Hindmarsh—Thera F. Hindmarsh, 96, on October 17, 2025, in White River Junction, Vt. Thera was born on February 11, 1929, to Henry Cope Foster and Thyra Jane (Meyers) Foster in Warwick, R.I. Thera was raised in a traditional Quaker household. In 1947, she graduated from Westtown School in West Chester, Pa. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bouvé-Boston School of Physical Education, at that time an independent affiliate of Tufts University, which prepared her for a lifelong career as a physical therapist.
Thera married Robert Gray Hindmarsh on July 7, 1951, whom she had met on her family farm when he worked there in conjunction with earning his college degree in agriculture from Cornell University. They began a partnership grounded in shared ideals and deep commitment to education and service. In 1957, together with several other families, they cofounded The Meeting School, a Quaker boarding school in Rindge, N.H. Thera played an essential role in shaping residential life for students, nurturing a sense of home, responsibility, and care.
In 1965, Thera and Bob moved to Concord, Mass., where she resumed her physical therapy career at Emerson Hospital once her children reached school age. She and Bob were active in Acton (Mass.) Meeting.
Around 1980, Thera and Bob relocated to Wallingford, Pa., where Thera performed home care physical therapy. Thera and Bob retired to Putney, Vt., in 1989, where they were active in Putney Meeting. Thera was also active in the wider community, including the library, a garden club, and AARP—all of which reflected her belief in collective responsibility and community.
Bob died in 2012. In 2016, Thera moved to Valley Terrace assisted living community in White River Junction, where she was involved in many activities as long as she was able.
Thera was predeceased by her husband, Robert Gray Hindmarsh; her parents, Henry Cope Foster and Thyra Jane (Meyers) Foster; and two brothers, John and Harold.
She is survived by four children, Beth, Walter, Alison, and Tom; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
