Maury—Marcia (Marcy) Maury, 70, on January 6, 2023, after suffering a cerebral aneurysm, in Greensboro, N.C. Marcy was born on December 10, 1952, to Lucien Garnett Maury and Wilma Jean Maury in Wilmington, Del.
Marcy attended Elkton High School in Elkton, Md., moving to Greensboro, N.C., to attend Guilford College. She earned her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Marcy met her husband, John Paul Roy, nearly 50 years ago in Greensboro, and they lived there ever since.
Marcy held administrative positions at Burlington Mental Health Center, Baptist Hospital Medical School, and the Guilford County Partnership for Children. Throughout her life, Marcy served Greensboro’s deaf community as an interpreter for the deaf.
Marcy was a longtime active member of New Garden Meeting in Greensboro. She taught First-day school for more than 25 years and served on many committees. At meeting, Marcy was often seen greeting others, working, or helping. She was active with the Guilford College Alumni Association, including serving on its board of directors. She was awarded the prestigious Charles C. Hendricks ’40 Distinguished Service Award.
Marcy was a sparkling, uplifting force. She traveled extensively and loved to participate in bridge tournaments, earning sufficient points to become a Life Master. She was an accomplished artist, sculptor, and potter. Most important to Marcy were her family, Quaker faith, art, recreational and competitive bridge, travel, Guilford College arts and alumni, assistance to Somalis and other refugee groups, and serving Greensboro’s deaf community.
Marcy was a devoted grandmother to her grandchildren, with whom she was always ready to play games, read, or host overnight. She was a constant and active presence at New Garden Meeting, always smiling and helping.
Many friends spoke of her helping to create the mosaic prominently positioned on the wall at the entrance of the meetingroom, and of the pottery figures she helped the meeting’s children make for the crèche. Marcy was a living embodiment of Quaker love, tolerance, and light.
Marcy was predeceased by her parents, Lucien Garnett Maury and Wilma Jean Maury.
She is survived by her husband, John Paul Roy; two children, Evan Roy and Brian Roy (Katie); four grandchildren; and two sisters, Deborah Maury (Michael Curtis) and Wendy Maury (Michael Bergman).
