Rowland Ellis was an overseer, elder or minister on the following marriages: (1) Hugh Roberts, of Gwynedd married Ann Thomas, of Upper Merion, at Merion meeting house, 7th mo. 30, 1703. (Haverford, now Radnor, MM records); (2) John Jones s/o Rees dec'd of Merion married Jane Edward daughter of Edward Griffith dec'd of Llan y Chill Co. Rowland Ellis was one of the early ministers at Plymouth Meeting. He has a short biography HERE (near bottom). A long genealogical treatise edited by Thomas Allen Glenn in the "Reifsnyder Gillam Ancestry" is on-line HERE. He was the son of Ellis Price and Ann Humphrey of Bryn Mawr, Merionethshire, Wales. His mother was the sister of the Quaker minister John Humphrey who left a narrative (who remembers R. Ellis and his daughter Jane in his will.) Before coming to Plymouth, he was Rowland Ellis Sr. of Bryn Mawr (now called Harriton House) in the Merion settlement, situated near where the College of that name is today. Rowland Ellis served as a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly and as an overseer of the Quaker schools in Philadelphia. Other references to Rowland Ellis: He witnessed the will of Richard Humphrey of Radnor, 1692 and many others thereafter, and was trustee of the will of Robert Owen, 1697 (if you search through USGenWeb you will see what I mean). He was made, with others, the guardian of the children Ellis Ellis of Haverford in 1705. Howard Jenkins: "There was, it seems, some "difference" between Rowland Ellis and Owen Owen. This is mentioned in the minutes several times, and the case probably never came to a definite conclusion. But at one meeting, in the 9th month, 1724, a committee was appointed to "advise 'em to stand to the judgment of the Friends," and the papers relating to the controversy were directed to be placed in the custody of John Humphrey, who was not to allow them "to be shown or read to any one, or to be transcribed." Two months later the papers were brought to the meeting, "folded, sealed, and delivered to John Humphrey, to be safely kept by him, and not unsealed without this meeting consent." The whole affair then rested. Afterward, Rowland Ellis died, and in 1741, John Humphrey being dead also, the meeting ordered the papers to be destroyed." Rowland Ellis was the main character in two novels written by Marion Eames, a Welsh writer who lived in Dolgellau. These books are a semi-fictional account of the events leading up to the emigration to America under the title Y Stafell Ddirgel, since translated into English as "The Secret Room" and a follow up book set in Pennsylvania called "Fair Wilderness". Rowland Ellis translated Ellis Pugh's "Salutations to the Britons" from Welsh into English. See also, Thomas Allen Glenn, Merion in the Welsh Tract, pps. 205-234 for the biography and genealogy of Rowland Ellis. According to Glenn he became unwell at the 6 mo., 1731 Monthly Meeting held at Gwynedd, was taken to John Evans' house where he died early 7th mo. and was buried at Plymouth Meeting.]
