet him,' she bowed in submission to the summons saying, ' Not my will, but thine, be done.' After a short but severe illness, she, on the morning of the 2ist of First month, 1843, quietly departed this life, and on the 23d was interred in New Garden Friends' burying-ground, in the presence of a large company of sorrowing relatives and friends."

Dr. Michener married, second, Fifth month 9, 1844, (352(5) Mary S., daughter of WiUiam and Hannah Walton. • Mary was born Tenth month 27, 1797, and died Third month i, 1885. Her mother died in 18 19, and her father in 1836. She taught school, "mostly in the vicinity of Kennett Square," 1836 to 1840. " In the spring of 1840 she bought a house, located herself at London Grove, and soon after opened a small school for girls, mostly boarders." Her marriage occurred (as stated above) in 1844. An obituary memoir of her was prepared and printed by her husband, (Philadelphia, 1885). She was an active member of the Society of Friends, an overseer, elder, clerk of business meetings, etc.

8. ISAAC SHOEMAKER (MARTHA, ISAAC) was born December 01, 1775 in Upper Dublin twp., Philadelphia Co., PA, and died in Montgomery Co., PA. He married MARGARET HALLOWELL 1801, daughter of THOMAS HALLOWELL and MARGARET. She was born May 19, 1775 in Horsham twp., Montgomery Co., PA.

JQ- There may be some confusion about the Thomas Hallowell who is the father of Margaret Hallowell. He left the following will:

HALLOWELL, THOMAS. Moreland. April 27, 1820. November 24, 1821. Montgomery Co. will book 5.363
To wife Martha, house and household goods. To son Thomas, farm, containing 109 acres.
To John Jones, looking glass, etc. To son Ezra, silver can. To Isaac Shoemaker, dozen tea spoons. To son Thomas, and son-in-laws George Shoemaker, and John Thomson and Thomas Shoemaker, and Isaac Shoemaker, farming utensils, equally. Exrs. to pay to grandchildren, $4.00 each.
Execs: Son Thomas, and son-in-law George Shoemaker.
Wit: Grove Mitchell, Samuel Shoemaker.

Martha in the will is apparently Martha (Shoemaker) Simpson, Isaac Shoemaker's mother, who married Thomas Hallowell as a second wife in 1817 in Frankford. I do not believe that this is the Thomas Hallowell who married Margaret Tyson if the birthdate of September 30, 1724 is correct for this Margaret (this assignment appears on World Connect.)

Children of ISAAC SHOEMAKER and MARGARET HALLOWELL are:
i. THOMAS SHOEMAKER, b. August 11, 1804.

Salathiel Cleaver, son of Nathan and Ruth (Roberts) Cleaver, was born l0th mo., 1780, and was an active and industrious farmer of Montgomery township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. His wife, Mary (Shoemaker) Cleaver, daughter of Daniel Shoemaker, of Upper Dublin township, bore him the following named children: Lydia; Nathan, who married Deborah Conrad, and Sarah C. James, of Byberry, is their daughter; Josiah, who married, 4th mo. 11, 1844, Martha P. Lukens, daughter of Peter and Mary Lukens, and among their children are: Mary, Daniel (deceased), Jane, wife of William B. Richards, of Plymouth township, near Norristown, and Phebe, wife of Charles Keisel; Daniel; Silas, mentioned at length below; and John, mentioned at length in the following paragraph. Silas Cleaver was born 2d mo. 7, 1819. He was educated at the Joseph Foulke boarding school, and after completing his studies he entered the mill of William Ely, in Whitemarsh, and learned the trade.

The following eight years he operated the Walnut Mill, in Upper Dublin township, and then purchased the property on the Wissahickon, since known as Cleaver's Mill, and now operated by Chalkley K. Cleaver, son of John Cleaver. Silas Cleaver attended strictly to business, prospered in his undertaking, and had made all preparations to retire, and had bought a handsome house, when he died rather suddenly, 2d mo. 18, 1884. He was a man of the highest integrity and stood well in the community in which he lived. He was noted for gentleness, which is a characteristic of the Society of Friends, causing them to be greatly beloved, and as a business man and in every other relation of life he was all that a man should be, and his memory will long remain among the succeeding generations. He married, 3d mo., 9, 1848, Mary E. Rupert, daughter of John Rupert, who is still living and now resides in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

11. ELIZABETH SHOEMAKER (DANIEL, ISAAC) was born Abt. August 29, 1791 in Pennsylvania, and died August 01, 1873. She married JOSEPH FOULKE 1810, son of HUGH FOULKE and ANN ROBERTS. He was born May 22, 1786 in Gwynedd twp., Montgomery Co., PA, and died February 15, 1863.

Notes for JOSEPH FOULKE:
from "Fair Land Gwynedd" by Phil Johnson Ruth (1991):
Recollection of Gwynedd Schools in the Late 1700's from Quaker minister and educator Joseph Foulke (1786-1863):

"My earliest recollection of schools which I attended was at Gwynedd meeting. There wa no house for the purpose, but what was called 'the little meeting-house" was used. An old tottering man by the name of Samuel Evans was the teacher. The reading books were the Bible and Testament: we had Dilworth's Spelling Book and Dilworth's Assistant or Arithmetic. Grammar was a thing hardly thought of; there was, however, a small part of the spelling-book called 'A New Guide to the English Tongue', and a few of the older pupils learned portions of this by rote, and would occasionally recite to the master, but the substance appeared to be equally obscure both to master and scholar.

My next schooling was in 1795, in the house late the property of William Buzby, on the Bethlehem Road, above the Spring-House. It was a kind of family school, taught by Hannah Lukens. I next went to Joshua Foulke, my father's elder brother, and an old man. He taught in the log schoolhouse, near the eighteen-mile stone on the Bethlehem road. My father, with the help of his neighbors, built this house [about 1798], on a lot set apart for this purpose, at the southern extremity of his premises. This log school-house stood about thirty years, and besides Joshua Foulke, we had for teachers William Coggins, Hannah Foulke, Benjamin Albertson, Hugh Foulke (my brother), John Chamberlain, Christian Dull (Jr.), Daniel Price, and Samual Jones (I have probably not named all, or given them in the order in which they came).

The Free School of Montgomery, however, was more popular. The salary there, $160 a year, secured more competent teachers than other schools in the neighborhood. I can remember when the teacher's pay was from a dollar to ten shilings per quarter for each scholar, and he obtained his board by going about from house to house among his employers, and it was a remark that people would trust a teacher to instruct their children to whom they would not lend a horse!"

from Collections by Howard Jenkins:

Joseph Foulke
Amongst the community of the Friends, at Gwynedd, the most conspicuous figure, for many years, was Joseph Foulke. He was born there, May 22, 1786. In 1817, he appeared as a minister, and was admitted a member of the meeting of ministers and elders in 1821, after which he continued in the ministry to the end of his life, more than forty years. He made numerous visits to distant meetings, including those in New Jersey, New York, Canada, Maryland, Ohio, and Indiana. He had learned the trade of a wheelwright (which was also originally the trade of his father), and had expected to pursue it as an occupation, but his inclinations turned to teaching, and in 1811 he took charge of Friends' School at Plymouth, where he continued for six years; and then, after teaching one year at Upper Dublin, he established in the autumn of 1818, a boarding school for young men and boys, at Gwynedd, on part of his father's estate. This school he conducted for many years with marked success, and it was continued later, until about 1860, in the charge of his sons Daniel and Joseph, and his nephew, Hugh Foulke Jr. Joseph published (Philadelphia : 1844) a memoir of Jacob Ritter (a preacher among Friends, who had been a Revolutionary soldier: see in Watson's Annals details of his confinement in the British prison in Philadelphia). He also conducted for many years the publication of the "Friends' Almanac", furnishing for it the astronomical calculations. In 1836 he visited Washington as one of a committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting to influence Congress against the admission of Arkansas as a slave state. (See Curtis's Life of James Buchanon, Vol. I, p. 337; Vol II, p. 181.) His MS. Journal, giving many interesting details of his life, has been repeatedly drawn upon for this work

He married (1) ABIGAIL MANN May 17, 1821 in London Grove Mtg., Chester Co., PA, daughter of JOHN MANN and LYDIA BATTIN. She was born July 09, 1790, and died August 11, 1854. He married (2) PRISCILLA STUBBS March 02, 1859 in Little Britain Twp, Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania, Little Britain Mtg. She was born April 25, 1815, and died Abt. July 22, 1897 in Short Creek, Harrison Co, OH.

The following is from Byberry Waltons : an account of four English brothers, Nathaniel & Thomas & Daniel & William Walton, who settled about 1683 in Byberry Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania : with accounts of more than 4000 Waltons and many more by other surnames descended from these four brothers, by Norman Walton Swayne (Philadelphia, Pa.: Printed by Stephenson Bros., 1958) pp. 242-3.

JOSEPH S. WALTON, born 11.11.1792, or 12.5.1792, died 12. 7.1676, son of William Walton & Hannah Shoemaker of East Fallowfield Twp, Chester Co., Pa., married 1st 5.17.1821 under care of London Grove Mtg, Abigail Mann, born 7.9.1790, died 8.11.1854 of dysentery, daughter of John Mann & Lydia Battin of Chester Co., married 2nd 3.2.1859 at Drumore under care of Little Britain Mtg, Priscilla Stubbs Parry of Drumore, born 4.25.1815, died 7.22 or 23. 1897 at the home of Aaron Packer near Short Creek, Ohio in her 83rd year, daughter of John Stubbs & Ann Cutler and widow of Seneca Parry. This is from the obituary memoir of Mary S. Walton Michener by her husband Ezra Michener M. D. and Ms of grandson Joseph Solomon Walton. The former gives the 1st date for Joseph's death, the latter the 2nd. Friends Intelligencer and the proving of Priscilla's will say she died the 22nd, but Short Creek Mtg has it 23rd. London Grove Mtg says 4.4.1821 Joseph & Abigail declared intentions and 6.6.1821 were reported married, then 7.4.1821 Abigail to Fallowfield. Undated stones for Joseph S. & Abigail are at Fallowfield Mtg. Friends Intelligencer says Abigail died of dysentery, had been for the last year in poor health, at different times had worked with her husband among the Indians and several years was an elder of the meeting. The same paper and the Parry Gen. Ms say Priscilla, born as above, married at Lancaster 3.23.1842 Seneca Parry, who died 1848 leaving her with three small children, John Stubbs, who married but soon died of consumption, Letitia, who married Haviland Hull, and Mary Anna who married Aaron Packer of Ohio. Priscilla had moved to Drumore with Seneca. She had heart trouble for years and suffered intensely, but always was active in the meeting. After death of Joseph S. her daughter Mary Anna went to Ercildoun to stay with her mother, then after Mary Anna's marriage 3.16.1887 at the home of her mother under care of Fallowfield Mtg to Aaron Packer of ShortCreek Mtg in Ohio, Priscilla moved to Ohio with them. The will of Joseph S. of East Fallowfield Twp, drawn 12.1.1871, codicil Oct. 21, 1874, proved in Chester Co. Dec. 26, 1876 left wife Priscilla his share in the house and lot where they lived, adjoining the village of Ercildoun, $10 each to John H. Parry, Letitia P. Hull and Mary Anna Parry "for their kindness while we lived together." The codicil raised Mary Anne's bequest to $500. He named children George Walton, Lydia IN. Foulke and Margrett (sic) Walton, Ann Eliza wife of George Walton, grandchildren Deborah F. Walton, Joseph S. Walton, Abigal (sic) Foulke, Edwin Foulke and Joseph Foulke, exrs wife and son. The will of Priscilla S., late of Ercildoun, now temporarily domiciled in Ohio, left equal shares to daughters Letitia P. Hull of Maryland and Mary Anna Packer extrx of Ohio. Richard Darlington, in his description of the Great Tornado of July 1, 1877, says Priscilla Walton, on the south side of the road south of Fallowfield Mtg House, lost all of a young apple orchard, also some fences, damage $300. The above Ms says, judging by places of birth of the three children, the family lived on their homestead on Buck Run near Broomell's Mills in Fallowfield Twp, at Tunesassah Indian Reservation in NeivYork State and later in Highland Twp. After reaching manhood Joseph inserted the middle S to distinguish himself from Sheep Joe, 636 Joseph Walton, who lived in the same village. 697 Joseph S. was called Injun Joe from having been in charge of the Seneca Reservation. He and Jesse Kersey went together as Friends' ministers on several journeys. Westland Mtg says 8.25.1836 Joseph S. Walton was present on a religious visit and Gwynedd Mtg says 30th 7th mo 1868 Joseph S. Walton, an Elder, with minute from Fallowfield. The 1850 census has in East Fallowfield Twp, Joseph S. Walton age 57 Farmer real estate $3500, with Abigail age 59, Lydia age 23 born N. Y., Margaretta age 20 born Pa. That of 1870 has in same Joseph Walton age77 Farmer, with Priscilla S. age 55 Keeping House and also Mary Ann Parry age 24 Domestic Serv. That of 1880 has in same Priscilla S. Waltonage 65 Retired. The three children:
George b 1823 d 1893 m 1847 Ann Eliza Pusey b 1825 d 1897

Joseph S and Priscilla are found in the 1870 census (WALTON JOSEPH S 77 M W PA PA CHESTER E FALLOWFIELD TWP 1870; Series: M593 Roll: 1323 Page: 107).

:
John Cleaver, son of Salathiel and Mary (Shoemaker) Cleaver, was born November 1,1822, on the homestead in Montgomery township, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. He remained on the farm with his parents until he was nineteen years of age, and his education was acquired in a private school on his father's property, and later at the boarding school of Joseph Foulke, in Gwynedd. He decided to learn the trade of a miller, and, accordingly, he entered a mill on the Pennypack, near Bustleton, in Philadelphia county, as an apprentice. Having finished his apprenticeship two years and a half later, he went to Byberry, in the upper end of Philadelphia county, where he remained one year, at the expiration of which time he formed a partnership with William Buckman, long since deceased, this business relation continuing two years. In the spring of 1848 an opportunity presented itself for engaging in business with his brother, Silas Cleaver, who owned a mill on the Wissahickon, in Whitemarsh township. This business relation was of the most satisfactory character and continued until the year 1884, when the partnership was dissolved by the death of Silas Cleaver. William J.and Chalkley K. Cleaver, sons of John Cleaver, having been admitted into the firm the previous year, they continued the business until the death of William J., which occurred August 31, 1888. The business was then conducted by John Cleaver and his son Chalkley K., John acting as salesman and collector in Norristown and elsewhere, and since the death of

Notes for MATTHIAS SHOEMAKER from Bean's History of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania:

In 1777 Mathias Shoemaker, the elder, purchased the farm in Whitpain township, which afterwards became the property of his only son, Thomas, and is now owned and occupied by Charles K., son of Thomas and brother of Mathias Shoemaker, the subject of this memoir.

Mathias Shoemaker, one of the seven sons of Thomas and Jane (Supplee) Shoemaker, was born on the homestead farm of his father in Whitpain, February 17, 1810. Through the years of his youth his life was passed like that of other farmers' sons of his time, doing the boy's work on the farm and studying in the common schools during the short winter terms. His education was obtained in the "Cross Roads School-house" in Whitpain, and at the "Supplee School-house" on the Swedes' Ford road, in Norriton township. In the fall of 1826, when he was a little more than sixteen years of age, he was apprenticed to Samuel Cowden to learn the blacksmith's trade. Cowden's shop was at the "Broad Axe Tavern," on the township line of Whitpain and Whitemarsh. He served four years in his apprenticeship, which closed in the fall of 1830, a few months before he was twenty-one years of age. During those few months he again attended the "Cross Roads School" (then taught by Benjamin Conrad) until the spring of 1831, when he went to Philadelphia, and engaged as a journeyman in the shop of Franklin W. Coggins, on Queen Street above Second, where he remained more than three years. In the fall of 1834 he went to Chestnut Hill, where he worked in the employ of Andrew Fisher. In 1835 he returned to the family homestead in Whitpain, where he commenced business for himself, and worked about four years in a shop which his father built for his use. At that place he commenced the business of making elliptic springs for wagons and other vehicles. The first pair of springs which he made were for John Slingluff, of Whitpain, and they were also the first springs of that kind ever manufactured or used in Montgomery County.

In 1839 (being then married) Mr. Shoemaker removed to the vicinity of the "Cross Roads Schoolhouse", where he had purchased a house and about eight acres of land, on which he built a shop. Afterwards he added twenty-four acres by purchase from the estate of Christopher Mathias. At that place he remained engaged in the work of his trade and in farming for more than ten years. In 1850 he moved to Philadelphia, and there worked at journey work for about eight months, after which time, for about one year, he carried on business in a shop which bad been built for him by John Conrad. He then bought a Shop of Samuel Wooley, on Hutchinson Street above Master, where he recommenced the business of spring-making, living in a house which he had bought, located on Master Street. At his commencement of business on Hutchinson Street be employed three hands, but as his business grew he increased the number, so that at one time during the war of the Rebellion he employed twenty-five hands. After the war he put in machinery driven by steam-power, which enabled him to reduce his force of hands. He continued to manufacture springs at his shops on Hutchinson Street for about nineteen years. In 1870 he moved from this city to Abington township, Montgomery County, but still continued to carry on the business in Philadelphia until 1871, when he sold it out to a company. From Abington he removed to Cheltenham township, where he purchased a residence and lot of ground, and lived there till 1874, when he removed to his present residence in Mount Vernon Street, Philadelphia.

Mr. Shoemaker was married, February 23, 1837, to Sarah M. Fisher, daughter of Andrew Fisher, of Chestnut Hill. She died October 14, 1883. Their only surviving child, an unmarried daughter, lives with her father in Philadelphia. Mr. Shoemaker is a Republican, but has never held or sought public office. In his youth he, with his father and other members of his family, affiliated with the Friends, but he was never a member of the Society until 1865, when be joined the Green Street Meeting. He is now a member of the Meeting at Fifteenth and Race Streets, Philadelphia.
