Young Friends Bookshelf
We have some terrific books to share this month. There are two books related to World War II. The World Entire tells us about a hero who saved many lives during the war. The Friendship Train is about an effort to feed Europeans after the war. They are similar in that they are both stories about heroes and are based on true stories. I am embarrassed to admit I had never heard of the Friendship Train. It was before I was born but in a period that my instructors never discussed. If they got through the Second World War, they believed they had successfully gotten to the present (even though we were born in the baby boom after that war). In college, Vietnam received more time and attention than Korea.
There are also books on topics such as gardening, going to meeting for worship, mindfulness, wisdom and King Solomon, homelessness, gun violence, and the power of literacy during Jim Crow. All of these should provoke thought and maybe action. There are books to be read before bed or just for enjoyment. We even have some wonderful books for upper elementary readers. I believe all of them have value, and I hope you will agree.
