Moore—Douglas Christopher Moore, 70, on June 26, 2023, under the care of hospice, in Stanley, N.C. Doug was born on June 4, 1953, to J. Floyd Moore and Lucretia Josephine Phillips Moore in Greensboro, N.C. He grew up with older siblings, Abigail Moore Sebastian and Randolph Thomas Moore. Doug had been a lifelong member of New Garden Meeting in Greensboro, but prior to his death he moved to Stanley.
Doug’s father was a longtime faculty member at Guilford College in Greensboro. The Moore children grew up on campus and at New Garden Meeting, except for a period of three years while their father was completing his doctorate in Lynn, Mass.
Doug attended Newtown School in Waterford, Ireland, and Sandy Spring Friends School in Maryland. He was a member of Guilford College’s class of 1978.
Doug’s life work was in the field of fundraising for nonprofits, including the John F. Rich Company in Philadelphia, Pa.; Newtown School; Friends Select School in Philadelphia; Guilford College; Capital Consortium in Raleigh, N.C.; and Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Durham, N.C., and Washington, D.C. In addition, he consulted for Triad Therapy Services in Greensboro.
In 1991, after his health deteriorated, Doug lived at his family’s farm “Pixie Vale” for several years and then moved to an apartment near Guilford College. During his time at the farm, he undertook restoring a 90-year-old log cabin and maintaining the 41-acre mountain farm. He married Barbara “Twinkle” Kinsey, also a Guilford College graduate, on February 28, 2007. They wed at Friends Homes at Guilford retirement community.
Doug was always interested in promoting his alma mater. He was responsible for restoring the campus bell, which had been in disrepair for 14 years. Just as he maintained an interest in the college, Doug kept up with what was happening at New Garden Meeting. He had been very active with the meeting during his childhood and was involved with Friends meetings wherever he lived. He was unable to be as physically active as he would have liked due to rheumatoid arthritis.
Doug was predeceased by a brother, Randolph Thomas Moore, in 1984.
Doug is survived by his wife, Barbara “Twinkle” Kinsey Moore; Twinkle’s sons, John Charles Gorrod and William Heyward Gorrod, and their families; one sister, Abigail Moore Sebastian (Bobby); and two nieces and one nephew.
Correction: A previous version of this milestone listed Abigail Moore Sebastian as a surviving daughter of Doug Moore. Abigail is a surviving sister of Doug, not his daughter, and her three children are Doug’s surviving nieces and nephew, not his grandchildren. Additionally, Doug was predeceased by his brother, Randolph Thomas Moore.
