MavronikolasRuth Thorp Harvey Mavronikolas, 91, on April 8, 2023, following a period of declining health at Friends Homes West retirement community in Greensboro, N.C. Ruth was born on July 3, 1931, the second child of Cyril Hingston Harvey Sr. and Ruth Sharpless Thorp Harvey, in Philadelphia, Pa. She grew up in a row house that belonged to her maternal grandmother in Media, Pa. Siblings were an older sister, Dorothy Alice Harvey Leonard; a younger brother, Cyril Hingston Harvey II; and a younger sister, Mary Jane Harvey. The siblings, especially Ruth and Cyril who were just two years apart in age, enjoyed growing up in the home, which was connected to their cousins’ home.

Ruth was a tenth generation Quaker. She grew up as a member of Third Street Meeting (Media Meeting). Ruth and her siblings attended Friends schools primarily in the Philadelphia area, as their parents were lifelong Quaker educators. She spent her high school years as a boarding student at Westtown School in West Chester, Pa., graduating in 1949.

Ruth continued her education at the University of Chicago, followed by the Philadelphia College of Art, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1956. She would later receive a master’s degree in education at the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a certificate of advanced study in educational leadership, also at UPenn in 1987. Ruth was the recipient of several Quaker grants for post-secondary education: The Mary Jeanes and the Anne Townsend Funds in 1952–53 and the T. Wistar Brown Fund in 1952–64, all under the auspices of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.

Ruth and Christopher George “Chris” Mavronikolas, a first-generation Greek American and World War II veteran, married on November 27, 1958, at Third Street Meeting. They met while both were attending the same art school. Ruth and Chris had two children, Elia Ruth and George Christopher.

Ruth began her career as the registrar at the Philadelphia College of Art in 1956–57. From 1957 to 1966, she taught at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Ruth chaired the school’s art department from 1960 to 1966. In 1966, she returned to the Philadelphia College of Art, where she served as associate professor of art education from 1966 to 1974. From there she went to teach at Moorestown Friends School in New Jersey from 1974 to 1976. Teaching positions in a succession of other Philadelphia schools followed, including Franklin Learning Center from 1976 to 1982, Ludlow Elementary School from 1986 to 1989, and Bregy Elementary School from 1989 until her retirement in 1993. Ruth was listed as a noteworthy art educator by Marquis Who’s Who.

Ruth earned a real estate license and was a sales associate at Colonial Realty Company from 1982 to 1987. She had a beautiful soprano voice and enjoyed painting throughout her life.

As both Elia and George were graduates of Guilford College and chose to remain in Greensboro, Chris and Ruth moved to Greensboro in 2008 to be near them and Elia’s sons and Ruth’s brother, Cyril. As Ruth had grown up in an unprogrammed meeting, she first attended Friendship Meeting in Greensboro. In 2009, she decided to become a member at New Garden Meeting, where Elia was a member.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Chris Mavronikolas, in 2020.

She is survived by two children, Elia Ruth Mavronikolas (Neil Edwards “Chuck” Thompson) and George Christopher Mavronikolas; two grandchildren; and one brother, Cyril Hingston Harvey II.
