Holland—Margine (Mardi) Copeland McVey Holland, peacefully on Sept. 17, 2020. Mardi was born to H.B. and Margine McVey on June 6, 1923, on a farm near Hillsboro, Ohio. Her family moved to Philadelphia, Pa. Mardi graduated from Abington Friends School in Jenkintown, Pa., and Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. While at Oberlin, she met F.D. (Bud) Holland, Jr. They were married July 14, 1945, at the Abington Friends meetinghouse in Jenkintown, Pa. Mardi was a member of Abington Meeting until the time of her death.
Mardi and Bud lived in Lawrence, Kans., Columbia, Mo., and Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1954 they moved to Grand Forks, N.D., where Bud taught geology at University of North Dakota (UND). In Grand Forks, Mardi worked for the First Presbyterian Church, Wesley College, and as secretary for the biology and home economics departments at UND. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, served as board member and president of Home Delivered Meals at Altru Hospital, was a member of the Mayor’s Committee for Community Development, and was national contact person for the Grand Forks Worship Group.
In the fall of 2018, Mardi and Bud moved to Iowa City, Iowa, to be closer to their son Del and their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Throughout her life, Mardi embodied the Quaker notion that everyone can “brighten your own little corner.”
Mardi is survived by her husband, F.D. (Bud) Holland, Jr.; sons Del Holland (Barb Bailey) and Erik Holland (Susan); four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
